St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders Sweep West Broward, Flanagan; SOFLO’s Marinheiro, Lesage, Handal Double Winners

FORT LAUDERDALE, September 4, 2019—St. Thomas Aquinas came up big sweeping West Broward and Flanagan in a tri-meet Wednesday night.

The girls team defeated West Broward, 130-48, and Flanagan, 144-31. In the other dual, West Broward defeated Flanagan, 103-48.

The boys team defeated West Broward, 99-70, and Flanagan, 128-39. West Broward topped Flanagan, 117-49.

The girls team swept the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. The boys team swept the 100-yard freestyle.

There were two girls double winners. West Broward’s Michelle Marinheiro won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.35 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.56. Marinheiro won an exciting 200-yard freestyle out-touching Gabriella Chambers of St. Thomas Aquinas, second in 2:02.82.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Gina Fimiano wpn the 200-yard individual medley in 2:21.38 and 100-yard freestyle in 59.02.

In the 100-yard backstroke, St. Thomas Lalainie Bannister nipped teammate Olivia Wiebe, 1:07.06-1:07.09.

St. Thomas Aquinas girls won seven individual events and swept all three relays.

St. Thomas Aquinas had two boys double winners.

Jack Faulkner won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.20 and 100-yard freestyle in 53.35.

Lance Lesage won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.71 and 100-yard backstroke in 53.09.

John Paul Handal of West Broward won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.73 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.03.

The Raiders won six boys’ individual events and swept all three relays.

Pembroke Pines Charter Ends Regular Season On Winning, Fun Note; Sweeps Flanagan, West Broward

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 11, 2018—It was hard to tell who was having more fun Wednesday night in a tri-meet at Academic Village Pool–the parents or the swimmers.

Pembroke Pines Charter ended its regular season on a winning note sweeping Flanagan and West Broward but the best part was the final race pitting seniors against parents along with West Broward principal Brad Fatout.

Pembroke Pines Charter girls team defeated Flanagan, 133-49 and West Broward, 111-76. West Broward defeated Flanagan, 117-58.

The Jaguars swept all three girls relays and won all but two individual events.

Victoria Torres, enjoying an outstanding freshman season, was a double winner for Pembroke Pines Charter. She won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.21 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.03.

Jaguars underclassmen trio Valentina Terry, a sophomore, Maria Herne, a sophomore and freshman Jena Legaspi were individual winners.

The Jaguars swept the top three places in the 100-yard freestyle with Maria Herne, Gisselle Claros and Kathia Jaramillo.

West Broward’s Maya Coffey was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.09 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.32.

Teammate Michelle Marinheiro, the last of three swimming sisters, won the 500-yard freestyle by more than a body length in 5:33.27.

In the boys’ competition, Pembroke Pines Charter defeated Flanagan, 115-73, and West Broward, 101-87. West Broward topped Flanagan, 105-82.

In an exciting boys’ 200-yard medley relay, West Broward won in 1:49.87 ahead of Pembroke Pines Charter in 1:50.44 with relay swimmers Nicolas Munoz, John Paul Handal, Marcos Vazquez and Mark DeGracia.

Flanagan won the 200-yard freestyle relay and Pembroke Pines Charter won the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Senior Sebastian Sevilla, 17, and junior Rafael Rodriguez, 16, were double winners for the Jaguars.

Sevilla won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.32 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.71.

Rodriguez won the 200-yard individual medleyin 1:58.59 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.69.

Cypress Bay Sweeps West Broward, Western In Tri-Meet

WESTON, October 4, 2018—Fresh off its Broward County Athletic Association Championship victory, Cypress Bay continued its winning ways over West Broward and Western Wednesday at Weston Family YMCA.

The girls’ team defeated West Broward, 274-179, and Western, 275-183.

The Lightning girls won all three relays and all individual events except one, won by West Broward’s Michelle Marinheiro in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.23.

Andrea Toledano was a double winner for Cypress Bay in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.46 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.19.

Teammate Gaby Banks won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.32 and swam leadoff and anchor on two winning relays.

The boys’ team also defeated West Broward, 278-171, and Western, 248-210.

Cypress Bay also won all three relays and every individual race except two by Westerns’s Eduardo Lopez in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.15 and Jose Diaz in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.83.

Among the Lightning’s individual winners were Samuel Manrique, Yesh Mandava, Maxwell Miller, Diego Machado, Tom Liraz and Philopatier Ibraim.

Cooper City Sweeps Taravella, West Broward In BCAA Championship Tuneup

COOPER CITY, September 25, 2018—Cooper City, tuning up for this weekend’s Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship, had no trouble sweeping Taravella and West Broward Monday at the Cowboys’ pool.

The girls team, led by double winners Kathleen Golding, Molly Golding and Solana Capalbo, defeated West Broward, 138-35, and Taravella, 142-27.

University of Florida-bound Kathleen Golding, defending BCAA champion and record holder in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.36 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.96.

Molly Golding won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.25 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.71.

Solana Capalbo won the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.37.

The Cowboys boys’ team, led by double winners Mark Zhang and Robert Wilson, defeated West Broward, 127-48, and Taravella, 137-35.

Zhang won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.76 and 100-yard freestyle in 50.56.

Wilson won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.14 and 100-yard butterfly in 55.96.

Cooper City will be among favorites at Saturday’s BCAA Championships at Plantation Aquatic Complex. Cypress Bay is defending girls and boys champions.

Cooper City Sweeps South Broward, West Broward; SOFLO Swimmers Play Key Role

HOLLYWOOD, September 13, 2018—Cooper City, last season’s surprise team, swept West Broward and South Broward on Wednesday at the Bulldogs’ pool.

The girls’ team defeated West Broward, 76-18, and South Broward, 79-12. West Broward beat South Broward, 56-36.

In the boys competition, the Cowboys defeated South Broward, 63-29, and West Broward, 71-23. South Broward topped West Broward, 66-28.

The girls team was led by double winners Mallory Schleicher, Kathleen Golding, Solana Capalbo and Molly Golding, all South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers.

The Cowboys swept all three relays and won all eight individual events. There was no diving competition.

Schleicher, one of the state’s top open water swimmers, won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.51 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:19.77.

Defending state champion and Florida commit Kathleen Golding won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.60 and 100-yard freestyle in 53.41. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Capalbo won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.03, 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.96 and on the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Molly Golding won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.17 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.22.

The boys team was led by double winner Robert Wilson, also a SOFLO swimmer, in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.95 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.28. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Other SOFLO winners for Cooper City were Javier Roman, John Paul Handal and Alex Golding.

South Broward was led by double winner Andrew Rogatinsky in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.45 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.07.

Pembroke Pines Charter Sweeps Flanagan, West Broward In BCAA Meet Tuneup

October 3, 2017—Pembroke Pines Charter tuned up for Saturday’s Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship against Flanagan and West Broward on Monday at Academic Village Pool.

Pembroke Pines Charter boys and girls team swept BCAA foes Flanagan and West Broward to pick up four wins for 6-1 records.

The Jaguars boys team defeated Flanagan, 116-36 and West Broward 103-59. In the other matchup West Broward defeated Flanagan, 100-53.

The Jaguars girls team topped Flanagan, 116-35, and West Broward, 85-70. West Broward girls defeated Flanagan, 113-31.

In the most competitive dual matchup, West Broward came within two points (41-39) and three points (64-61), but the Jaguars’s talent, depth and youth maintained the lead for the win.

The Jaguars were led by double winners Scholastic All-American Kelley Heron and Katherine DeBarros.

Heron won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:21.52 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.65. DeBarros won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:16.02 and 500-yard freestyle in 6:04.84. Heron and DeBarros were also members of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:13.15 with teammates Victoria Torres and Valentina Terry.

Seventh grader Victoria Torres, the TYR January Swimmer of the Month, also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.84.

Maya Coffey was a double winner for West Broward in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.52 and 100-yard freestyle in 58.08.

The Jaguars boys dominated both West Broward and Flanagan and will be among pre-meet BCAA favorites.

The Jaguars won both the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Against Flanagan, the Jaguars won every event but one.

Against Flanagan, Andres Lares was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.06 and 100-yard butterfly in 55.26 and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Juan Serna of West Broward was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.59 and 100-yard butterfly in 54.56.

Cooper City Tops South Broward, West Broward In Tri-Meet

August 31, 2017—Cooper City High School boys and girls swim teams picked up two wins on Wednesday with victories over South Broward and West Broward.

The girls’ team, led by three double winners, defeated West Broward, 116-60, and South Broward, 117-59.

Freshman Molly Golding, competing in her first high school season, won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.82 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.13 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle winning relays.

Big sister Kathleen Golding, coming off the Speedo Junior Nationals, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.38 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.12. She also swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Solana Capalbo won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.07 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.89 and was on two winning relays.

In the boys’ competition, Cooper City, with two double winners, dominated West Broward, 135-45, and South Broward, 134-42.

Heath Brames won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.90 and 100-yard freestyle in 49.44. He was also a member of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Robert Wilson won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.81 and 100-yard butterfly in 54.89 and anchored the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

South Broward Andrew Rogantinsky was a double winner in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.44 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.78.

Cooper City swept the 1-meter springboard events with Courtney Russo winning the girls event with 240.25 points and Tyler Flowers the boys event with 245.65.
