SOFLO’s Vank Triple Winner On Final Day Of Jesse Vassallo Invitational

May 23, 2016—Valerie Vank of South Florida Aquatic Club was the big winner on the final day of the Jesse Vassallo Invitational Sunday at the Pompano Beach Aquatic Center.

Vank, 10, finished with 27 points after winning the 50-meter backstroke in 38.30; 50-meter breaststroke in 41.30 and 100-meter freestyle in 1:14.05.

All three times were lifetime-bests.

Christian Tijero, 10, led the SOFLO boys with a win in the 50-meter backstroke in 38.83. He finished with 16 points in the meet. Juan Colmenares, 12, won the 11-12 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:11.56 and finished with 12 points.

Lucas Porven, 10, won the 200-meter butterfly in 3:17.79.

SOFLO had 57 swimmers entered in the meet. SOFLO Masters Shine At Coral Springs Last Chance Meet

May 23, 2016—South Florida Aquatic Club Masters Team had another good showing Saturday at the Coral Springs Short Course Yards Last Chance Meet.

SOFLO masters coach Carlos Morante collected three firsts and two seconds.

Morante, 23, led by example winning the 50-yard butterfly in 24.70, 50-yard backstroke in 26.31 and 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.07. He was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.13 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.17.

Julia Fermayer, 38, won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:41.65, took second in the 50-yard freestyle in 33.21 and 100-yard freestyle in 1:15.38 and third in the 50-yard breaststroke in 42.29 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:31.50.

After watching her youngest daughter Michelle Marinheiro, 13, compete in the Gulliver Prep Summer Invitational down south in Pinecrest, Edileide Marinheiro made it just in time to compete and win gold, silver and bronze medals.

Marinheiro, 47, won the 50-yard breaststroke in 38.56, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:27.95 and was second in the 50-yard butterfly in 36.48.

Marilde Martinez, 41, won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:29.90, was second in the 50-yard backstroke in 43.02 and third in the 50-yard breaststroke in 46.16.

Paula Berti, 46, took firsts in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:36.55, 50-yard butterfly in 42.98 and 50-yard backstroke in 43.44 and seconds in the 50-yard freestyle in 35.02 and 50-yard breaststroke in 47.28.

Terri Rivera, 56, was second in the 50-yard backstroke in 47.02.

Xavier Brown, 21, competing in his first swim meet in two years, took gold, silver and bronze medals.

“I am very proud of this awesome SOFLO masters swim team,” Brown said. “We are rocking.”

Brown won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.90, was second in the 50-yard butterfly in 25.82 and third in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.77.

SOFLO Finishes Gulliver Summer Invitational With Several Top Three Finishes

May 22, 2016—Ricardo Roche was top finisher for South Florida Aquatic Club on the final day of the Gulliver Long Course Summer Invitational Sunday at Gulliver Prep Aquatics Complex.

Roche, 16, was second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:20.04.

Samuel Quintero, 15, was third in the 100-meter backstroke in a best time 1:06.30.

Molly Golding, 13, was third in the 200-meter breaststroke in a best time 2:53.61, dropping 4.01 seconds off her previous best.

Kathleen Golding was third in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:32.68.

SOFLO Swimmers Medal On Final Night Of Validus Bermuda National Championships

May 22, 2016—Claire Donahue and Timothy Wynter led South Florida Aquatic Club’s medal haul on the fourth and final night of the Validus Bermuda National Long Course Championships Sunday at the National Aquatic Centre in Hamilton.

Donahue, 27, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist, won her signature event, the 100-meter butterfly in 59.93. She was the only swimmer in the field to crack one minute.

Timothy Wynter, 20, of Jamaica won the 100-meter backstroke in 57.42.

Kile Aukerman, 23, took a second in the 50-meter breaststroke in 29.90 and was third in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:25.99.

Alina Schulhofer, 21, of Austria was second in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:07.23.

Bermuda national record holder Lisa Blackburn, 44, was second in a 50-meter time trials in 26.92 and was third in the actual event in 26.89.

The meet was sanctioned by FINA, the sport’s international governing body, as one of the last few qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and also served as a final qualifier for the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships.

SOFLO’s Donahue, Wynter Win, Blackburn Swims Best Times At Validus Bermuda National Championships

May 21, 2016—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Claire Donahue was a double winner Saturday night at the Validus Bermuda National Long Course Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Hamilton.

The 2012 U.S. Olympic gold medalist won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:18.28 and 50-meter butterfly in 28.33.

Jamaican Timothy Wynter won the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:06.69.

Kile Aukerman was third in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:04.93.

Bermuda six-time long course national record holder Lisa Blackburn, 44, was third in the 100-meter freestyle in 58.52. She swam back-to-back best times in prelims (59.00) and finals. Her previous best was 1:00.12, a 1.60-second drop.

Blackburn was second in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:11.93, also a best time. Her seed time was 1:12.11. She holds the national record in the event in 1:11.27.

At 44, Blackburn is the oldest swimmer in the four-day meet that concludes on Sunday.

The meet has been sanctioned by FINA, the sport’s international governing body, as one of the last few qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and will also serve as a final qualifier for the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships.

SOFLO’s Samuel Quintero Shines At Gulliver Summer Invitational; Weather Cancels Afternoon Session

May 21, 2016—Against a strong field that featured international Olympians, collegiate swimmers and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers, Samuel Quintero of South Florida Aquatic Club won an individual title Saturday at the Gulliver Long Course Summer Invitational at Gulliver Prep Aquatics Complex.

Quintero, 15, won the grueling 400-meter individual medley in a lifetime-best 5:02.13. He dropped 3.99 seconds off his previous time of 5:06.12.

Quintero was second in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:13.83. He also turned in best times in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:11.86 and 50-meter freestyle in 28.27. He was tenth in the 1500-meter freestyle in 18:18.55 on Friday night.

In an exciting 400-meter individual medley, Kathleen Golding, 15, fine tuning for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials, was second in 5:00.69 just behind University of Florida-bound Kelly Fertel of Gulliver Swim Club in 5:00.63. Fertel is also training for the Trials.

Golding was also third in the 200-meter freestyle behind two top collegiate swimmers in 2:09.26 and third in the 50-meter freestyle in 27.48.

SOFLO teammate Jennifer Rodriguez was third in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:21.61.

The afternoon session was cancelled because of bad weather. The three-day meet concludes on Sunday with two sessions.

Vank, Tijero, Pereira Lead SOFLO At Jesse Vassallo Invitational; Weather Cancels Most Of Second Session

May 21, 2016—South Florida Aquatic Club had a good day Saturday at the weather-abbreviated Jesse Vassallo Invitational at the Pompano Beach Aquatic Center.

Valerie Vank, 10, won the 10-and-under 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:29.84.

Vank was also second in the 50-meter butterfly in 39.45 and second in the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 34.19.

Christian Tijero, 10, was a double winner in the boys competition. He won the 10-and-under 100-meter breaststroke in 1:24.80 and 50-meter butterfly in a best time 36.21. He led a top four SOFLO best time sweep and was joined by teammates Jacob Navarro, 37.28, Alessandro Pereira, 38.66, and Javier Colmenares, 40.45.

Tijero was also second in the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 33.49.

Alessandro Pereira, 9, won the 10-and-under 100-meter breaststroke in 1:32.94.

Other SOFLO finishers among the top four:

Kaitlyn Barrios was third in the 10-and-under 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:51.63.

Sarah Acevedo was third in the 11-12 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:25.65.

Leah Pando was fourth in the 10-and-under 100-meter backstroke in a best time 1:33.03.

Juan Colmenares was third in the 11-12 50-meter butterfly in a best time 31.93.

Jonathan Lozano was fourth in the 10-and-under 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:34.46.

Yannai Michael was third in the 11-12 100-meter backstroke in 1:22.51.

Jacob Navarro was third in a best time 1:39.97.

Weather played havoc with the second session of the meet. Officials were able to only get in the first event, the 200-meter freestyle, before the remainder of the session was cancelled. The two-day meet concludes on Sunday with two sessions.

SOFLO Swimmers Advance Into Three Finals At Validus Bermuda National Championships

May 20, 2016—South Florida Aquatic Club had three swimmers qualify for finals Friday night at the Validus Bermuda National Long Course Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Hamilton.

In the 50-meter backstroke prelims, Timothy Wynter, 20, was the top qualifier in 28.00 for Saturday night’s final.

In the mixed 100-meter backstroke qualifying time trial, Wynter was top finisher in 56.98, dropping 0.68 off his entry time of 57.66.

Olympic gold medalist Claire Donahue, 27, earned the No. 1 seed in the 50-meter butterfly in 27.71 for Saturday night’s finals.

Alina Schulhofer, 21, of Austria was third-fastest qualifier in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:06.75 behind Kayla Sanchez, 14, (2:05.20) and Octavia Lau, 14, (2:06.61) both of the Canadian National Youth Team. The 200 finals are Sunday.

Two other SOFLO ProFlo swimmers, led by Bermuda national record holder Lisa Blackburn, are also competing in the four-day meet. Blackburn, 44, one of the oldest swimmers in the meet is swimming the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley. American Kile Aukerman, 23, is swimming the 50, 100 and 200-meter breaststroke. Both race on Saturday.

In the highlight event of the night, Rafa Alfaro, 24, of El Salvador and Trojan Swim Club, won the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:28.26.

The meet has been sanctioned by FINA, the sport’s international governing body, as one of the last few qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and will also serve as a final qualifier for the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships.

Busy Weekend Ahead For SOFLO Swimmers At All Levels

May 20, 2016—From Masters and Olympic-caliber to age group timed finals, South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will compete in four meets over three days.

While several SOFLO ProFlo swimmers including Olympic gold medalist Claire Donahue are currently swimming in the Validus Bermuda National Championships in Hamilton Thursday through Sunday, SOFLO swimmers will also compete in the Coral Springs Last Chance Masters Meet, Gulliver Long Course Invitational and Jesse Vassallo 2016 Invitational.

“Another crazy weekend for SOFLO,” said SOFLO CEO and head coach Chris Anderson, head of the Florida Gold Coast Swimming’s biggest, busiest and most innovative USA Swimming club.

Fifty-three SOFLO swimmers will compete in 298 individual events at the Gulliver Long Course Invitational at Gulliver Prep Aquatics Center Friday through Sunday.

SOFLO’s Masters team will compete in the Coral Springs Short Course Yards Last Chance Masters Meet on Saturday at the Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Warm-up is 11 a.m. and the action gets under way at noon.

SOFLO masters coach and swimmer Carlos Morante will be joined by Xavier Brown, Paula Berti, Marilde Roman, Julia Fermayer, Terri Rivera and Edileide Marinheiro. Morante, Fermayer and Berti are each entered in five events.

The meet is open to all registered USMS swimmers ages 18 and older. Each swimmer is limited to five events plus relays.

Coral Springs Masters will host a social sponsored by Gold Coast Masters after the meet.

Bermuda Sharks, Canadian Youth Team Swimmers Dominate Day One Action At Validus Bermuda National Championships; SOFLO Swims Friday

May 19, 2016—Teenager Octavia Lau of the Canadian Youth Team won the 800-meter freestyle Thursday on the opening day of the Validus Bermuda National Long Course Championships at the National Aquatic Centre.

Lau won in a lifetime best 9:04.90, shaving 3.60 seconds off her previous best. Lau is entered in six other events over the next three days.

Canadian Youth Team has entered 12 members to compete against some of the top Caribbean swimmers.

Five South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers, led by Bermuda national record holder Lisa Blackburn, will begin competing on Friday.

The meet has been sanctioned by FINA, the sport’s international governing body, as one of the last few qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and will also serve as a final qualifier for the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships.

Blackburn, 44, one of the oldest swimmers in the meet, will be joined by 2012 U.S. Olympic relay gold medalist Claire Donahue, American Kile Aukerman, Alina Schulhofer of Austria and Timothy Wynter of Jamaica.

Swimmers from Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, Guam, Syria, Jamaica, Austria, Venezuela and U.S. are expected to compete. Nine swim clubs are entered.
