South Florida Aquatic Club Awarded USA Swimming National Club Excellence Silver Medal Second Year In A Row

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, November 24, 2020—For the second consecutive year, South Florida Aquatic Club, the largest and one of the most diverse clubs in the Florida Gold Coast, was awarded USA Swimming’s Silver Medal National Club Excellence Award for 2021.

Until last year, SOFLO had been a Bronze Medal club eight years (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), but had never earned a silver medal until last year.

SOFLO’s first year of existence was 2011 after starting out as the Comets. The club is currently celebrating its 20th year of existence.

The club excellence award program, now in its 21st year, is divided into gold, silver and bronze divisions. The rankings only include 18-and-under swimmers eliminating most pro and college swimmers.

The Top-20 clubs earn Gold level ranking and those rated 21-100 are designated as Silver honorees. The next 100 clubs are recognized at the Bronze level.

The rankings give points scores based on a power point rating system that gives swim points based on how fast it is relative to a swimmer’s age.

The focus of the USA Swimming voluntary program is to identify and reward up to 200 USA Swimming-sanctioned clubs that have attained a high level of athlete performance.

The program strives to meet the following initiatives:

Promote the development of strong, well-rounded age group and senior swimming programs that produce elite 18-and-under athletes.

Provide recognition and resources to motivate and assist member clubs to strive for the highest ideals of athlete performances.

SOFLO earned 4,296 rating points and is one of two Florida Gold Coast clubs (Eagle Aquatics is the other) and one of seven Florida teams (Sarasota Tsunami, Swim Florida, Gator Swim Club, Episcopal Amberjax and Bolles).

Among Bronze Medal Florida clubs are Pine Crest Swimming, St. Petersburg Aquatics, T2 Aquatics, Flood Aquatics Swim Team (FAST), Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club, St. Andrew’s Swimming and Tampa Bay Aquatic Club.

Only gold and silver level clubs are provided grant funding.

Nation’s Capital Swim Club of the Washington, D.C. area won its seventh consecutive Club Excellence title. Nation’s Capital totaled 71,900 finishing ahead of Gold level club SwimMAC Carolina (47,489) and Dynamo Swim Club (34,552). Only one Florida team made the Top 20, Sarasota Sharks with 26,120 points.

By Sharon Robb
BUDAPEST, Hungary, November 22, 2020–The Cali Condors dethroned defending champion Energy Standard to win the International Swimming League Championship Sunday at Duna Arena.

The Cali Condors, led by MVP Caeleb Dressel, won with 561.5 points. Energy Standard was second with 464.5 followed by London Roar with 391.0 and LA Current with 298.0. Last season the Cali Condors finished third behind Energy Standard and London Roar.

The Cali Condors are the first club in the league’s two-year history to finish a season undefeated.

On the final day, Dressel, 24, broke another world record, this time in the 100-meter individual medley in 49.28 for the second time this season. He took nearly a second off his old world record. Cali Condors teammate Marcin Cieslak was second in 51.17.

Dressel finished with 96 points for match MVP honors and 463.5 points as season MVP.

Brit Adam Peaty of London Roar broke his own world record in the 100-meter breaststroke in 55.41. His previous record was 55.49.

“It feels like every race is a world championship or an Olympic final, it’s incredible,” said London Roar general manager Rob Woodhouse. “Seeing all these world records is just amazing.”

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Alia Atkinson of London Roar finished with a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:03.56 behind Lilly King who broke the American record in 1:02.50. King is now third on the all-time list behind world record holders Ruta Meilutyte and Atkinson, both with times of 1:02.36.

King now holds the 50 and 100 breaststroke American record in both short course and long course.

In the women’s 50-meter breaststroke skins event, King won Round One in 28.96 and Atkinson was fourth in 29.58. In Round 2, King won in 29.22 and Atkinson was third in 29.68 and in Round 3, King won in 29.14 and Molly Hannis was second in 30.04. King finished as match MVP runner-up with 71 points Dressel. It was the fifth breaststroke skins win of the season for King.

In other notable races:

LA Current’s Beryl Gastaldello won the 100-meter freestyle in 51.38, just out-touching Energy Standard’s Siobhan Haughey, second in 51.40. Gastaldello also won the 100 individual medley in 57.30.

Dressel also won the 100-meter freestyle in an American record 45.08 ahead of Florent Manaudou of Energy Standard in 46.07. Later in the day, Dressel won the 50-meter butterfly in 22.09 ahead of Tom Shields in 22.32.

Cali Condors finished one-two in the 200-meter butterfly with Hali Flickinger first in 2:03.35 and Kelsi Worrell Dahlia in 2:05.39.

Chad le Clos of Energy Standard knocked off Tom Shields of LA Current in the 200-meter butterfly, 1:48.57-1:48.66. Shields broke his own American record of 1:49.02 and is the first American male swimmer to dip under 1:49.

Olivia Smoliga of Cali Condors won the 100-meter backstroke in an American record 55.04 ahead of Kira Toussaint of London Roar in 55.94.

Kliment Kolesnikov of Energy Standard won the 100-meter backstroke in 48.82 ahead of LA Current’s Ryan Murphy in 49.29. American Heritage alum Dylan Carter of LA Current was fourth in 49.91.

Siobhan Haughey of Energy Standard won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:51.11, just ahead of Freya Anderson of London Roar in 1:51.87 and Allison Schmitt of Cali Condors in 1:52.17. Haughey finished nine-for-nine in the 200 freestyle.

Brit Duncan Scott of Lond Roar won the 200-meter freestyle in a national record 1:40.25. Cali Condors’ Townley Haas was second in 1:40.49, breaking the oldest American record set by Ryan Lochte in 2010. Scott also won the 400 IM in 3:59.83.

Sarah Sjostrom of Energy Standard won the 50-meter butterfly in 24.73.

Energy Standard won the 4×100 mixed freestyle relay in 3:14.21 with Evgeny Rylov, Florent Manaudou, Sarah Sjostrom and Siobhan Haughey ahead of the Cali Condors in 3:14.72 with Caeleb Dressel, Justin Ress, Olivia Smoliga and Erika Brown.

Sydney Pickrem of London Roar won the 400-meter individual medley in 4:24.84 and Flickinger was second in 4:25.50.

In the men’s 50-meter breaststroke, Peaty won Round One in 25.41; Ilya Shymanovich won Round Two in 25.80 and Peaty came back to win the final round in 26.10.

The pro teams, featuring many of the top swimmers in the world, had raced in a protective bubble since October 16 with regular tests for coronavirus. There were no COVID-19 positive tests results during that time.

With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics moved to next year (July 23-August 8), and so many other competitions cancelled around the world because of the pandemic, the ISL gave more than 300 swimmers a focus and chance to get up and race while making a paycheck.

“It’s been such a fun time, this whole bubble,” said Dressel, a Clay High, Bolles Club and Florida alum. “This is the most fun I’ve ever had swimming in my life. To have that for six weeks is truly special.”

The ISL, created by Ukrainian billionaire Konstantin Grigorishin, who invested $25 million in the bubble setting with $11 million earmarked for swimmer stipends and prize money, gained more stature in his second year of existence. Grigorishin said the swimmers are taking the ISL seriously now. He hopes to break even in 2022.

“I think everyone kind of thought of it as an anomaly last year, like a new spring football league,” swimming broadcaster Rowdy Gaines said during an interview. “That’s not what it is. It’s not going away.”

Lack Of Resources Put Broward County Winter Sports Including Swimming On Hold

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, November 21, 2020–High school swimming and other winter sports at Broward County public schools have been put on hold.

Practices for all winter sports have been pushed back to Dec. 14 and the regular season will now start on Jan. 4 instead of the original Dec. 5 starting date.

Teams will be allowed to compete in holiday tournaments before Jan. 4 to enable them to keep their holiday tournament commitments. Winter sports practices had started this past week but are now on hold until the new Dec. 14 starting date.

Shawn Cerra, Director of Athletics and Student Activities for Broward County Public Schools’ BCAA made the announcement on Friday.

Cerra stressed that the winter season is not being postponed specifically because of the COVID-19 rising positive case numbers.

Cerra said the holding pattern is mainly because schools’ resources and personnel would be stretched too thin in addition to overlap issues for the sports. He said there were five fall sports still playing and now there will be five winter sports.

“It’s a numbers game,” Cerra told the media. “It really comes down to double the number of our athletes on campus, and then also the facilities side of it, trying to accommodate all those sports.”

The winter season will now likely include fewer meets. There were plans to hold six dual swim meets before a tri-county championship with Miami-Dade and Palm Beach in January/February at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

Miami-Dade public schools are staying with the Dec. 4 start date for winter sports competitions. Palm Beach County remains on schedule to begin winter sports on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7.

Dressel Breaks Two World Records In Forty Minutes; SOFLO’s Atkinson Swims Fastest Time Of Year At ISL Finals

By Sharon Robb
BUDAPEST, Hungary, November 21, 2020—The International Swimming League championship final lived up to expectations Saturday on opening day at Duna Arena.

The Cali Condors, led by Caeleb Dressel’s back-to-back short course would records within 40 minutes, are sitting pretty heading into Sunday’s second day of competition.

The Cali Condors lead defending ISL champion Energy Standard, 267-239.5 points. The London Roar is third with 199.5 and LA Current is fourth with 177.

With the London Roar unable to grab a skins choice in either event, they are technically out of the race for the title. LA Current also appears to not have enough to challenge on the final day.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Alia Atkinson turned in her fastest performance of the year in the 50-meter breaststroke in 28.88, swimming in Lane 7, to take the bronze. Lilly King of the Cali Condors won in 28.77 and teenager Benedetta Pilato of Energy Standard was second in 28.81. Her reaction time was 0.63 off the block, fastest among the field.

Atkinson, 31, a four-time Jamaican Olympian, has four of the fastest performances of all time in the 50 breaststroke short course meters event, including the top two (28.56 and 28.64).

An ISL meet record of four world records were shattered, including two by Dressel, a Clay High School and Bolles Club alum.

Dressel was in beast mode as he broke the 100-meter butterfly in 47.78 (he went out in 22.44 pushed by Tom Shields’ 22.38 split) and then lowered his own 50-meter freestyle in 20.16 with an 0.64 reaction time off the block. He also lowered his American record in the 100-meter freestyle in 45.18 on the 4×100 relay leadoff leg.

Energy Standard broke the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay in 3:25.37, but it will be recorded as a world best since all four relay members are from different countries.

Later in the meet the Cali Condors’ women’s 400-meter medley relay broke the world record (3:44.52) that will count since all four swimmers are Americans (Olivia Smoliga, Lilly King, Kelsi Worrell Dahlia and Erika Brown).

Energy Standard’s Kliment Kolesnikov set a world record in the 100-meter backstroke in 48.58, leadoff leg on the 400 medley relay.

King set an American record in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:15.56 and 50-meter breaststroke to become the second fastest all-time behind Atkinson.

In other events:
Beryl Gastaldello of LA Current won the 100-meter butterfy in 55.34 and handed Sarah Sjostrom of Energy Standard her first loss of the season, who finished second in 55.37. Sjostrom came back to win the 50 freestyle in 23.55.

Beata Nelson of Cali Condors led from start to finish to win the 200-meter backstroke in 2:00.27.

Evgeny Rylov of Energy Standard won the 200-meter backstroke in 1:46.37 ahead of Bolles alum Ryan Murphy of LA Current in 1:47.41.

Kirill Prigoda of London Roar won the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:01.71.

Andrew Seliskar of LA Current won the 200-meter individual medley in 1:51.53.

Sydney Pickrem of London Roar won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:04.00.

Ilya Shymanovich of Energy Standard won the 50-meter breaststroke in 25.48 out-touching Adam Peaty of London Roar in 25.50.

Olivia Smoliga of Cali Condors won the 50-meter backstroke in 25.83.

Ryan Murphy came back to win the 50-meter backstroke in 22.54. American Heritage alum and Trinidad and Tobago’s Dylan Carter of LA Current was seventh in 23.95.

Hali Flickinger of Cali Condors won the 400-meter freestyle in 3:58.77.

Tom Dean of London Roar won the 400-meter freestyle in 3:36.56.

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Ready For This Weekend’s ISL Championship Finals

By Sharon Robb
BUDAPEST, Hungary, November 19, 2020–South Florida Aquatic Club’s Alia Atkinson is more than ready to “battle and be better” for this weekend’s International Swimming League final at Duna Arena.

The four-time Jamaican Olympian will wind up her second pro season when she competes with the London Roar. The three other teams making it to the final are defending champion Energy Standard, Cali Condors and LA Current.

The Energy Standard leads in rating points with 2,291 followed by the Cali Condors, 2,222 and London Roar, 2,007.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Atkinson told Sports Max TV. “Right now, we’re third but we’re pretty close to second and first. I really think we can pull something out. I think we can surprise some people and just do our best.

“Six weeks is a long time. Everybody is excited to go home but as a team I think we’re focused and ready to go into the finals and produce the best times they can. I know we will give it 100 per cent effort.”

Clay High School and Bolles Club alum Caeleb Dressel of the Cali Condors is coming off last week’s world record performance in the 100-meter individual medley (49.88). In last year’s final, he broke the world record in the 50-meter freestyle in 20.24.

The London Roar’s Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands and Adam Peaty of Great Britain are also coming off world records. Toussaint, who swam for Florida Gulf Coast for two seasons before transferring to Tennessee for her final two seasons, broke the 50 backstroke mark in 25.60 and Peaty broke the 100 breaststroke in 55.49.

The pro season, held in a “bubble” under strict COVID-19 guidelines, started with 300 swimmers and 10 international teams. Competition was held over six weeks.

Atkinson, 31, is ranked first in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:02.66) and fourth in the 50-meter breaststroke (29.20). Atkinson has also lowered her Jamaican national record in the 100 butterfly twice (57.13 last weekend).

“The butterfly was fantastic, I wanted to go 56 but like the 100 breast you have to take it step by step,” Atkinson said. “I haven’t done that race in like six years, so considering that it is a pretty good time. Hopefully, as I swim it some more I will get faster and faster.”
