SOFLO Sharks Ready For FGC BB Championship South That Begins Friday

MIRAMAR, February 27, 2020—South Florida Aquatic Club heads the field for the FGC BB Championship South at Miramar Regional Park Aquatic Complex.

The short course yards meet, hosted by SOFLO, opens Friday with the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley events.

Host SOFLO will have 69 swimmers (36 girls and 33 boys) in 284 individual events.

SOFLO Sharks Finish Well On Final Day Of Broward BC Championships

SUNRISE, February 25, 2020–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers had an outstanding final day at the Broward County BC Championships Sunday at Sunrise Civic Center Pool.

The Sharks collected several top three finishes including five winners, and dropped times.

SOFLO’s Gaby Banks Wraps Up UANA Swimming Cup Appearance

LIMA, Peru, February 24, 2020–South Florida Aquatic Club’s Gaby Banks of Jamaica wrapped up her final day action at the Union Americana De Natacion (UANA) Swimming Cup Sunday at Videna Aquatic Complex in Lima, Peru.

Banks, 16, was eighth in the 15-17 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.54, off her entry time of 59.50. She was seeded tenth in the event.

Banks was also 13th in the 50-meter butterfly in 30.47.

Jamaica’s five-member women’s team finished tenth overall with 39 points. Mexico won the combined and women’s team titles and Argentina won the men’s team title.

On her first day of competition on Saturday, Banks’ highest finish was sixth in the 50-meter freestyle in 27.36, off her entry time of 26.65.

Banks was also 15th in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:10.01 and 17th in the 50-meter breaststroke in 37.87.

Banks had an impressive outing last year in the FINA World Junior Championships where she posted her 50-meter freestyle best time becoming the fifth-fastest Jamaican female of all time on the short-course circuit.

Banks is a year-to-year national age group representative and multi-medalist at Carifta and CCCAN.

UANA Swimming Cup is a biennial premier swimming event hosted by the Swimming Union of the Americas. UANA’s existence dates back to the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

UANA Swimming Cup is held in three age groups, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17, the same age categories as the Carifta and CCCAN Swimming Championships.

Royalty, Gonzalez Lead SOFLO On Day One Of Broward BC Championships

SUNRISE, February 24, 2020–Cherill Royalty and Felix Gonzalez were top finishers for South Florida Aquatic Club Sharks on Day One of the Broward County BC Championships at Sunrise Civic Center Pool.

Royalty, 8, won the 8-and-under 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 48.00 and 50-yard butterfly in 37.34, another best time. She was also second in the 50-yard backstroke in 44.19.

Felix Gonzalez, 13, won the 13-14 100-yard butterfly in a best time 1:04.16. He was also second in the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:08.03 and third in the 50-yard breaststroke in 36.04.

SOFLO’s B team won the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:03.22 with Alexandra Strong, Aleksander Chaussky, Ian Barrios and Anjana Andapally.

SOFLO’s Gaby Banks Finishes Sixth At UANA Swimming Cup

LIMA, Peru, February 22, 2020–South Florida Aquatic Club’s Gaby Banks of Jamaica finished her first three events Friday and Saturday at the Union Americana De Natacion (UANA) Swimming Cup at Videna Aquatic Complex in Lima, Peru.

Banks’ highest finish was sixth in the 15-17 50-meter freestyle in 27.36, off her entry time of 26.65.

Banks was also 15th in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:10.01 and 17th in the 50-meter breaststroke in 37.87.

Banks has two events remaining on Sunday, the third and final day. She will swim the 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly.

Banks is coming off an impressive outing last year in the FINA World Junior Championships where she posted her 50-meter freestyle best time becoming the fifth-fastest Jamaican female of all time on the short-course circuit.

Banks is a year-to-year national age group representative and multi-medalist at Carifta and CCCAN.

Banks is among a five-member all-female team from Jamaica. A field of 450 athletes from 25 countries are competing. It is the first international meet of the 2020 season.

Banks’ teammates are Brooke Hopkins, 14, Zaneta Alvaranga, 15, Kokolo Foster, 13, and Christanya Shirley, 12.

SOFLO’s four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, a member of the UANA Swimming Technical Committee, is in Lima also.

UANA Swimming Cup is a biennial premier swimming event hosted by the Swimming Union of the Americas. UANA’s existence dates back to the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

UANA Swimming Cup is held in three age groups, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17, the same age categories as the Carifta and CCCAN Swimming Championships. It is in long course meters and timed finals.

Jamaica is 17th among combined teams and 11th among women’s teams with 23 points.

Jordan Evans, Toma Petkov Triple Winners, Lead SOFLO Sharks At Sweetheart Sizzler

POMPANO BEACH, February 18, 2020—South Florida Aquatic Club had several outstanding swims at the recent Pompano Beach Piranhas Sweetheart Sizzler at Pompano Beach Aquatic Center.

Jordan Evans and Toma Petkov were SOFLO Sharks’ top finishers.

Evans, 8, won the 7-8 25-yard backstroke in 19.00, 25-yard freestyle in 17.55 and 25-yard breaststroke in 24.71. Evans anchored the winning 100-yard freestyle relay in 1:15.11 with teammates Christie Lumsden, Gabriela Ekht and Devy Otero. Evans was also second in the 25-yard butterfly.

Petkov, 7, was a triple winner. He won the 7-8 25-yard backstroke in 25.77, 25-yard breaststroke in 25.66 and 25-yard freestyle in 18.95. Petkov was also third in the 25-yard butterfly in 24.19.

Other top three SOFLO Sharks finishers were:

Christie Lumsden, 7, second in the 25-yard breaststroke in 22.84; third in the 25-yard butterfly, 23.46; third in the 25-yard backstroke, 24.56; third in the 25-yard freestyle in 18.70.

Olivia Dinehart Leads SOFLO At Senior Long Course Sectional Qualifier

February 12, 2020–Olivia Dinehart was the top finisher for South Florida Aquatic Club at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Long Course Sectional Qualifier Saturday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

Dinehart, 15, won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:16.26 and 200-meter breaststroke in 2:41.51. She was also third in the 400-meter individual medley in 5:19.84.

Four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson was second in the 50-meter butterfly in 28.72 behind Lake Lytal Lightning’s Anna Herbst in 28.65 and second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:43.06 behind Dinehart.

Juan Mora was SOFLO boys top finisher, fourth in the 50-meter butterfly in 26.60.

Other top three SOFLO finishers were:

Mallory Schleicher was third in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:33.62.

Molly Golding was third in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:19.15.

SOFLO had 42 swimmers (22 girls and 20 boys) compete in 196 individual events and one relay event in timed finals.

Alan Bertea Top SOFLO Finisher In Coral Springs Open Invitational

CORAL SPRINGS, February 10, 2020—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got in some good racing and had some nice time drops Saturday at the Coral Springs Open Invitational at Coral Springs Aquatic Center’s Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions.

Alan Bertea, 15, was SOFLO’s top finisher placing fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.77. Dario Martin, 15, of Olympus Swimming Club won the event in 2:09.82.

Other top SOFLO finishers were:

Izzy Wilson, 13, seventh in the 200-yard butterfly in a best time 2:25.05 and ninth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:25.28, also a best time.

Elise Dinehart, 11, was tenth in the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:50.96.

Adrian Hernandez, 14, was 11th in both the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:01.29 and 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 31.99.

Austin Nelson, 14, was 11th in the 200-yard butterfly in a best time 2:17.59.

On Saturday only, SOFLO Sharks had 41 boys and 34 girls racing in 275 individual events.

The long course meters meet was timed finals.

Italy Sweeps Top Five; Lares, Acevedo Top SOFLO Finishers Friday At Senior Long Course Sectional Qualifier

February 7, 2020–Two-time Italian Olympian and current world champion Gabriele Detti opened the Florida Gold Coast Senior Long Course Sectional Qualifier Friday with a win at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

Detti, 25, world champion in the 800-meter freestyle, won the event in 7:55.49, slower than his 7:45 seed time.

Italian swimmers swept the top five places. Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri, 25, was second in 8:02.14.

SOFLO’s top finishers were Sebastian Lares, 15, and Sarah Acevedo, 16. Lares was 13th in 9:07.43, bettering his previous time of 9:25.19, dropping 17.76 seconds. Acevedo was 26th in 9:51.87.

Lares and Acevedo are among 42 swimmers (22 girls and 20 boys) competing in 196 individual events and one relay event in timed finals.

Two sessions are scheduled for Saturday at 8:45 for the 400-meter individual medley, 10 a.m. for the 1,500-meter freestyle and 3:45 p.m. for the 400-meter freestyle, all timed finals.

SOFLO Swimmers Compete This Weekend In Coral Springs Open Invitational

CORAL SPRINGS, February 6, 2020—South Florida Aquatic Club will have 75 swimmers competing in this weekend’s Coral Springs Open Invitational at Coral Springs Aquatic Center’s Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions.

The long course meters meet will be timed finals.

SOFLO Sharks will have 41 boys and 34 girls racing in 275 individual events over three days.

Among SOFLO swimmers competing are: Sarah Bedoya, Kaitlyn Consuegra, Fiorella Di Salvo, Elise Dinehart, Hashan Ekanayake, Marvan Ekanayake, Shelby Evans, Jordan Evans, Ryan Harries, Mariana Pinto, Lucas Porven and Juan Vallmitjana.

In addition to SOFLO, some of the Florida Gold Coast teams in the field are Blue Marlins, City of Miami Parks, East Coast, Heritage Aquatics, Hialeah, Midtown Weston, Eagle Aquatics, Westminster Academy, TS Aquatics. Sunrise Swimming and host Coral Springs Swim Club.

The 500-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley events will open the meet on Friday.

How To Get There: If taking 1-95, take Copans Road exit and go west approx. 10 miles. Copans turns into Royal Palm Blvd., after crossing 441. The Aquatic Complex will be on the right hand side ½ mile after crossing Coral Ridge Drive. If taking Sawgrass Expressway, exit on Sample Road East.Continue East on Sample to first light, Coral Ridge Drive. Turn Right onto Coral Ridge, continue South to Royal Palm Blvd. Turn right onto Royal Palm. The Aquatic Complex will be on the right hand side (1/2 Mile).
