SOFLO’s Izzy Wilson Takes Fifth At USA Swimming Women’s 7.5K Junior National Open Water Championship

SARASOTA, April 23, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Izzy Wilson finished fifth at the USA Swimming Women’s 7.5K Junior National Open Water Championship Sunday at Nathan Benderson Park.

On the third and final day of competition, Wilson, 17, finished fifth among a national-caliber field in 1:35.10.19. She was the only Florida Gold Coast swimmer in the field.

Claire Weinstein of Sandpipers of Nevada, third in the 10K on Friday and member of the U.S. World Championship team last year, won the girls 7.5K title in 1:34:00, 16 seconds ahead of NOVA of Virginia’s Claire Stuhlmacher in 1:34:16.56. Sarasota Sharks’ Lolly Milbaum was third in 1:34:38.41.

Ryan Erisman of Laker Swim, runner-up in the Junior 5K race on Saturday, won the boys 7.5K title in 1:26:12.

Two days after racing the 10K swim in the World Championships qualifying race, Katie Grimes and Brennan Gravley were back on course for the 5K. With their bids for Fukuoka already secured, both Sandpipers of Nevada swimmers won titles.

Grimes finished first among the 24 swimmers in the women’s race in 58:37.95, two seconds ahead of Spain’s Angela Martinez (58:39.99). Mariah Denigan, the Indiana swimmer already qualified to join Grimes in the 10K at Worlds, was third in 58:42.49. Anna Auld of University of Florida was 14th in 1:01.57.

Gravley, now competing for the University of Florida, won the men’s race in 55:10.65, a second-and-a-half margin of victory.

SOFLO’s Juan Vallmitjana Sixth At USA Swimming Men’s 5K Junior National Championship; Izzy Wilson Swims 7.5K Sunday

SARASOTA, April 22, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Juan Vallmitjana left a lasting impression at the USA Swimming Men’s 5K Junior National Championship Saturday at Nathan Benderson Park.

Vallmitjana, 14, placed sixth in 1:01:06 for the 3.1-mile race and was the highest placing 14-year-old in the field of 13 open water boys swimmers. Vallmitjana was the only swimmer from the Florida Gold Coast competing against a national-caliber field.

Bolles’ Dillon Brigman won the boys title in 59:01, the only swimmer to break one hour. Max Stewart of Irvine Novaquatics was second in 1:00:17 and Colin Jacobs of Sarasota Sharks was third in 1:00:47.

Daisy Collins of North Carolina Aquatic Club won the girls race in 1:03:14. Rylee Erisman of Laker Swim was second in 1:03:28 and Jane Wheeler of Crimson Aquatics was third in 1:04:16. There were 21 swimmers in the girls field.

On Sunday, SOFLO teammate Izzy Wilson competes in the junior girls 7.5K on the final day of racing. The senior level 5K will also be held.

SOFLO White Rules The Pool For Second Year In A Row At SOFLO White & Blue Intrasquad Meet

PEMBROKE PINES, April 22, 2023–Well done SOFLO White. Take a bow.

Defending champion SOFLO White won its second consecutive combined and boys team titles Saturday in the second annual SOFLO White & Blue Dual Meet at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO White won the combined 1,374.5-1,306.5 and men’s title, 673-608. SOFLO Blue hung on to win the women’s title, 698.5-674.5.

SOFLO White took the early lead after Day One and never looked back.

Unlike last year when SOFLO White was trailing after opening night featuring the older swimmers, SOFLO White led the combined team totals, 762.5-724.5 and men’s team totals, 388-318, after Friday. SOFLO Blue led the women’s team totals, 406.5- 374.5, and held on for the win.

Catalina Akpabio, 10, of SOFLO Blue led the girls with four wins: 100 butterfly, 1:35.83; 100 freestyle, 1:21.57; 100 backstroke, 1:31.31; and 100 breaststroke 1:46.74. She totaled 36 points.

Stephania Dmitrova, 10, was a double winner for SOFLO White in the 200 freestyle in 2:55.07 and 200 IM in 3:16.59. She totaled 31 points.

Ethan Phan and Gabriel Ferrer were double winners for SOFLO Blue and Leonardo Zuluaga was a double winner for SOFLO White.

Phan, 10, won the 200 IM in 3:03.79 and 100 backstroke in 1:32.56. Ferrer, 12, won the 100 freestyle in 1:21.33 and 400 freestyle in 5:57.81. Zuluaga, 10, won the 100 butterfly in 1:36.23 and 100 breaststroke in 1:41.53.

More than 100 swimmers competed in individual events and relays over two days in a loud, spirited atmosphere complete with body paintings, blue masks, blue and white shakers, great signs and loud team cheers that could be heard in Fort Lauderdale.

SOFLO White Rocks The Pool On Opening Night Of SOFLO White & Blue Intrasquad Meet

PEMBROKE PINES, April 21, 2023–Defending champion SOFLO White took the early lead after Day One of the second annual SOFLO White & Blue Dual Meet Friday night at Academic Village Pool.

Unlike last year when White was trailing after opening night, White leads the combined team totals, 762.5-724.5 and men’s team totals, 388-318. However, Blue leads the women’s team totals, 406.5- 374.5.

It will all come down to Saturday’s final session featuring the talented 12-and-unders. The races begin at 11 a.m. ending about 2:35 p.m.

More than 100 swimmers are competing in individual events and relays over two days in a loud, spirited atmosphere.

Awards will be presented to top eight finishers, improvement, team spirit, team support and sportsmanship, determined by SOFLO coaches, USA Swimming official and Booster Club Board of Director member.

Grimes, Garach Win U.S. Open Water 10K Titles; SOFLO’s Vallmitjana Swims Junior 5K Boys’ Race Saturday

SARASOTA, April 21, 2023—Katie Grimes won the women’s 10K title in the U.S. Open Water National Championships Friday at Nathan Benderson Park.

In a close race, Grimes, 17, of Sandpipers of Nevada surged to overtake the field and won in 1:58.08. Her club teammates Mariah Denigan (1:58:23) and Claire Weinstein (1:58.24) were second and third. University of Florida’s Anna Auld of West Palm Beach was 13th in 2:03:07. Blair Stoneburg of Treasure Coast Aquatics was 19th in 2:05:15.

Grimes was coming off of an impressive 400 IM at the Fran Crippen SMOC last Saturday. She was close to the NAG record for 17-18 (4:31.81), 3/100ths of a second off Elizabeth Beisel’s time in 2011. The time was the second fastest in the world this year.

Grimes, the 2022 World Championship silver medalist in the women’s 1500 meter and 400 IM, was the 10K favorite. She won gold last year at the World Junior Open Water Championships in both the girls 7.5K and team event, and placed fifth in the women’s 10K at the 2022 World Championships.

In another close race, Carlos Garach of Spain won the men’s 10K title in 1:51.05.65 just ahead of Brennan Gravely, the top American finisher in 1:51.05.78 His brother Dylan Gravely was third in 1:51.07.

Brennan Gravley won the Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year in 2022, an honor named the Fran Crippen Memorial award. He finished tied for tenth in the 5K and 12th in the 10K at worlds. He was part of the American team that finished seventh. Gravley is a senior at University of Florida.

Qualifying spots for the 2023 World Championships were decided off national championships. The winners of the men’s and women’s 10K, Garach and Grimes, both earned a spot in both the 5K and 10K events. The second slot at worlds will go to the top American finisher at the Italian leg of the World Aquatics Open Water World Cup.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Juan Vallmitjana, 14, competes Saturday in the junior boys 5K national race. Teammate Izzy Wilson, 17, swims Sunday in the junior girls 7.5K.

Bragging Rights On Line In SOFLO White & Blue Intrasquad Meet; It’s On Like Donkey Kong

PEMBROKE PINES, April 21, 2023–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will turn up the team spirit at the second annual SOFLO White & Blue Dual Meet Friday and Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

The intrasquad meet begins Friday at 6 p.m. with Session I for swimmers in 13-and over and 11-and-over events, expected to end around 9:42 p.m. On Saturday, Session II for 12-and-unders begins 11 a.m., ending at 2:35 p.m.

More than 100 swimmers will compete in individual events and relays over two days in a loud, spirited atmosphere.

In last year’s inaugural event, SOFLO Blue took an early lead in the combined and boys team standings Friday night, but SOFLO White bounced back to win combined, boys and girls team titles.

Led by the performances of the 12-and-unders in Saturday’s highly-charged action, SOFLO White won the combined, 1,355-1,320; boys, 598-591; and girls, 609-581 and earned bragging rights for a year.

After Friday night’s 13-and-over action, SOFLO Blue led combined, 723-719, and boys team standings, 372-277. SOFLO White led the girls, 370-275.

Twelve SOFLO Swimmers Named To Florida Gold Coast Open Water Zone Team

PEMBROKE PINES, April 17, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club will be well-represented at the June 2-4 Southern Zone Open Water Championships at Lake Echo, Seven Lakes, N.C.

SOFLO swimmers on the Florida Gold Coast open water zone team are Jemma Baldwin, 12; Juan Vallmitjana, 14; Amelie Bicerne, 13; Elise Dinehart, 14; Carley Kaplan, 14; Jianna Amores, 12; Enrique Rodriguez, 18; Sophie Szutkowski, 12; Abraham Penaloza, 15; Jaden Amores, 15; Jenesys Amores, 14; and Sarah Vasquez, 15.

The FGC Open Water Zone Team was selected after the local open water qualifier and based on a tiered selection. Alternates were considered through sixth place to fill open spots. Then USA Swimming power points for the 1,650/1,500 was used to fill any remaining spots.

The competition begins with check-in on Friday, June 2nd from 3:30-7 p.m. All swimmers are expected to participate in both Saturday and Sunday events.

SOFLO Swimmers Shine In SOFLO 10 & Under Spring Invitational; Acosta, Barber Win Events

PEMBROKE PINES, April 15, 2023–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got in some good racing Saturday at the SOFLO 10&Under Spring Invitational at Academic Village Pool.

Ivy Acosta, 7, was a double winner in the 25-yard breaststroke in a best time 24.37, dropping 2.53 and 25-yard butterfly in 20.97. She was also third in the 25-yard freestyle in 19.01 and third in the 25-yard backstroke in a best time 22.47, dropping 1.62.

Molly Barber, 7, won the 25-yard freestyle in a best time 17.76, dropping 1.91. She was also second in the 25-yard backstroke in a best time 22.00, dropping 1.70; third in the 25-yard butterfly in a best time 22.05, dropping 1.23; and fourth in the 25-yard breaststroke in 26.99.

In the boys’ competition, Santiago Zuluaga, 8, was second in the 25-yard butterfly in a best time 22.14, dropping 3.20.

Lincoln Callaway Coy, 10, was second in the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 37.45, dropping 1.87.

Andres Gomez, 7, was third in the 25-yard freestyle in a best time 17.23, dropping 0.49.

Alexander Patricoff, 8, was fourth in the 25-yard breaststroke in a best time 26.91, dropping 2.44.

SOFLO had 35 swimmers (20 girls and 15 boys) compete in 151 individual events and one relay.

Regan Smith Double Winner; SOFLO’s Julio Horrego Makes Second “C” Final At TYR Westmont Pro Series

WESTMONT, Illinois, April 14, 2023—Olympian Regan Smith was a double winner at the USA Swimming TYR Westmont Pro Swim Series Friday at FMC Aquatic Center.

Smith, training with Arizona State head coach Bob Bowman’s pro group in Tempe since August, won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:07.92, her best time this year. She finished ahead of Lindsay Looney in 2:10.19.

Smith also won the 100-meter backstroke with another huge cushion in 57.90 ahead of Isabelle Stadden in 59.38.

“I love the heat,” Smith said of her new home in Arizona during interviews on USA Swimming’s YouTube broadcast. “I lived in the cold long enough and I wanted to get away from it. University of Florida alum Kieran Smith won his second event in the 400-meter freestyle in 3:50.25.

SOFLO’s Julio Horrego finished 23rd in the 200 breaststroke prelims in 2:22.96 to make his second “C” final which he scratched. He also made the “C” final in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.58. Horrego has the 50 breaststroke to swim on Saturday. The meet is serving as a gauge for where Horrego is in his training in the lead up to Oct. 20-Nov. 5 XIX Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

The three-day meet and third stop on the 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series concludes with full prelims and finals action on Saturday.

Prelims and finals are being live streamed on USA Swimming’s YouTube. The final day of the meet will be on CNBC. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals 6 p.m. Central Time.

SOFLO Hosts 10 & Under Spring Invitational Saturday At Academic Village Pool

PEMBROKE PINES, April 14, 2023–South Florida Aquatic Club’s up-and-coming swimmers will get a chance to gauge their training Saturday at the SOFLO 10&Under Spring Invitational at Academic Village Pool.

The one-day meet begins 11 a.m. and projected to end about 1:22 p.m.

SOFLO will have 35 swimmers (20 girls and 15 boys) compete in 151 individual events and one relay.

Among SOFLO’s top-seeded swimmers are:
Molly Barber, 7, 25-yard backstroke, 23.70.
Ivy Acosta, 7, 25-yard butterfly, 18.87; 25-yard freestyle, 18.71.
