South Florida Aquatic Club Ends Successful Southern Zone South Sectional Championships With Highest Finish, More Time Standards

GAINESVILLE, July 14, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club had its most successful Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships in team history at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool.

On Sunday, the Sharks finished third among combined teams, third (682 points) among men’s teams and fifth (576 teams) among women’s teams in the four-day, 61-team meet. South Florida Aquatic Club was the highest Florida Gold Coast finisher. Host Gator Swim Club defended its titles.

Lance Lesage, 16, picked up his second Summer Junior National qualifying standard. On Saturday, he got his first junior national cut in the 100-meter backstroke in 58.60 and on Sunday he made his 200-meter backstroke cut with a fifth-place finish in a lifetime-best time of 2:06.42, shaving 2.77 seconds off his previous best of 2:09.19. He finished with 68 points in high point.

Mallory Schleicher, 15, earned her time standard in the 200-meter backstroke to qualify for the USA Swimming Futures Championships in 2:24.54, dropping 3.30 seconds. Schleicher finished with 65 points in high point.

Kathleen Golding, 18, won the 800-meter freestyle in a best time 8:49.37, dropping 18.78 seconds. She finished with 83 points in high point.

Other top SOFLO finishers were:

SOFLO’s 400-meter freestyle relay was second in 3:56.87 with Mary Smutny, Kathleen Golding, Paige Lane and Mallory Schleicher.

Mary Smutny, 18, was third in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:16.36. She finished with 80.5 points in high point.

Schleicher was also fifth in the 800-meter freestyle in a best time 9:08.45, dropping 4.92 off her previous best of 9:13.37.

Rafael Rodriguez, 17, was ninth in the 200-meter butterfly in a best time 2:06.05, dropping 1.20 seconds off his previous best of 2:07.25.

Molly Golding, 16, was 11th in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:43.75. She finished 31 points in high point.

Dominic Bono, 16, dropped 13.74 seconds off his 1500-meter freestyle time in 16:38.08. His previous best was 16:51.80.

In addition to SOFLO, other top teams entered were host and defending champion Gator Swim Club, Bolles, Sarasota YMCA, Azura, Gulliver Swim Club, Club Seminole, Westminster Academy, Trinity Prep, Metro Aquatics, Swim Florida, Highlander and Hurricane Aquatics.

At last year’s event, SOFLO finished fifth (1,050 points) among combined teams behind host Gator Swim Club (3,007), Bolles (1,453), East Coast Aquatic Club (1,169) and Swim Florida (1,061) among 60 teams. SOFLO men finished fourth (481) and women (491) were fifth.

The Speedo Sectionals Series showcases some of the top swimming talent across the U.S. The series has several stops in various zones.

SOFLO Men Remain Second; Golding, Lesage Top Finishers After Day Two Of Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

GAINESVILLE, July 12, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club men’s team remained in second place after competition heated up on Day Two of the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Friday at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool.

SOFLO is second among a field of 52 men’s teams with 311 points. Defending champion Gator Swim Club is leading with 664 and pulling away.

SOFLO women are fourth among a field of 48 women’s teams with 232 points. Gator Swim Club also leads the women’s standings with 619 points followed by the Sarasota YMCA Sharks with 552 and Blue Dolfins with 444.

Kathleen Golding and Lance Lesage led SOFLO in second day action.

Florida-bound Golding, 18, was fifth in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:52.51. She has 25 points in high point.

Lesage, 16, was ninth in the 50-meter backstroke in a best time 27.70 with a time drop of 0.18. He has 20 points in high point.

Dominic Bono, 16, had a nice time drop of 6.93 seconds in the 400-meter individual medley to finish 14th in 4:39.34, the first time Bono has cracked 4:40 in the event. He first bettered his previous best of 4:46.27 in prelims in 4:40.96 and then dropped even more time in finals.

SOFLO’s men’s 800-meter freestyle relay was fifth in 8:00.21 with Lesage, Philopatier Ibrahim, Rafael Rodriguez and Miguel Sierra. The women’s relay was seventh in 8:49.18 with Paige Lane, Kathleen Golding, Mallory Schleicher and Sarah Acevedo.

Venezuelan Marco Guarente, an Azura Florida Aquatics alum and Cypress Bay High School graduate, won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:02.81. Guarente is a junior at University of Florida.

SOFLO has 23 swimmers competing in the meet.

SOFLO Mixed Relay Wins; Rafael Rodriguez Drops Time; SOFLO Men Take Second On Day One Of Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

GAINESVILLE, July 11, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club had a big opening night at the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Thursday at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool.

SOFLO men’s team is second with 165 points and SOFLO women’s team is tied for sixth with 104 among a field of 29 teams. SOFLO has 23 swimmers competing in the meet.

SOFLO’s mixed 200-meter medley relay team won big in 1:54.15 ahead of St. Andrew’s in 1:56.32. The relay of Lance Lesage (27.20), Juan Pablo Pineda (30.11), Kathleen Golding (29.09) and Paige Lane (27.75) dropped 0.36 seconds off its entry time of 1:54.51.

SOFLO’s men’s 200-meter medley relay was second in 1:48.17, dropping 3.79 off its entry time of 1:51.96. The relay of Lance Lesage (27.01), Juan Pablo Pineda (30.44), Miguel Sierra (26.01) and Rafael Rodriguez (24.71).

SOFLO men also finished sixth in the 200-meter freestyle relay with Robert Wilson, Lance Lesage, Rafael Rodriguez and Miguel Sierra in 1:40.35.

SOFLO women also had eighth and 12th place relay finishes.

Rodriguez opened the meet with a best time in the 800-meter freestyle in 8:38.11, shaving 2.08 seconds off his previous best of 8:40.19. His opening split was 1:00.31 and closing split 1:03.51.

SOFLO Swimmers Ready For This Week’s Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

GAINESVILLE, July 10, 2018—The championship season continues Thursday for the South Florida Aquatic Club Sharks.

After months of training and competing in local meets, SOFLO’s talented swimmers have a packed schedule of top meets in July and August.

First up is the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships that begin Thursday at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool.

After this week’s four-day meet there is the July 18-21 FGC Junior Olympics, July 26-28 FGC Senior Championships and Aug. 1-4 USA Swimming Futures Championships.

Mary Smutny, Kathleen Golding, Lance Lesage and Rafael Rodriguez lead SOFLO’s 23-swimmer contingent at sectionals. SOFLO will also field 24 relay teams.

Smutny, 18, will swim five events: 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle.

Golding, 18, will swim five events: 50-meter backstroke, 400-meter individual medley, 50-meter freestyle, 400- and 800-meter freestyle.

Lesage, 16, will swim six events: 200-meter freestyle, 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter backstroke, 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter backstroke.

Rodriguez, 17, will swim six events: 800-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 400-meter individual medley, 200-meter individual medley, 400-meter freestyle and 200-meter butterfly.

SOFLO’s Smutny, Pineda, Lesage Top Finishers; SOFLO Third Among Teams At Speedo Champion Series Southern Zone South Sectionals

PLANTATION, March 11, 2019—Mary Smutny of South Florida Aquatic Club finished on a good note in one of the most exciting women’s races on the final day of the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Sunday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

In a two-woman race, Smutny, 18, University of Texas-bound this fall, won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:15.63, edging Sarasota’s Isabel Traba in 2:15.05. Smutny was also a member of SOFLO’s runner-up 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:55.27 along with Alia Atkinson, Kathleen Golding and Gaby Banks.

Smutny was SOFLO’s top finisher in high points, placing seventh with 128 points edging out teammate Alia Atkinson, eighth with 124. Rafael Rodriguez was top boys finisher in sixth place with 112 points.

SOFLO teammate Juan Pablo Pineda was second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:27.60. Berkeley’s Ryaan Hatoum won in 2:23.21.

Lance Lesage was third in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:09.84. Dan Cross of LCLA won in 2:05.74.

South Florida Aquatic Club finished third among the boys and girls teams. The girls totaled 852 and the boys had 776. Azura Florida Aquatics won the boys team title with 1,116.5 points. Sarasota YMCA won the girls team title with 1,432 points.

SOFLO had 35 qualified swimmers compete in 155 individual events and 12 relay events race in the long course meet.

A large field competed over four days in one of four designated USA Swimming zones. The others are Eastern, Central and Western Zone Sectionals. The meet attracts some of the top swimming talent from across the United States and internationally.

Among Florida Gold Coast teams entered were Azura Florida Aquatic, East Coast Aquatic Club, Boca Raton Swim Team, North Palm Beach, Martin County, Coral Springs Swim Club, Sunrise, TS Aquatics, and host Plantation Swim Team.

Atkinson Wins Third Event On Day Three Of Speedo Champion Series Southern Zone South Sectionals

PLANTATION, March 9, 2019—Alia Atkinson won her third event of the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Saturday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The four-time Jamaican Olympian and world short course record holder won the 50-meter breaststroke in 31.00. Teammate Olivia Dinehart was fifth in the event in 34.59.

Atkinson was also second in the 50-meter butterfly in 27.14 behind top seed Marie Wattel of LA College Aquatic Team in 26.40. Atkinson leads the women’s high point with 124 points. SOFLO teammate Mallory Schleicher, 15, is also in the Top 10, tenth with 86 points.

SOFLO’s Mary Smutny was second in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:19.34 and Schleicher was eighth in 4:28.08.

SOFLO boys 400-meter medley relay was fourth in 3:59.10 with Lance Lesage, Juan Pablo Pineda, Rafael Rodriguez and Robert Wilson.

Brazilian Bruno Fratus of Coral Springs Swim Club, coming off fall shoulder surgery, looked strong winning the 50-meter freestyle in 22.15.

South Florida Aquatic Club girls remained in third place with 652 points behind Sarasota YMCA with 1,018.5 and East Coast Aquatic Club with 820.5.

South Florida Aquatic Club boys dropped to fourth place with 515 points behind Azura Florida Aquatics with 835.5, Sarasota YMCA with 584 and Colorado Stars with 533.

Sarasota YMCA and Azura Florida Aquatics have all but clinched the team titles.

SOFLO has 35 qualified swimmers compete in 155 individual events and 12 relay events race in the long course meet.

A large field is competing over four days in one of four designated USA Swimming zones. The others are Eastern, Central and Western Zone Sectionals. The meet attracts some of the top swimming talent from across the United States and internationally.

SOFLO’s Atkinson Double Winner; SOFLO Third Among Teams On Day Two Of Speedo Champion Series Southern Zone South Sectionals

PLANTATION, March 8, 2019—South Florida Aquatic Club men’s and women’s teams are third after Day Two of the of the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Friday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The women’s team is third with 393 points. Sarasota YMCA leads with 630 and East Coast Aquatic Club is second with 461 points.

The men’s team is also third with 355 points. Azura Florida Aquatics is first with 485 and Sarasota YMCA is second with 370.

Four-time Jamaican Olympian and world short course record holder Alia Atkinson, 30, won two events. Atkinson won her signature event 100-meter breaststroke in 1:08.79. She also won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:01.38 just ahead of Talia Bates of Gator Swim Club in 1:01.42. Atkinson has 64 points in high point.

Mary Smutny, 18, finished third in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:04.16. She was third fastest in morning prelims in 2:05.48. Smutny has 42 points in high point.

Rafael Rodriguez, 17, finished fourth in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:39.27. He was second fastest in morning prelims in 4:39.05. He has 65 points in high points.

Mallory Schleicher, 15, posted back-to-back best times in the 200-meter freestyle. Seeded 2:11.74, she went 2:10.64 in morning prelims and 2:07.69 in finals for a 4.05 time drop.

Schleicher also has back-to-back best times in the 400-meter individual medley. She went 5:06.74 in morning prelims and came back at night in 5:04.62. She was seeded in 5:07.59. Schleicher has 49 points in high points.

Robert Wilson, 16, swam back-to-back best times in the 200-meter freestyle. Seeded 2:01.18, he went 2:00.61 in prelims and 2:00.22 in finals for an 0.96 time drop. He has four points in high point.

Lance Lesage, 16, broke 2 minutes in the 200-meter freestyle and had back-to-back best times. Seeded 2:02.67, he lowered it first in morning prelims in 2:01.18 and broke 2 minutes in finals in 1:59.78 for a total time drop of 2.89. Lesage has 20 points in high point.

Juan Pablo Pineda, 16, had back-to-back best times in the 100-meter breaststroke. Seeded in 1:08.50, he lowered it in morning prelims in 1:08.50 and bettered in finals in 1:07.92 for an 0.77 time drop. He has 15 points in high point.

Javier Roman, 15, has back-to-back best times in the 400-meter individual medley. Seeded 4:56.25, he went 4:54.75 in morning prelims and bettered it in 4:52.33 for a 3.92 time drop. He has four points in high point.
