SOFLO’s Maddie Smutny Wins On Final Day Of Southern Zone Age Group Championships; Florida Gold Coast All-Stars Finish Eighth

CARY, N.C., August 3, 2019—Maddie Smutny of South Florida Aquatic Club saved her best for last on the final day of the Southern Zone Age Group Championships Saturday at Triangle Aquatic Center.

The Florida Gold Coast All-Star, seeded second in the 13-14 200-meter butterfly in 2:24.81 after morning prelims, won the event in a lifetime-best 2:20.44 with a time drop of 2.06. Her previous best was 2:22.50. Her splits were 1:09.14 and 1:11.30 coming home.

It was the 14-year-old’s first victory of the meet. Smutny finished with 12 points.

SOFLO teammate Alejandro Mateus, 14, finished the meet with a fourth place in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:16.57 with a time drop of 1.70. He was also 20th in the 200-meter individual medley with an 0.14 time drop. Mateus finished with five points.

Early leader North Carolina clinched team titles in combined (944.5), men’s (456.5) and women’s (488) for the sweep. Florida Swimming was runner-up in combined with 791 points and Team Georgia was third with 745.

Florida Gold Coast Zone Team All-Stars was eighth out of 13 teams with 229 points, ninth among men’s teams with 120.5 and eighth among women’s teams with 108.5.

Florida Gold Coast All-Star Hudson Bishop Wins On Day Four Of Southern Zone Age Group Championships

CARY, N.C., August 2, 2019—Maddie Smutny of South Florida Aquatic Club turned in another Top 15 finish on Day Four of the Southern Zone Age Group Championships Friday at Triangle Aquatic Center.

Smutny, 14, was eleventh in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:39.90. She was also a member of FGC’s tenth place 13-14 200-meter medley relay team in 2:07.03 with teammates Meghan Perez, Michelle Fernandez and Logan Zielinski.

SOFLO teammate Alejandro Mateus, 14, was 18th in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:05.86.

Florida Gold Coast had its first individual winner. Hudson Bishop, 14, of East Coast Aquatic Club won the 13-14 100-meter backstroke in 1:00.38, a best time with a 0.75 time drop.

FGC teammate Dylan Smiley of Miami Country Day Aquatics was second in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:10.16.

Bishop, Smiley, Agustin Rodriguez and Daniel Givskov were members of the fourth place 200-meter medley relay that finished fourth in 1:53.80.

CARY, N.C., August 2, 2019—Maddie Smutny came up big for the Florida Gold Coast All-Stars Thursday at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships at Triangle Aquatic Center.

The 14-year-old South Florida Aquatic Club Shark was sixth in the 400-meter indivudual medley in a best time 5:15.07 with a time drop of 2.79 seconds.

Alejandro Mateus, 14, was 14th in the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:59.41 with a 2.89 time drop. He was also 21st in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:23.62, another best time with a 0.58 time drop.

Smutny, 14, finished 16th in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:12.86, 12th in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:06.78 and was a member of the Florida Gold Coast’s seventh-place 400-meter medley relay in 4:35.41 with teammates Nicol Bellardi, Michelle Fenandez and Mariana Cote.

SOFLO’s Smutny, Florida Gold Coast Opens Action In Southern Zone Age Group Championships

CARY, N.C., July 30, 2019—The Florida Gold Coast All-Stars opened racing on Tuesday at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships Tuesday at Triangle Aquatic Center.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Maddie Smutny, 14, came up with a nice time drop in the 800-meter freestyle. She was 14th in a lifetime-best 9:35.23, shaving 9.91 off her previous best of 9:45.14.

Florida Gold Coast’s best finish was third place in the 11-12 mixed 200-meter medley relay in 2:05.71 with Carolyn Levy Powell, Giulian Martin, Sidney Anton and Lucas Bailey.

North Carolina Swimming took the early lead in the combined, boys and girls team standings.

The meet continues Wednesday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.

Florida Gold Coast Swimmers Flex Muscles At Southern Zones, Futures; Donahue Fifth At U.S. Open

Joshua Zuchowski of FAST won an individual event and anchored Florida Gold Coast’s fourth-place relay at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships Thursday at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C.

Zuchowski, 12, won the 11-12 50-meter backstroke in 30.24.

The FGC 11-12 400-meter freestyle relay of Matthew Tarafa, Nicolas Gallego, SOFLO’s Sebastian Lares and Zuchowski was fourth in 4:04.42.

Lares was also 29th in the 50-meter backstroke in 33.74.

SOFLO teammate Leonardo Mateus was 15th in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:58.94 and 22nd in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:21.13.

SOFLO’s Paige Lane was 24th in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:02.33 and was a member of the FGC’s seventh place 400-meter freestyle relay.

The zone championships feature top regional swimmers at the senior and age group levels who qualify for these meets within the four designated zones (Eastern, Central, Southern and Western.)

FUTURES CHAMPIONSHIPS

South Florida Aquatic Club’s women’s contingent is sixth after the opening day of the USA Swimming Futures Championships at Georgia Tech’s McCauley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

The action opened with the women’s 800, men’s 1500 and 800-meter freestyle relays.

SOFLO’s women’s relay of Kathleen Golding, Emiliana Pelaez, Kelley Heron and Melissa Marinheiro finished sixth in 8:33.31. Marinheiro was also 20th in the 800 in 9:12.61.

Metro Aquatics and Swim Fort Lauderdale finished one-two in the men’s 800 freestyle relay.

U.S. OPEN

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Claire Donahue, 27, finished fifth in the 100-meter butterfly Thursday night at the U.S. Open in Minneapolis. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist, seeded fifth, finished in 59.18, off her seed time of 58.08. Sarah Gibson of San Antonio won the butterfly event in 58.39. It is the only event Donahue is entered in. Bethany Galat of Mishawaka, Ind. won her second event of the week in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:38.66 to add to her 200 breaststroke title. The U.S. Open continues through Saturday.

Florida Gold Coast Wins Relay Silver; Paige Lane Top SOFLO Finisher On Day Two Of Southern Zones

Florida Gold Coast had a good showing in the boys’ 400-meter medley relay at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships Wednesday at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C.

The boys’ 11-12 relay of Joshua Zuchowski, Victor Valdes, Matthew Tarafa and Nicolas Gallego finished second in 4:27.49.

Paige Lane was South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finisher, placing 15th in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:07.67.

SOFLO teammate Sebastian Lares was 25th in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:11.09.

The zone championships feature top regional swimmers at the senior and age group levels who qualify for these meets within the four designated zones (Eastern, Central, Southern and Western.)

U.S. OPEN

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Marc Rojas just missed making “C” final Wednesday at the U.S. Open Wednesday in Minneapolis.

Rojas, 22, was 25th in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:24.09, missing the final by one spot. His splits were 31.53, 35.85, 37.22 and 39.49. His reaction off the block was 0.73.

Three meet records were broken on the second day of competition. National team member Andrew Wilson broke the 200-meter breaststroke record in 2:09.73. Zane Grothe broke the record in the 400-meter freestyle in 3:45.63. Australia men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay set a new meet record in 3:16.87.

SOFLO teammate and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Claire Donahue, 27, competes Thursday in the 100-meter butterfly.

The U.S. Open continues through Saturday.

SOFLO’s Lares, Mateus Compete Opening Day Of Southern Zones

SOFLO’s Sebastian Lares and Leonardo Mateus, representing Florida Gold Coast, competed on Day One of the five-day Southern Zone Age Group Championships at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C.

Mateus, 14, was 16th in the 1500-meter freestyle in 17:44.57. Mateus has five events remaining: 200-meter backstroke, 400-meter individual medley, 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley and 200-meter butterfly.

Lares, 12, finished 24th in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:56.19. He has five events remaining: 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter individual medley.

Paige Lane, 13, will begin competing on Wednesday. Her first event is the 200-meter freestyle. She is also entered in the 100-meter butterfly, 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter butterfly.

The zone championships feature top regional swimmers at the senior and age group levels who qualify for these meets within the four designated zones (Eastern, Central, Southern and Western.)

July 29, 2014–Rafael Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club and Andrea Santander of Gulliver Swim Club gave the Florida Gold Coast All-Star team its first victories Tuesday on the opening day of USA Swimming Southern Zone Age Group Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Rodriguez, 12, won the 11-12 400-meter freestyle in a lifetime-best 4:18.36. He bettered his previous best time (4:24.64) by more than six seconds. Last year Rodriguez was ninth in the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:34.28.

Arik Katz, 12, of Florida Swimming was second in 4:20.72, also a best time, lowering his previous best of 4:26.29.

SOFLO’s Leonardo Mateus, 12, was sixth in a best time 4:33.43, dropping from 4:36.65.

Santander, 12, won the girls 11-12 400-meter freestyle in a lifetime-best 4:30.18. Her previous best was 4:34.49. Emma Weyant, 12, of Florida Swimming was fourth in 4:38.44.

It was a good day for the state of Florida.

In the girls 800-meter freestyle, Christina Cianciolo, 13, won the 13-14 800-meter freestyle in a best time 9:13.95, dropping 0.63 seconds. Ryley Ober, 13, also of Florida Swimming was fourth in a best time 9:23.28, with a huge time drop of 22.91.

Alex Webster, 14, of Florida Swimming was second in the 13-14 800-meter freestyle in 16:42.62. Webster was one of three swimmers in the top five. Brett Riley, 14, was fourth in a best time 16:50.39, dropping 9.01 seconds and Matthew Nutter, 14, was fifth in 16:54.21, also a best time dropping from 19.57 seconds.

Alexander Arrieta, 16, of Florida Gold Coast was third in a best time 16:34.88, dropping 5.68.

The Zone Championships feature top regional swimmers at the age group level. The meet continues through Saturday with prelims and finals.
