Jorgensen, Penaloza, Hincapie Double Winners; Rodriguez Wins PPC Coaching Debut In BCAA Season Opener

PEMBROKE PINES, September 1, 2023—Pembroke Pines Charter boys and girls swim teams won their season opener Thursday night at Academic Village Pool.

In girls’ action, Pembroke Pines Charter defeated Coral Springs, 227-56 and picked up a forfeit win from McArthur, 228-0. Coral Springs also picked up an 86-0 win from McArthur.

Pembroke Pines Charter boys also posted shutout wins over McArthur (235-0) and Coral Springs (235-0) with forfeit wins because of lack of swimmers.

South Florida Aquatic Club senior and age group program coach Jessica Rodriguez won her high school coaching debut with Pembroke Pines Charter.

Senior Kaitlyn Jorgensen won two events in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.90 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:38.59.

Junior Abraham Penaloza was also a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.47 and 100-yard butterfly in 59.03, the only swimmer to dip under 1 minute.

Senior Luca Hincapie won two events in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:32.84 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.53.

Pembroke Pines Charter next hosts Cardinal Gibbons, Ely and Nova at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Bolles, Pine Crest Tune Up For Saturday’s 58th Woodson Invitational

FORT LAUDERDALE, September 23, 2022—In a dress rehearsal for Saturday’s 58th Woodson Invitational, defending state champion Jacksonville Bolles swept Pine Crest in a dual meet on Friday at the Panthers pool.

Bolles, with one of its most talented teams in school history, dominated the meet with the girls defeating Pine Crest, 116-67, and the boys winning, 135-48.

Pine Crest’s one-two punch of Julia Podkoscielny and Riley Botting were double winners.

Podkoscielny, a University of Florida commit, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.30 and 100-yard backstroke in 57.27.

Botting won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.02 and 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.54.

Colin Nealy of Pine Crest won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.51. He was the only Panther boy swimmer to win an event.

Pine Crest swept the 1-meter diving with Ava Anderson winning the girls with 243.22 points and Allen Levitis the boys with 263.70.

Cooper City, Somerset Split In Tri-Meet; SOFLO Swimmers Come Up Big

COOPER CITY, September 20, 2022—Somerset girls and Cooper City boys won Monday night during a tri-meet at the Cowboys’ pool.

Somerset girls, led by SOFLO swimmers Kaylee Del Rio, Sofia Osorio and Sabrina Osorio, defeated Cooper City, 91-81.

In other girls’ matchups, Cooper City defeated Flanagan, 81-7, and Somerset downed Flanagan, 91-7.

Cooper City Cowboys, led by SOFLO’s Chris Hau, Derek Hau and Ethan McPeek, topped Somerset, 107-70, in the boys meet.

Somerset was led by SOFLO swimmers Aldo Zepeda, Felix Gonzalez, Enrique Rodriguez and Giorgio Rusconi.

In other boys matchups, Somerset defeated Flanagan, 102-44, and Cooper City topped Flanagan, 153-20.

Cooper City was led by girls’ double winner Georgina Henriquez in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.

Several South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers played key roles in their teams’ victories.

SOFLO’s Ava Kuznik anchored the Cowboys winning 200-yard freestyle. Alexandra Strong anchored the Cowboys winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

SOFLO’s Sabrina Osorio of Somerset won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15 and was second in the 200 IM in 2:27. Kaylee Del Rio won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:04. Sofia Osorio was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

The boys’ competition looked more like a SOFLO dual meet.

SOFLO’s Aldo Zepeda, Felix Gonzalez, Enrique Rodriguez and Giorgio Rusconi won events for Somerset.

Zepeda was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.56 and 100-yard freestyle in 53.13

Gonzalez, also a double winner, won the 200 IM in 2:06.25 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.19. Rodriguez won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.90.

Zepeda, Gonzalez and Rodriguez were members of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

SOFLO teammate Derek Hau of Cooper City won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.78. Chris Hau, Derek Hau and Ethan McPeek were members of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. McPeek was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay.

Archbishop McCarthy Splits With Key West; SOFLO’s Garrick, Harries, Gomez, Jimenez Brothers Come Up Big

KEY WEST, September 11, 2022–Archbishop McCarthy girls won and boys team lost a close one to Key West in a dual meet on Saturday.

The Mavericks girls team, behind double winners Calista Harries, Johanni Rodriguez-Cedeno and Tamalia Blanchard, won 106-64.

Harries won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.30 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:17.79. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay and anchored the winning 200-yard freestyle relay.

Rodriguez-Cedeno won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.89 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.19 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Blanchard won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.48 and 500-yard freestyle in 6:19.71 and was on the winning 200-yard medley relay.

The Mavericks’ boys team, led by double winner and team captain Nathaniel Garrick, dropped a 92-78 decision to Key West.

Garrick won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.65 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.38. He also led off the winning 200-yard medley relay and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Mason Jimenez won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.75 and was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.99. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and led off the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Pablo Gomez was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:28.10 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.53. He led off the third place 200-yard freestyle relay and anchored the fourth place 400-yard freestyle relay.

Matthew Jimenez was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 3:21.86 and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:06.95. He anchored the fourth place 200-yard medley relay and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Archbishop McCarthy will next swim American Heritage on Wednesday and travel to Catholic States in Orlando on Saturday.

South Florida Heat Sweeps Team Titles At Florida Christian Schools Championship; SOFLO’s Izzy Wilson Finishes Top Three

FORT LAUDERDALE, September 10, 2022—South Florida Heat dominated the annual Florida Christian Schools Championship Saturday at host Westminster Academy.

South Florida Heat swept the team titles, winning the girls’ team title with 529 points and boys’ team title with 450 points. Carrollton was girls’ runner-up with 317 points and Jupiter Christian was boys’ runner-up with 270 points.

South Florida Home Education Athletic Team (HEAT), established in 2004, is a Christian-based FHSAA accredited, not-for-profit organization working with home schooling families.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Izzy Wilson had two top three finishes. She was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.12 and third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.70.

Samantha Schoenborn of South Florida Heat and Alexandra Stern of St. Edwards were double winners.

Schoenborn won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.24 and 100-yard backstroke in 59.88.

Stern won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.50 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.73.

South Florida Heat won all six girls and boys relays.

Finn Winkler of South Florida Heat was the only boys’ double winner. He won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.53 and 100-yard backstroke in 54.16.

Nikita Efimov of South Florida Heat won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.33.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Cypress Bay In BCAA Season-Opener; SOFLO’s Ana Villamil, Stephen Kim Double Winners

PLANTATION, August 31, 2022—St. Thomas Aquinas girls and boys teams won their BCAA season-opener Tuesday night at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The Raiders swept the Cypress Bay Lightning. The boys won, 117-53 and the girls squeaked by, 89-87.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Ana Villamil was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.91) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.50).

The Raiders had three other girls double winners.

Mariana Cote won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.02 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:22.28.

Ana Lutz won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.32 and 100-yard freestyle in 56.01.

Julianne McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.22 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.35.

Cypress Bay won the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.
