SOFLO’s Izzy Wilson Among Eleven Florida Gold Coast Swimmers Named USA Swimming Scholastic All-American

COLORADO SPRINGS, October 31, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Izzy Wilson was among 1,135 swimmers from across the nation named to the USA Swimming 2022-2023 Scholastic All-American team.

It is the first time Wilson, a junior at Carrollton School in Miami, distance freestyler and open water swimmer, earned a spot on the team.

Other Florida Gold Coast swimmers earning the honor and number of times they have been named to the team:

Riley Botting, Pine Crest Swimming, second time, Yale commit.

Emma Herrera, Flood Aquatics Swim Team, (FAST), first time, King’s Academy.

Sofia Jorge, Eagle Aquatics, first time, South Florida Heat.

Sara Lin, Pine Crest Swimming, first time, Georgetown commit.

Giulian Martin, Hurricane Aquatics, third time, South Florida Heat.

Erika Pelaez, Eagle Aquatics, third time, North Carolina State commit.

Julia Podkoscielny, Pine Crest Swimming, fourth time, University of Florida freshman.

Dylan Smiley, Miami Country Day Aquatics, second time, Indiana University-Bloomington commit.

Noah Smith, Flood Aquatics Swim Team (FAST), first time, King’s Academy.

Lucas Young, Hurricane Aquatics, first time, Immaculata-LaSalle (Miami).

All athletes will receive a certificate and bag tag. Three and four time senior class honorees will receive a special gift. Awards will be shipped this fall.

Swimmers in grades 9-12 had to maintain a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average and meet the competition criteria during the Sept. 1, 2022-August 31, 2023 qualifying period.

National team members Claire Weinstein and Katie Grimes of Sandpipers of Nevada were the only two swimmers who had perfect scores as event champions while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

There were 621 boys and 514 girls selected. There were 125 seniors with three or four years of being named. Four are open water athletes and 12 were athletes with disabilities.

North Carolina Swimming led all Local Swimming Committees (LSCs) in Scholastic All-America selections this year with 112 athletes. The top club with individual athletes receiving the honor, SwimMAC Carolina (30 athletes), is also from North Carolina.

Athletes by zone are: Southern, 370; Eastern 279; Western 279; Central, 207.

Athletes by grades are: Freshman, 130; Sophomores, 304; Juniors 438; Seniors 263.

Top LSCs are: North Carolina Swimming, 112; Southern California Swimming, 87; Pacific Swimming, 68; Florida Swimming 53; and Virginia Swimming 49.

Top clubs: SwimMac, 30; NOVA of Virginia Aquatics, 22; Lakeside Aquatic Club, 20; Rose Bowl Aquatics, 19; and Nation’s Capital Swim Club, 19.

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 29, 2023—In one of the fastest region meets in the state, St. Andrew’s defended its boys title and South Florida Heat girls, third last year, won Region 4-1A Swimming and Diving Championship titles Saturday at NSU University School Aquatic Complex.

South Florida Heat, led by individual winners Erika Pelaez, Samantha Schoenborn and three winning relays, won the girls title with 346 points. St. Andrew’s was runner-up with 294. Pine Crest and King’s Academy tied for third with 291 points.

St. Andrew’s edged rival Pine Crest, 325-320, to win the boys crown. The Scots won the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. The Scots also had individual winners Diego Balbi and William Domokos-Murphy.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Izzy Wilson of Carrollton, Jaden Amores of Cutler Bay and Austin Nelson of Cutler Bay finished third in their events.

Wilson was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.53 followed by SOFLO teammate Jenesys Amores of Cutler Bay in 5:04.90. Jaden Amores was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.33 and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.95. Nelson was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.56.

South Florida Heat teammates Erika Pelaez and Kaii Winkler continue to get faster and faster leading up to the state meet.

Pelaez won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.26, an automatic All-American time, and 100-yard backstroke in 51.32, also an automatic All-American time breaking her own state record of 51.78 set last year. She also led off the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Winkler, competing in only his fourth meet of the season after breaking his wrist in June, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:35.54 and 100-yard butterfly in 47.19, both automatic All-American times. He also led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay that won in 3:08.72 with teammates Surfiel Santiago, Barron Tate and Peyton Selts.

Emma Herrera was a double winner for King’s Academy in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.49 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.34, both All-American consideration times. Teammate Alyssa Bozzuto won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.99, an automatic All-American time.

St. Andrew’s had two individual winners with Alexia Sotomayor in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.96, an automatic All-American time and Aspen Gersper in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.71, an All-American consideration time.

Salvatore Lanzafame of NSU University School won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.38. Christian Clark of Westminster Academy won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.36.

In a reversal of places from last year’s 1-meter diving, Sean Dowling of Oxbridge upset defending champion Allen Levitis of Pine Crest, 528.55-501.15.

Gulliver Prep Girls, Mater Lakes Boys Capture Region 4-2A Team Titles; Felix Gonzalez Top SOFLO Finisher

STUART, October 29, 2023—Gulliver Prep defended its girls title and Mater Lakes Academy won the boys title in the Region 4-2A Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Sailfish Splash Park.

Gulliver Prep, with three relay and three individual event wins, won with 309 points. Barron Collier finished runner-up for the second year in a row with 241. American Heritage Plantation was third with 209.

Mater Lakes Academy edged American Heritage Plantation by two points, 256-254, to win the boys team title after finishing ninth last year. American Heritage Plantation was fifth last year. Defending champion Pompano Beach finished sixth with 187 points.

American Heritage Plantation, under the guidance of veteran head coach Nobutaka Tan, is the most improved team in Broward County this season.

Gulliver Prep girls swept the 200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relays. Junior Giovanna Musiello was a double winner in the 200 IM in 2:05.77 and 100-yard backstroke in 57.08. Junior Reese Rosenthal won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.33.

Treasure Coast’s Brynn Stoneburg of Jensen Beach was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.28 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.60.

There were two Broward girls winners. Diver Juliet Radich of Cardinal Gibbons continued her domination this season winning the 1-meter title with 520.55 points.

Alani Lopez of Somerset won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.53.

Mater Lakes won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:28.13 just ahead of Mast Academy in 1:28.71. Alfredo Dominguez was Mater’s lone winner in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.11.

American Heritage won the 400-yard freestle relay in 3:16.52 with Rithvik Marri, Gabriel Landron, Alessandro Pereira and Stepan Vandysh. Marri also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.03.

Pompano Beach had two individual champions. Gianni Famiano won the 200 IM in 1:46.03 and Giuliano Brunetti in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.11.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Felix Gonzalez, a junior at Somerset, was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.39.

Gonzalez was one of seven SOFLO swimmers in the region meet. The others were Natalia and Julian Sibug, Kaylee Del Rio, Sofia Gomez and Diego Reveron of Somerset and Carlos Salas of Mater Academy.

The psych sheets for the state meet are expected to be posted Sunday night at fhsaa.com.

Fort Lauderdale Girls, Douglas Boys Repeat As District 10-4A Champions; SOFLO’s Hashan, Marvan Ekanayake Win

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 28, 2023–Fort Lauderdale High School girls and Douglas boys defended their titles in the District 10-4A Swimming and Diving Championship hosted by Nova High School.

Fort Lauderdale, buoyed by its strong girls diving lineup, finished with 469 points to edge Douglas with 450 points.

Douglas boys won the team title with 406 points edging Fort Lauderdale with 359.

The Flying Ls swept the top four spots in the girls 1-meter diving with Hayden Ferenc, 457.05; Sophia Cavaretta, 449.40; Catherine Kilroy, 379.05; and Ginger Boardman, 352.25.

Other Fort Lauderdale winners were Katherine Voet in the 200-yard freestyle, 2:03.23; Syndey Cronin in the 200-yard individual medley, 2:16.59; and Da’Jah German in the 500-yard freestyle, 5:05.76.

The Flying L’s also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:48.32 with D’Ziah German, Voet, Kimoni Elliot and Da’Jah German.

Tawannah McLemore of Taravella was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.12 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.38.

Douglas boys were led by individual winner Lorenzo Herek in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.97.

Makar Goncharov of Fort Lauderdale was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.58 and 100-yard freestyle in 46.86. He also anchored the winning 200-yard medley relay and led off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay.

Fort Lauderdale’s James Boardman won the 1-meter diving title with 596.65 points.

South Florida Aquatic Club brothers Hashan and Marvan Ekanayake of Western led the Wildcats.

Hashan Ekanayake was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.00 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:56.97. Marvan Ekanayake won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.88. Both were members of the second place 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Cypress Bay Girls, Cooper City Boys Win District 11-4A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Mantilla, DeLuna, Caplan, Kim, Hau, Stack Win

MIAMI, October 28, 2023—Cypress Bay girls defended their title and Cooper City boys, runners-up last year, knocked off defending champion Doral Academy to win the District 11-4A Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Goleman High School.

Cypress Bay won with 503 points ahead of Doral Academy with 352 and Cooper City with 237.

Cooper City totaled 453 points followed by Cypress Bay with 416 and Doral with 360.

South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers played a huge role in both teams’ wins.

SOFLO’s Tania Mantilla of Cypress Bay was a double winner and Gabriella DeLuna was an indvidual winner and member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Mantilla won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.08 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.50. Amelie Bicerne was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:35.48.

DeLuna won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.26. DeLuna was also third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.59.

Amelie Bicerne, Mantilla, DeLuna and Sofia Lugo were members of winning relays. Cypress Bay swept all three girls relays.

Carley Kaplan of West Broward won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.19 and was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.88.

SOFLO’s Derek Hau and Keegan Stack led Cooper City. Hau won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.77 and Stack won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.24. Both were members of the winning 200-yard medley relay along with SOFLO teammate Ethan McPeek.

Acosta, Gomez, Bendoym Lead SOFLO At BRST Not So Scary Halloween Invite

BOCA RATON, October 28, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club had a good showing Saturday at the BRST Not So Scary Halloween Invite Saturday at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

Several SOFLO swimmers turned in best times and added a few wins in the Goblins and Ghouls second session during the fun meet.

Ivy Acosta, 7, was a double winner and posted three best times. She won the 50-yard butterfly in 45.47 with a 7.85 time drop; 50-yard freestyle in 38.33 with a time drop of 5.48 and was second in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:39.87, with a time drop of 3.56.

Ollie Bendoym, 8, won the 50-yard breaststroke in 50.03, was second in the 50-yard butterfly in 47.65 and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 37.17.

Andres Gomez, 8, won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:42.65; was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 40.86, dropping 1.96 and was eighth in the 50-yard breastrtoke in 59.83.

Juan Aguinaga Vela, 13, had two 13-14 time drops including the 100-yard freestyle in 8.72 and 2.09 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

In the 8-and-unders, Gabriela Carrera had an impressive 27.98 drop in the 50-yard freestyle and 5.01 drop in the 25-yard backstroke. David Mendoza dropped 4.88 in the 50-yard breaststroke.

In the 9-10 age group, Cecillia Haugen had a 5.01 time drop in the 100 IM.

In the 11-12s, Lautaro Torcivia dropped 9.96 in the 50-yard breaststroke.

SOFLO’s age group development, dippers, little dippers and pre-team swimmers competed.

In addition to host Boca Raton Swim Team and SOFLO, eight other teams competed: Lake Lytal Lightning, PAQ, Pine Crest, Pompano Beach Piranhas, St. Andrew’s Aquatics, Swim Fort Lauderdale and Tsunami.

Florida Gators Sweep Georgia Bulldogs In SEC Opener

GAINESVILLE, October 27, 2023—University of Florida swept Georgia in its SEC opener Friday at the O’Connell Center.

The Gators made it look easy winning the women’s 183-117 and the men’s 175-125.

Olympian Bella Sims and Isabel Ivey were double winners for the women.

Sims won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.84 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.36 and led off the Gators’ two winning relays.

Ivey won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.59 and 50-yard freestyle in 22.85. She was on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. She was also second in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.15.

Other Gator women winners were Lainy Kruger, 200-yard butterfly, 1:58.49; Micayla Cronk, 100-yard freestyle, 49.30; Catherine Choate, 200-yard backstroke, 1:55.71; Olivia Peoples, 100-yard butterfly, 52.65 and Emma Weyant, 200-yard individual medley, 1:58.13.

University of Florida freshman and Pine Crest alum Julia Podkoscielny took home a pair of fourth places in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.88 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.47. She also swam leadoff on the seventh place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:47.18 with teammates Melissa Cowen, SOFLO’s Molly Golding and Alex Mitchell.

In the men’s competition, Josh Liendo was the Gators lone double winner. Liendo won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.30 and 100-yard butterfly in 46.30 and was a member of both winning relays.

Other Gator men winners were Julian Smith, 100-yard breaststroke, 53.74; Macguire McDuff, 100-yard freestyle, 43.56; Jonny Marshall, 200-yard backstroke, 1:44.38; and Aleksas Savickas, 200-yard breaststroke, 1:59.01.

The diving competition was held Thursday with the Gator sweeping both the men’s and women’s events. Camyla Monroy won the 1- and 3-meter women’s titles and Conor Gering won the men’s 1- and 3-meter titles.

SOFLO Ready To Race At BRST Not So Scary Halloween Invite On Saturday

BOCA RATON, October 27, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will get back to racing Saturday at the Boca Raton Swim Team’s Not So Scary Halloween Invite at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

SOFLO’s age group development, dippers, little dippers and pre-team will swim.

Two sessions are scheduled: Ghostly Session One for the 13-18 swimmers from 8:30 a.m. to 9:37 a.m.; and Goblins and Ghouls Session Two for the 12-and-unders 10:20 a.m. to 12:41 p.m.

In addition to host Boca Raton Swim Team and SOFLO, eight other teams competing are Lake Lytal Lightning, PAQ, Pine Crest, Pompano Beach Piranhas, St. Andrew’s Aquatics, Swim Fort Lauderdale and Tsunami.

Among SOFLO swimmers competing are Juan Aguinaga Vela, Matthew Hernandez, Natalia Perez, Ivy Acosta, Andres Gomez, Lautaro Torcivia, Daniella Diaz, David Mendoza, Annabelle Newman, Paul Nieves, Gabriela Carrera and Mackenzie Hines.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 11-3A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Catalasan, Colmenares, Vasquez, Vallmitjana-Behrendt Come Up Big

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 26, 2023—Defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas dominated the boys and girls fields to sweep the team titles at the District 11-3A Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday at Nova Southeastern University Aquatic Center.

With depth and talent, the Raiders swept all six relays and won every individual event but four, including six by South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers, to win team titles. The girls won with 603 points and boys won with 581. Archbishop McCarthy was girls and boys runners-up.

SOFLO’s Mariann Catalasan of St. Thomas Aquinas and Javier Colmenares of Everglades were double winners.

Catalasan, making her final district appearance as a senior, defended her district title in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.30 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.31, just edging Plantation’s Oneika Gayle (1:08.48) in an exciting girls’ race.

Colmenares was also a repeat winner in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.50 and 100-yard breaststroke in 59.42.

SOFLO’s individual winners were sophomore Sarah Vasquez of St. Thomas Aquinas defending her title in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:38.25 and St. Thomas Aquinas freshman Juan Vallmitjana-Behrendt in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.69.

In addition to Catalasan and Vasquez, other Raider girl winners were defending champion Julianne McCranie in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.66; defending champion Anastasia Lutz in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.42; and Carolyn Levy-Powell in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.52.

Other girl winners were defending champion Kaitlyn Jorgensen of Pembroke Pines Charter in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.00 and Chloe Cupid of Plantation in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.58.

In addition to Vallmitjana-Behrendt, the Raider boys won five other events.

Mateo Shearer was a double winner in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.89 and 100-yard backstroke in 55.55.

Gabriel Tortola was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.97 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.80.

Lev Konnikov won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.57.

In two unique races, three SOFLO boys swept the top three places in the 200 IM with Colmenares, Connor Jimenez of St. Thomas Aquinas and Abraham Penaloza of Pembroke Pines Charter in the breaststroke with Colmenares, Penaloza and Luca Hincapie of Pembroke Pines Charter.
