South Florida Aquatic Club Finishes Fifth At Southern Zone South Sectional Championships; Next Up, Area 3 Championships At SOFLO

GAINESVILLE, July 9, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club finished fifth among combined teams to wrap up the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Monday at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool in Gainesville.

SOFLO finished fifth with 1,050 points behind Gator Swim Club, Bolles, East Coast Aquatic Club and Swim Florida among a field of 82 teams.

SOFLO men finished fourth and women’s team was fifth. Last year SOFLO was sixth in combined among a field of 60 teams; the women were sixth and men finished seventh in the Orlando sectional meet.

Host Gator Swim Club dominated the meet from start-to-finish and swept the combined, men’s and women’ team totals.

Among SOFLO’s Top 10 finishers on the fourth and final day were:

Kathleen Golding, 17, 100-meter freestyle, fifth, 57.90; 200-meter butterfly, tenth, 2:22.63, 139 points.

Molly Golding, 15, 200-meter breaststroke, fifth, 2:41.91, time drop 1.09, 65 points.

Kelley Heron, 18, 200-meter backstroke, ninth, 2:22.46, 47 points.

Marc Rojas, 24, 200-meter breaststroke, eighth, 2:31.65, 53 points.

Lance Lesage, 15, 200-meter backstroke, tenth, 2:11.71, time drop, 2.92, 59 points.

Rafael Rodriguez, 16, 200-meter butterfly, tenth, 2:09.46, 38 points.

Samuel Quintero, 17, 200-meter breaststroke, tenth, 2:29.94, 17 points.

SOFLO’s women’s A 400-meter freestyle relay was fourth in 4:03.43 with Paige Lane, Kathleen Golding, Kelley Heron and Jessica Rodriguez.

SOFLO’s men’s A 400-meter freestyle relay was seventh in 3:42.58 with Robert Wilson, Rafael Rodriguez, CJ Kopecki, Juan Serna).

In addition to SOFLO, other top teams that competed among a field of 82 attached and unattached teams were host Gator Swim Club, Azura, Bolles, Sarasota YMCA Sharks, AquaKids Sharks, Gulliver Swim Club, Club Seminole, Westminster Academy, Trinity Prep, Metro Aquatics, Swim Florida, Highlander and Hurricane Aquatics.

The Speedo Sectionals Series display some of the top swimming talent across the U.S. The series has several stops in various zones.

The next meet of the championship season is the July 13-15 Area 3 Developmental Championships hosted by SOFLO at Academic Village Pool with prelims and finals at 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Kathleen Golding Top SOFLO Finisher On Day Three Of Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

GAINESVILLE, July 8, 2018—Kathleen Golding was South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finisher on Day Three of the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Sunday at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool in Gainesville.

Golding, 17, was second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:18.34 behind future Cal Bear Isabel Ivey in 2:17.47. It is her highest finish of the meet. She was also 11th in the 50-meter freestyle in 27.05. Golding has 97 points.

The only other SOFLO girl swimmer to finish in the Top 10 was Jessica Rodriguez, 19, sixth in the 50-meter breaststroke in 35.19. She has 46 points.

SOFLO’s top boys’ finisher Lance Lesage, 15, was eighth in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:02.09 with a time drop of 0.59. He has 42 points.

SOFLO’s women’s 400-meter medley relay was fifth in 4:31.64 with Kelley Heron, Jessica Rodriguez, Kathleen Golding and Paige Lane.

In the most exciting race of the evening between Florida Gold Coast swimmers, Davion Conley, 21, of Westminster Academy outsprinted Azura’s 21-year-old Marco Guarente, 28.63-28.67.

After three days, SOFLO is fifth in combined with 881 points. Host Gator Swim Club has already clinched the combined team title with 2,456 points. East Coast Aquatic Club is the highest Florida Gold Coast team, third with 1,007 points.

SOFLO is fourth among men’s teams with 413 points and fifth among women’s teams with 390. Gator Swim Club leads both categories with more than 1,000 points.

In addition to SOFLO, other top teams entered are host Gator Swim Club, Bolles, Sarasota YMCA Sharks, AquaKids Sharks, Gulliver Swim Club, Club Seminole, Westminster Academy, Trinity Prep, Metro Aquatics, Swim Florida, Highlander and Hurricane Aquatics.

SOFLO Third After Day Two Of Southern Zone South Sectional Championships In Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, July 7, 2018—After a slow start on opening day, South Florida Aquatic Club moved into third place overall on Day Two of the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Saturday at the University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool in Gainesville.

SOFLO has 615 points behind host Gator Swim Club with 1,446 and Bolles with 804. Gator Swim Club leads the men’s and women’s team totals. SOFLO is fourth among men’s teams with 285 and SOFLO women are fifth with 252.

SOFLO’s top finishers were sisters Molly and Kathleen Golding.

Molly Golding, 15, was third in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:15.12, with a time drop of 0.31. Golding also had a 5.32-second time drop in the 400-meter individual medley in 5:15.03. Golding has 38 points.

Kathleen Golding, 17, was third in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:54.54 and fourth in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:02.96. She has 53 points.

SOFLO’s top men’s finisher was Lance Lesage, 15, placing ninth in the 50-meter backstroke in a best time 28.55, dropping 0.25.

Miguel Cancel of AquaKids Sharks qualified first in the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:28.39, six seconds faster than he swam in all of 2017 after going 4:26 at the 2016 Olympic Trials. He finished third in the event in 4:30.92.

World champion Caeleb Dressel, 21, representing Bolles, made his meet debut in the 200-meter freestyle qualifying first in prelims in 1:52.26 and finished sixth in 1:53.42. Khader Baqlah, 19, of Gator Swim Club won the event in 1:48.18.

Olympian Ryan Lochte of Daytona Beach Swim Club scratched from his three events: 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley.

Westminster Academy Wins Two Relays, SOFLO Boys Third On Day One Of Southern Zone South Sectional Championships In Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, July 7, 2018—Westminster Academy Swim Club swept the 200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle relays against a strong field on Day One of the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Friday at the University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool in Gainesville.

The foursome of Anthony Barbar, David Lambert, Austin Saunders and Robinson Molina won both the 200-meter medley relay in 1:43.17 and 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:35.70.

SOFLO’s highest women’s finisher was its seventh-place 200-meter medley relay of Paige Lane, Kelley Heron, Kathleen Golding and Jessica Rodriguez in 2:03.22.

SOFLO’s B relay of Lance Lesage, CJ Kopecki, Juan Pineda and Rafael Rodriguez finished eighth in 1:51.96 ahead of the A relay of Robert Wilson, Juan Serna, Marc Rojas and Ricardo Roche in 1:52.33.

South Florida Aquatic Club boys are third with 90 points. Metro Aquatics lead with 129. Sarasota YMCA Sharks lead the combined with 183 and women’s team standings with 62.

SOFLO Competes This Weekend In Southern Zone South Sectional Championships In Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, July 2, 2018—The championship season begins Friday for South Florida Aquatic Club.

After months of training and competing in local meets, swimmers have a jam-packed schedule of top meets over the next seven weeks.

First up is the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships that begin Friday at the University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool in Gainesville.

After this week’s four-day meet there is the July 13-15 Area 3 Developmental Championships; July 19-22 FGC Junior Olympics; July 27-29 FGC Senior Championships; July 31-Aug. 4 Junior Nationals; July 31-Aug. 4 Southern Zones; and Aug. 2-5 Futures Championships.

Marc Rojas, 24, and Kathleen Golding, 17, lead SOFLO’s 17-swimmer contingent at sectionals. SOFLO will also field 19 relay teams for 12 relay events.

The remaining SOFLO squad is: Maya Coffey, 16; Jonathan Farah, 20; Molly Golding, 15; John Paul Handal, 15; Kelley Heron, 18; C.J. Kopecki, 18; Paige Lane, 15; Lance Lesage, 15; Melissa Marinheiro, 21; Leonardo Mateus, 16; Juan Pineda, 16; Ricardo Roche, 18; Rafael Rodriguez, 16; Juan Serna, 16; and Robert Wilson, 15.

In addition to SOFLO, among other teams entered are host Gator Swim Club, Bolles, Sarasota YMCA, Gulliver Swim Club, Club Seminole, Westminster Academy, Trinity Prep, Metro Aquatics, Swim Florida, Highlander and Hurricane Aquatics.

The field will be star-studded headed by Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Lochte, Kelly Fertel, Penny Oleksiak, Jared Pike, Hannah Burns and Morgan Tankersley.

In last year’s south sectional meet in Orlando, SOFLO was sixth in combined among a field of 60 teams; the women were sixth and men finished seventh.

The Speedo Sectionals Series display some of the top swimming talent across the U.S. The series has several stops in various zones.

South Florida Aquatic Club Swimmers Successful At Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

ORLANDO, July 9, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club finished a successful run at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Sunday at the YMCA of Central Florida Aquatic Center.

SOFLO’s Marc Rojas, 23, competing in his final tuneup meet for the upcoming FINA World Aquatic Championships in Budapest, Hungary, was second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:22.70 after going 2:26.73, fifth fastest in prelims. He finished with 52 points in high point.

Rojas will compete in the breaststroke events at his first worlds representing the Dominican Republic.

During the four-day meet, SOFLO’s Juan Serna, 15, Molly Golding, 14, and Kayla Cunningham, 14, earned their first cuts for the Aug. 4-7 Futures Championships in Nashville, Tenn. SOFLO now has a total of thirteen swimmers qualified for the prestigious USA Swimming meet.

South Florida Aquatic Club finished sixth among a field of 60 teams in the combined team standings with 1,187 points. SOFLO women were sixth with 595 points and men were seventh with 466.

In other Sunday races:

Melissa Marinheiro, 20, was eighth in the 800-meter freestyle in a best time of 9:10.70, shaving 0.49 off her previous best of 9:11.19. She finished with 47 points in high point.

Molly Golding, 14, swam a best time in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:43.52, dropping 0.97 off her previous best of 2:44.49.

SOFLO’s women’s 400-meter freestyle relay was fourth in 4:00.16 with Kathleen Golding, Kelley Heron, Jessica Rodriguez and Marinheiro.

Ricardo Roche was 12th in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:09.91.

SOFLO had 23 swimmers (14 men and 9 women) competing in 127 individual events and 24 relay teams in 12 relay events against several stacked teams with college and international swimmers.

SOFLO’s Atkinson Picks Up Two More Wins At Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone Sectionals; SOFLO Sixth Among 60 Teams

ORLANDO, July 8, 2017—A night after winning two races and breaking a Jamaican national record, SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson added two more wins at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Saturday at the YMCA of Central Florida Aquatic Center.

Atkinson, 28, a four-time Jamaican Olympian, tuning up for the World Cup Series, won the 50-meter breaststroke in 30.98, just shy of her 30.11 best time, and 50-meter butterfly in 26.82, off her best time of 26.67.

In her final event of the meet, she was a member of SOFLO’s third place 400-meter medley relay team (4:20.14) with teammates Kelley Heron, Kathleen Golding and Melissa Marinheiro.

Atkinson finished the meet with four individual event wins and one relay win and 80 points in high point.

On Friday she won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:07.61, 100-meter butterfly in a national record 59.94 and was a member of the winning 800-meter freestyle relay.

Kelley Heron, 17, was 11th in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:05.79, just off her best time of 1:05.33.

Kathleen Golding, 16, came up with her fourth best time of the meet, placing tenth in the 50-meter butterfly in 28.09, shaving 1.38 off her previous best. She was also ninth in the 50-meter freestyle in 26.35 and ninth in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:24.07.

Golding, who has 76 points in high point, has the 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter backstroke remaining.

Melissa Marinheiro, 20, was eighth in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:28.46.

Marc Rojas, 23, prepping for the upcoming FINA World Championships in Hungary, was fourth in the 50-meter breaststroke in 29.61.

Ricardo Roche, 17, was 15th in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:09.74, a best time with a time drop of 1.56.

In the 200-meter individual medley, Molly Golding, 14, had a time drop of 5.99 and finished in 2:29.57 bettering her previous best time of 2:35.56.

SOFLO women are fourth in the team standings with 497 points behind Gator Swim Club, Scarlet Aquatics and Swim Florida. The men are eighth with 327 and the team is sixth overall among combined teams with 950 among a field of 60 state, national and international teams.

Ricardo Roche, Mixed Medley Relay Lead SOFLO On Day One Of Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone Sectionals

ORLANDO, July 6, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club had two top 10 finishes on opening night of the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Thursday at the YMCA of Central Florida Aquatic Center.

SOFLO’s “A” mixed 200-meter medley relay team of Kelley Heron, Marc Rojas, Jessica Rodriguez and Luke Lezotte finished fourth in 1:56.33.

SOFLO’s “B” relay of Ricardo Roche, Samuel Quintero, Kathleen Golding and Jennifer Rodriguez were just two places behind their teammates, placing sixth in 1:56.97.

Roche, 17, was also sixth in the 800-meter freestyle in a best time 8:29.01, shaving 4.72 seconds off his previous best. Roche has 13 points after the first night in high point.

Roche was also a member of SOFLO’s 12th place 200-meter medley relay.

In the team competition, Scarlet Aquatics leads the combined (288) and men’s (108) team totals and Gator Swim Club lead the women’s (124). SOFLO is tenth in the combined team standings with 99 points.

SOFLO Swimmers, Coaches Ready For Busy Summer; First Up Sectionals In Orlando

July 5, 2017—The championship season kicks off on Thursday for South Florida Aquatic Club.

After months of training and lead-up meets, swimmers and coaches have a jam-packed schedule of top meets over the next six weeks.

First up is the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships that begin Thursday at the YMCA of Central Florida Aquatic Center.

After that it’s the July 14-16 Area 3 Championships hosted by South Florida Aquatic Club at Academic Village Pool; July 21-23 FGC Junior Olympics at Sailfish Splash Waterpark; July 28-30 FGC Senior Championships at Coral Springs; Aug. 1-5 Southern Zone Senior Championships in College Station, Tex.; and Aug. 4-7 Futures Championships in Nashville.

And of course, there is the 17th FINA World Aquatic Championships in Budapest, Hungary, with the swimming pool events scheduled for July 23-30. Open water is set for July 15-22.

SOFLO’s Marc Rojas, representing the Dominican Republic, will make his world championship debut. SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson will coach Rojas and the Jamaican national team without Alia Atkinson.

Rojas, 23, will fine tune prep this weekend for worlds at sectionals. He is seeded second in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:03.61, second in the 50-meter breaststroke in 28.90 and third in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:18.97.

Atkinson and SOFLO teammate Kathleen Golding are among top-seeds in the women’s field.

Atkinson, 28, a four-time Olympian for Jamaica, who opted not to compete at worlds instead will compete for prize money in the FINA World Cup Series.

For sectionals, Atkinson is seeded first in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:05.93, first in the 50-meter breaststroke in 30.11, first in the 50-meter butterfly in 26.67. It is Atkinson’s first major meet in Florida since the FGC Senior Championships at SOFLO in late March.

Golding, 16, is seeded first in the 100-meter freestyle in 56.31. Golding is also seeded third in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:53.68 and third in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:19.38.

SOFLO’s 400-meter freestyle relay is top seed in 3:50.75 just ahead of Gator Swim Club in 3:50.77.

Among other top SOFLO seeds are:

University of Florida-bound Jessica Rodriguez, 18, and Kelley Heron, 17, are also among top three seeds. Heron is seeded second in the 50-meter backstroke in 30.44. Rodriguez is seeded second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:36.88.

SOFLO is sending 23 swimmers (14 men and 9 women) to compete in 127 individual events. SOFLO will also field 24 relay teams for 12 relay events.

Among top swimmers in the field are Arkady Vyatchanin of New York Athletic Club, Adreina Pinto and Isabella Paez of Metro Aquatics, Iliana Oikonomou of Hurricane Aquatics and Jan Switkowski of Gator Swim Club.

The Speedo Sectionals Series display some of the top swimming talent across the U.S. The series has several stops.

South Florida Aquatic Club Sweeps Relays On Day One Of Speedo Champions Series At Plantation Aquatic Complex

March 12, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club got off to a great start Thursday night at the Speedo Sectional Championships at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

SOFLO swept the women’s relays and had six swimmers in the Top 20 of the men’s distance event at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships.

SOFLO won the women’s 200-meter medley relay in 1:58.17 with Melissa Marinheiro, Valentina Artemova, world record holder Alia Atkinson and 14-year-old Kathleen Golding.

SOFLO’s “B” relay was 13th in 2:08.15 duplicating its entry time with Kelley Heron, Lisa Blackburn, Kylie Herman and Carly Swanson.

SOFLO also won the women’s 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:47.60 with Artemova, Lisa Blackburn, Atkinson and Golding. Its’ “B” relay was 17th in 1:56.43 with a young lineup of Melissa Marinheiro, Kelley Heron, Carly Swanson and Kylie Herman.

SOFLO’s “A” men’s 200-meter medley relay of Timothy Wynter, Marc Rojas, CJ Kopecki and Ryan Capote was sixth in 1:50.50.

SOFLO’s men’s “B” 200-meter medley relay was 11th in 1:55.05 with another young lineup of Esteban Diaz-Velasco, 15, Ervin Marin, 15, Alfredo Mesa, 16, and Juan Lucas, 16.

SOFLO’s “A” relay was ninth in the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:40.95 with Ryan Capote, Marc Rojas, Timothy Wynter and Ervin Marin. SOFLO’s “B” relay was 14th in 1:43.67 with Juan Lucas, CJ Kopecki, Esteban Diaz-Velasco and Alfredo Mesa.

SOFLO’s distance swimmers did well in the 800-meter freestyle with six swimmers placing in the Top 20.

Rafael Rodriguez, 13, was SOFLO’s top men’s finisher placing seven in the 800 in a best time 8:44.12, a 22.87-second drop.

CJ Kopecki, 15, was ninth in 8:47.20, also a best time and drop of 2.03 seconds.

Samuel Asnis, 16, was 16th in a best time 8:59.17, a 0.87 drop. Ricardo Roche, 15, was 17th in a best time 9:01.20, a 59.12 time drop. Juan Diaz, 15, was 18th in a best time 9:03.84, dropping 1:12.84 minutes. Leonardo Mateus, 13, was 20th in a best time 9:04.16, dropping 1:11.14 minutes.

SOFLO is fifth in the combined team standings with 171 points. The women’s team is third with 88 points and men’s team is fourth with 83 points.

“I thought we started off really well the first night,” SOFLO coach Chris Andersons said. “Our relays looked great and we had some personal bests in the 800. Our team really came together.”

Kate Magill of Seacoast Swimming Association and Franco Lupoli of Azura won the distance freestyle events.

Magill, 15, won the women’s 1500-meter freestyle in a career-best 17:26.51, dropping 42.69 from her previous best. She won by nearly 11 seconds.

Lupoli, 20, won the men’s 800-meter freestyle in 8:18.57, outsprinting Alejandro Gomez of Gator Swim Club by a half second, 8:18.57-8:19.06.

A capacity field of 650 swimmers from 60 teams are competing in the four-day meet. A full schedule resumes on Friday with prelims and finals.
