Pine Crest Sweeps District 11-1A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Quintero Takes Bronze, Swims Best Times

October 31, 2014—Pine Crest swept the girls and boys team titles at the District 11-1A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at the Nova Southeastern Aquatic Complex.

Pine Crest, with talent and depth, won with 580 points and was led by double winners Tyla Martin and Marta Ciesla, also members of two winning relays. Westminster Academy was runner-up with 356 and South Florida Heat was third with 307.

Martin won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.73 and 100-yard butterfly in 56.18.

Ciesla, coming off a training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.44 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.39.

Pine Crest swept all three girls relays. Three-time state champion Carolyn Chaney of Pine Crest won the 1-meter springboard title with 520.75 points.

University School’s Allison Kopas is taking up where her sister, Emily, a freshman at Michigan, left off. Kopas won two individual titles in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.58 and 100-yard backstroke in 59.16.

Pine Crest, with one of its youngest teams, captured the boys team title with 395 points in the balanced boys competition. University School was runner-up with 383 points followed by Sagemont with 256.

Pine Crest had no individual winners but plenty of depth with plenty of seconds and thirds.

University School won the boys 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay and two individual events (Patrick Groters in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.05 and Daniel Pereira in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.42).

Mateo Gonzalez of Sagemont and Anton Voronin of North Broward Prep were double winners.

Gonzalez won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.01 and 100-yard butterfly in 51.46. He also led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with a split of 47.82, the fastest split among his teammates Nicholas Vale, Fernando Alatorre and Juan Imposimato.

Voronin won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.06 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.34.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Samuel Quintero, a freshman at Sagemont, was a member of the third place 200-yard medley relay along with teammates Fernando Alatorre, Mateo Gonzalez and Juan Imposimato. Quintero’s breaststroke split was 31.72.

In his individual events, Quintero was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best 2:12.41, dropping 2.24 and ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.07, also a season-best dropping 5.59.

South Florida Aquatic Club Heads To Two Weekend Meets

October 31, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will compete in two meets this weekend in Pompano Beach and Miami.

On Saturday, SOFLO swimmers will compete in the annual Pompano Beach Piranhas Turkey Classic. The meet begins 9 a.m.

SOFLO is sending 26 up-and-coming athletes to the Pompano meet.

SOFLO’s Atkinson Adds Two Silvers On Final Day Of Tokyo FINA/MASTBANK World Cup

October 29, 2014—A day after upsetting world record holder Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania and nearly breaking a world short course record, Alia Atkinson had to settle for two silver medals on the final day of the FINA/MASTBANK World Cup Series Wednesday at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Centre.

Meilutyte came back to beat Atkinson in the 50-meter breaststroke, 29.36-29.66, second fastest time in the world behind Atkinson (29.12 in Dubai).

Atkinson also finished behind Hungarian Katinka Hosszu in the 100-meter individual medley, 57.74-59.47.

“She had a solid swim in the breaststroke,” said SOFLO coach Chris Anderson, who is coaching her in Japan.

“She had a very unlucky breaststroke start and could not recover from the bad start but had a nice recovery during the second 25. She had a very nice 100 IM and will work more underwaters next start.”

Atkinson, 25, a three-time Jamaican Olympian and South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer leaves Tokyo with one gold medal and two silver medals and $3,500 in prize money for the second consecutive meet.

Atkinson was coming off a two gold, one bronze medal and $3,500 performance on the opening leg in Beijing.

Atkinson remains fourth on the women’s money list with $50,000 behind series leader Hosszu ($228,000), Dutch swimmer Inge Dekker ($103,500) and Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia ($79,500).

Series leader Chad le Clos of South Africa leads the men’s money prize list with $136,000 after winning $4,500 in Tokyo. American Tom Shields is second ($78,250) and Hungarian Daniel Gyurta is third ($75,500).

In other final events:

Men’s 1500-meter freestyle: Hungarian Gergely Gyurta led from wire-to-wire to win in 14:36.38.

Women’s 400-meter individual medley: Hosszu won her first event of the night and fourth event of the competition in 4:23.67. She won the race by nearly three seconds.

Women’s 100-meter freestyle: Brit Fran Halsall won in 51.96, third fastest in the world this year.

Men’s 200-meter freestyle: Japan’s Kosuke Hagino won in 1:42.62.

Men’s 100-meter breaststroke: Hungarian Daniel Gyurta came from behind to win in 57.23, just 1/100th of a second ahead of Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki.

Men’s 100-meter butterfly: South African Chad le Clos won his first event of the night in 48.95.

Women’s 100-meter backstroke: Hosszu won her second race in 56.07.

Men’s 50-meter backstroke: Spain’s Miguel Ortiz out-touched American Eugene Godsoe, 23.30-23.36. to win.

Women’s 200-meter butterfly: Hosszu outlasted Belmonte to win by 69/100ths of a second in 2:03.14.

Men’s 200-meter individual medley: Japan’s Kousuke Hagino won her second race of the night in 1:51.27, breaking his own national and World Cup record.

Women’s 400-meter freestyle: Belmonte won the distance event in 4:00.87 just ahead of Japan’s Chihiro Igarashi in 4:00.89.

Men’s 50-meter freestyle: Japan’s Shinri Shioura out-touched Bolles alum George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago, 21.42-21.43.

Women’s 200-meter breaststroke: Rie Kanetou of Japan won in 2:19.18, fastest time in the world this year.

Women’s 100-meter individual medley: Hosszu won her sixth and final gold medal in 57.74.

Men’s 200-meter backstroke: Aussie Mitch Larkin and Japan’s Yuuki Shirai tied for the gold medal in 1:49.95. Shirai reeled Larkin with 50 meters to go.

Women’s 50-meter butterfly: Dekker outsprinter Halsall to win in 25.18.

Mixed 4×50-meter freestyle relay: Japan clubs swept the top three medal spots. Mikihouse won in 1:33.28.

The competition now moves to Singapore for the World Cup Series’ final stop on Nov. 1-2.

Swimmers are racing for $1,500 for first, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. There is also a $10,000 bonus offered for a world record performance swim. A prize purse of $300,000 in prize money will be awarded to the sixth highest ranked men and women swimmers.

After the Singapore leg, the men’s and women’s World Cup winners will earn $100,000, second place $50,000 and third place $30,000.

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Takes Gold, Breaks Own National Record On Day One Of FINA/MASTBANK World Cup In Tokyo

October 28, 2014—Alia Atkinson knocked off world record holder Ruta Meilutyte, just missing her world record by a half-second, on Day One of the FINA/MASTBANK World Cup Series Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan.

The three-time Jamaican Olympian and South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer won the 100-meter breaststroke in a lifetime-best short course time and Jamaican national record in 1:02.86.

It was also the first time Atkinson, now ranked No. 2 on the all-time short course list, had beaten the Lithuanian in any breaststroke event. She earned another $1,500 for the victory.

Meilutyte, coming off a layoff, is returning to heavy training and competition in preparation for the upcoming world championships.

Atkinson was joined by her longtime SOFLO coach Chris Anderson for the two-day Tokyo meet and final stop in Singapore.

“She swam well tonight but is still hungry to improve,” Anderson said. “I am looking forward to some fast breaststroke swimming in the next few days.”

Atkinson was coming off a two gold, one bronze medal and $3,500 performance on the opening leg in Beijing. She is zeroing in on the $30,000 third place spot on the leading points and money list.

Great Britain, which sent a contingent to Tokyo, had one national record broken. Fran Halsall broke the 50-meter backstroke record in 26.42, shaving .03 off the previous mark set in December by Lizzie Simmonds. Halsall now has six national short course records.

In other final events:

Women’s 800-meter freestyle: Spain’s Mireia Belmonte-Garcia won in 8:08.57 for her fourth win in the distance event over six stops. She outsprinted Hungarian Katinka Hosszu, who was second in 8:09.27. Florida alum Elizabeth Beisel took a bronze in 8:19.32 and $500 in 8:19.32.

Men’s 400-meter individual medley: Daiya Seto of Japan won his second consecutive World Cup race in the event against a good field in 3:59.91, the only swimmer to break the 4-minute mark.

Men’s 100-meter freestyle: Without Chad le Clos of South Africa in the field, the race was wide open and slow. Katsumi Nakamura of Japan won in 47.30, edging Russian Sergei Fesikov (47.31) and German Steffen Deibler (47.35).

Women’s 200-meter fresstyle: Hosszu won her first race of the night and 111th World Cup overall win, in 1:52.45. She has not lost a 200 race since last September.

Men’s 50-meter breaststroke: South African Roland Schoeman won in 26.02 edging Hungarian Daniel Gyurta (26.60). Bolles alum George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago was fourth in 26.85.

Women’s 100-meter butterfly: Inge Dekker of the Netherlands won in 56.11. Hosszu was second in 56.94.

Men’s 100-meter backstroke: American Eugene Godsoe won in 50.49 for his first World Cup win of the season.

Men’s 200-meter butterfly: South African Chad le Clos won in 1:49.20 ahead of Japan’s Daiya Seto (1:49.68).

Women’s 200-meter individual medley: Hosszu, who has already clinched the top money spot, won her second event of the night in 2:05.18. American Caitlin Leverenz was second in 2:06.15. Beisel was fifth in 2:08.55.

Men’s 400-meter freestyle: South African Myles Brown won in 3:37.96.

Women’s 50-meter freestyle: Brit Fran Halsall upset Inge Dekker to win in 23.80. Dekker was second in 23.89.

Men’s 200-meter breaststroke: Daniel Gyurta of Hungary won in 2:02.12.

Men’s 100-meter individual medley: Japan’s Kosuke Hagino won in 52.03. Bovell was fifth in 52.89.

Women’s 200-meter backstroke: If anyone thinks Iron Lady is running out of gas, guess again. Hosszu won her third event in 2:01.97, just a second off her national record. Beisel was sixth in 2:05.77.

Men’s 50-meter butterfly: Chad le Clos won his second event in 22.20 ahead of Roland Schoeman in 22.66.

Mixed 200-meter medley relay: Japan clubs swept the top four places with the winning time in 1:40.51.

The competition continues for one more day in Tokyo.

This is the sixth leg of the tour that started in Doha and Dubai in August. The final stop is Singapore (Nov. 1-2).

Swimmers are racing for $1,500 for first, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. There is also a $10,000 bonus offered for a world record performance swim.

The stakes are high with $300,000 in prize money offered to the sixth highest ranked men and women swimmers.

SOFLO’s Atkinson Takes Gold, Bronze On Day Two Of FINA/MASTBANK World Cup In Beijing

October 25, 2014—Three-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson of South Florida Aquatic Club added another gold and bronze to her medal haul Saturday at the FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup in Beijing, China.

Atkinson, 25, won the 50-meter breaststroke in 29.15, just 0.03 seconds off her season-best, and came from behind to finish third in the 100-meter individual medley in 59.05 and picked up $2,000. Her 50-meter breaststroke race was ranked the second best performance among women earning her 18 bonus points.

On Friday, Atkinson won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:04.11 and picked up 12 points and $1500 for the win.

Atkinson is fourth on the points and prize money list with 207 points and $46,500 in prize money earnings. She earned $3,500 in Beijing.

Atkinson will now head to Tokyo for the Oct. 28-29 where she will be joined by her longtime SOFLO coach Chris Anderson.

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu continues to take center stage on the World Cup Series. She has won $215,000 in prize money, picking up $11,000 in Beijing. South African Chad Le Clos leads the men’s prize money list with $131,500.

Hosszu, who won seven events at the Beijing stop, made more history by surpassing Slovakian Martina Moravcova for the most World Cup event wins of all-time. Moravcova attended SMU and trained in Fort Lauderdale with the now-defunct FLST.

Moravcova retired with 105 wins and two overall series titles. Hosszu, at age 25, now has 110 wins.

Aussie Mitch Larkin broke the national record in the 200-meter backstroke in 1:48.69, breaking the previous mark of 1:49.62 set in 2009. Larkin swam career-bests in all three backstroke events.

In other final events:

Men’s 1500-meter freestyle: Hungarian Gergley Gyurta, after finishing second in the 400-meter individual medley, won the distance event in 14:38.27.

Women’s 400-meter individual medley: Hosszu won her fifth gold medal of the meet in 4:25.66. Florida alum Elizabeth Beisel, making her World Cup debut, was fourth.

Women’s 100-meter freestyle: Inge Dekker of the Netherlands won in 52.72.

Men’s 200-meter freestyle: South African Myles Brown won in 1:44.12 just ahead of German Paul Biedermann in 1:44.48.

Men’s 100-meter breaststroke: Daniel Gyurta of Hungary won in 57.25.

Men’s 100-meter butterfly: German Steffan Deibler won in 49.96, the only swimmer to break 50 seconds.

Women’s 100-meter backstroke: Hosszu won her sixth medal in 56.73, winning by more than a second.

Men’s 50-meter backstroke: China’s Jiayu Xu won in 23.29 ahead of Aussie Mitch Larkin and American Eugene Godsoe.

Women’s 200-meter butterfly: China’s Li Shuang won in 2:04.34 to top an impressive field that included Hosszu who finished fourth.

Men’s 200-meter individual medley: In an all-Asian field, Daiya Seto of Japan won in 1:54.21.

Women’s 400-meter freestyle: Teenager Cao Yue of China won in 4:00.72 upsetting world record holder Mireia Belmonte of Spain who finished in 4:01.08.

Men’s 50-meter freestyle: South African Chad Le Clos won in 21.28. George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago finished out of the medal hunt placing fourth in 21.40.

Women’s 200-meter breaststroke: Aussie Sally Hunter led from start to finish to win in 2:19.26.

Women’s 100-meter individual medley: Hosszu won her seventh and final medal of the night in 58.11 ahead of China’s Shiwen Ye in 58.36.

Men’s 200-meter backstroke: Aussie Mitch Larkin won in 1:48.69.

Women’s 50-meter butterfly: Dutch swimmer Inge Dekker won in 24.97 and Hosszu was eighth in 27.51.

Men’s 4×50-meter freestyle relay: China won in 1:31.69 ahead of Russia in 1:41.66.

This is the fifth leg of the tour that started in Doha and Dubai in August. The final two stops are Tokyo, Japan (Oct. 28-29) and Singapore (Nov. 1-2).

The Beijing meet attracted 300 swimmers from 32 countries. Swimmers race for $1,500 for first, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. There is also a $10,000 bonus offered for a world record performance swim.

The stakes are high with $300,000 in prize money offered to the sixth highest ranked men and women swimmers. After the Singapore leg, the men’s and women’s World Cup winners will earn $100,000, second place $50,000 and third place $30,000.

SOFLO’s Colon, Perez, Travieso, Mesa Win District 12-3A Titles; Terra, Belen Win Team Titles

October 24, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers continued to dominate district competition Friday at the District 12-3A Swimming and Diving Championships in Miami.

Delanie Perez of Goleman was a double winner. She won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.74 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.95.

Vanessa Mesa of Mater Academy was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay along with SOFLO teammate Liz Travieso, winning in 2:01.75 and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay again with Travieso to win in 3:51.24.

Mesa was also second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.08 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.06.

Liz Travieso won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.86 and was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.47.

Jordon Colon of Mater Academy won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.68 and was second in the 100-yard breaststroke behind teammate Julio Horrego in 1:02.70.

Alfredo Mesa was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay and Colon led off to win in 3:20.79. Mesa and Colon were also members of the runner-up 200-yard medley relay.

Mesa was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.26 and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.15.

“SOFLO high school swimmers are kicking the high school state series off smart and strong and achieving best times and advancing into regions without tech suits,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said.

Terra Institute of Miami won the girls team title with 478 points. Mater Academy was runner-up with 443.

Miami Belen Jesuit defended its title with 455 points. Terra Institute was second in 382 and Mater Academy was third with 322.

SOFLO’s Atkinson Wins Gold, Bovell Takes Silver; Beisel Makes Debut On Day One Of FINA/MASTBANK World Cup In Beijing

October 24, 2014—Alia Atkinson is now trying to play catch-up at the FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup Friday in Beijing, China.

The three-time Jamaican Olympian of the South Florida Aquatic Club got off to a good start on Friday.

Atkinson, 25, won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:04.11 and picked up 12 points against a week women’s field. She attacked the first 50 in sub-30 in 29.98 and won the race by more than a second picking up $1500 for the win.

Atkinson is fourth overall in money earnings with $44,500. After not competing in Russia, Atkinson is 21 points behind (171 points) Spain’s Mireia Belmonte of Spain (189 points) and $72,000 in the overall series standings.

Bolles alum George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago took second in the 50-meter breaststroke in 26.91 behind Roland Schoeman in 26.87.

Bovell won his second silver medal of the night in the 100-meter individual medley in 52.43 and earned $1,000 per medal.

Local fans had something to cheer about after watching China’s Lu Ying and Xu Jiayu break national records in back-to-back races.

Lu Ying lowered her national record in the 100-meter butterfly in 55.95 after knocking off favorite Inge Dekker of the Netherlands. Lu is the first Chinese woman to go under 56 seconds.

Xu Jiayu broke the men’s national record in the 100-meter backstroke in 50.14, shaving 8/10ths off the previous mark set by Sun Xiaolei in 2011.

Most of the Chinese swimming in the meet competed in the Asian Games in late September and national championships in mid-October.

Women’s 800-meter freestyle: Hungarian Katinka Hosszu took up where she left off in the second cluster. She won the distant event in a national record and career-best 8:08.41. “Compared with training, I like competition better because it is easier and more relaxed than training,” she said.

Men’s 400-meter individual medley: Daiya Seto of Japan won by nearly five seconds in 4:04.84.

Men’s 100-meter freestyle: South African Chad le Clos had no problem winning in 46.81. He led from start to finish.

Women’s 200-meter freestyle: Hosszu picked up her second win of the day. Florida alum Elizabeth Beisel, making her World Cup finals debut, was seventh in 1:57.28. It was only her second short course meters event.

Women’s 50-meter backstroke: China went one-two with Fu Yuanhui winning in 26.43 and Qiu Yuhan in 26.64.

Men’s 200-meter butterfly: Le Close picked up his second victory in 1:49.73 including 28.9 in the last 50 meters.

Women’s 200-meter individual medley: Hosszu picked up her third gold medal of the night in 2:02.13. American Caitlin Leverenz took silver in 2:07.88.

Men’s 400-meter freestyle: China’s 2012 Olympic champion Sun Yang won in 3:37.10, the fastest time in the world this year. “It is my first Beijing World Cup meet, I am excited,” Sun said. “I am not in my best shape.”

Women’s 50-meter freestyle: Inge Dekker of the Netherlands won in 23.97.

Men’s 200-meter breaststroke: Hungarian Daniel Gyurta won easily in 2:03.40. He led from start to finish after 50 meters.

Men’s 100-meter individual medley: Russian Sergei Fesikov won with a season-best 52.30.

Women’s 200-meter backstroke: Hosszu won her fourth gold medal in 2:02.71, just edging Aussie Madison Wilson who finished in 2:02.81.

Men’s 50-meter butterfly: Le Clos won his third gold medal in 22.03, second fastest time in the world this year.

4×50-meter mixed medley relay: China won in 1:40.10 followed by Russia and Japan.

This is the fifth leg of the tour that started in Doha and Dubai in August. The final stops are Beijing, Tokyo, Japan (Oct. 28-29) and Singapore (Nov. 1-2).

The Beijing meet has attracted 300 swimmers from 32 countries. Swimmers are racing for $1,500 for first, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. There is also a $10,000 bonus offered for a world record performance swim.

The stakes are high with $300,000 in prize money offered to the sixth highest ranked men and women swimmers. After the Singapore leg, the men’s and women’s World Cup winners will earn $100,000, second place $50,000 and third place $30,000.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 9-4A Team Titles

October 23, 2014—St. Thomas Aquinas dominated the District 9-4A Swimming and Diving Championships to sweep the boys and girls team titles Thursday at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

St. Thomas girls swept all three relays and won four individual titles to win with 553 points, nearly 300 points ahead of host Douglas.

Sarah Asseraf won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.99 and was a member of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Vanessa Comunale won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.32 followed by her sister Isabella Comunale in 5:37.92.

Caitlin Ahern won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.73 and was a member of all three winning relays.

Karlee Price won the girls 1-meter springboard title with 510.30 points.

Lydia Musleh of Coral Gables was the only girls double winner, capturing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.84 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.35.

The most exciting girls race was the 100-yard butterfly where 69/100ths of a second separated the top three places. Meagan Abad of South Plantation won in 1:00.12 followed by St. Thomas swimmers Quinn Connor in 1:00.51 and Asseraf in 1:00.81.

The St. Thomas boys team was just as dominant. The Raiders, led by double winners Padraic Cassidy and Gabriel Perez Silva and two relay victories, won with 552 points. Douglas was runner-up with 396 points.

Cassidy won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.81 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.55 and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Perez Silva won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.51 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.19.

St. Thomas only other individual champion was Esteban Velasquez in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.75. He also led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Logan Downey of South Plantation won the boys diving title with 581.05 points.

FINA/MASTBANK World Cup Resumes Friday In Beijing With SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson

October 23, 2014—The FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup resumes Friday in Beijing, China with a star-studded field including three-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson of South Florida Aquatic Club.

It is the fifth leg of the tour that started in Doha and Dubai in August. After a weak second cluster in Hong Kong and Moscow, the competition is expected to heat up in Beijing, Tokyo, Japan (Oct. 28-29) and Singapore (Nov. 1-2).

Atkinson, 25, will be focusing on the 100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, 50 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 100 individual medley, according to her longtime SOFLO and Jamaican national team coach Chris Anderson.

Atkinson may also compete in the 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly depending on the field.

The meet has attracted 300 swimmers from 32 countries. Six world and 10 World Cup records have been broken during this year’s series.

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu is the clearcut favorite to win her third World Cup title with 643 points. Inge Dekker of the Netherlands is second with 252 and Spain’s Mireia Belmonte is third with 180 points.

The men’s leader is Chad Le Clos of South Africa with 282 points followed by American Tom Shields with 225 points and Hungarian Daniel Gyurta with 200 points.

Australia is sending a large contingent of ten swimmers to the final three meets, including six to the opener, in preparation of the Nov. 5-9 Australian Short Course Championships.

China’s Olympic champions Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen have also entered the field for the first time along with Germany’s world record holder Paul Biedermann.

ELSEWHERE

American long distance and open water swimmer Fran Crippen is being remembered on Thursday, four years after his life was tragically cut short during a FINA 10K open water swim on Oct. 23 ioff the United Arab Emirates.

The national team swimmer was 26.

Of all the tributes, USA Swimming’s Jack Roach said it best:

“Fran Crippen is a hero by every definition of the word. His love for life transcended the passions and depths he plunged into the sport of open water swimming with. Fran’s infectious smile and curiosity for others lives in his spirit that I am blessed to summon on runs loaded with excitement and a calmness through meditation that is silent in private thought. He is loved and missed by so many. Fran Crippen I salute you for your friendship and the way you lived your life.”…..

Brazilians Ana Marcela Cunha, who trained in South Florida, and Allan do Carmo won the overall women’s and men’s titles as the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup wrapped up its series in Hong Kong. Cunha finished with 148 points to win her third World Cup title. Carmo finished with 121 points.
