Jacksonville Bolles Sweeps State 1A Team Titles Again; Record Breakers Winkler, Pelaez Steal The Show; Izzy Wilson, Austin Nelson Top SOFLO Finishers

By SHARON ROBB
OCALA, November 5, 2023—Jacksonville Bolles continued its unmatched winning streaks by sweeping the boys and girls team titles at the the State 1A Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday night at Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training Center.

Bolles won the girls team title with 469 points followed by runner-up South Florida Heat with 251 and boys team title with 628 points followed by St. Andrew’s with 157.

Bolles has won every boys state championship since 1988 and every girls title since 1991, and with decades of tradition on the line, Bolles kept the streak going. Bolles has now won a record 36 boys titles and 33 girls titles to continue as the state’s all-time high school swimming dynasty.

But it was South Florida Heat’s Kaii Winkler and Erika Pelaez, both North Carolina State commits, who stole a little of Bolles’ thunder.

Five months after fracturing his left wrist and right elbow in June when he was hit by a car, Kaii Winkler, 17, went out with a bang breaking two national and state high school records in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle in his final state meet appearance.

Winkler broke the national high school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a personal-best 1:32.68, lowering Cal freshman Aaron Shackell‘s previous mark of 1:32.85 set in February. Winkler then won the 100-yard butterfly in 46.33 and went 19.59 leading off the 200-yard freestyle relay, which placed second.

His second national high school record came on the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay with his leadoff split of 42.14, 2/10ths faster than the 42.34 that David Nolan set in 2011. Winkler also knocked 4/10ths off his previous state record (42.52) from last season.

“I put in a lot of work getting back into shape,” Winkler told reporters after the meet. “I kind of had a rough time with my mindset, but you’ve got to move forward and always just look toward better things.”

Senior Erika Pelaez shared the spotlight with four state records of her own. Pelaez’s 21.98 in the 50-yard freestyle and 51.29 in the 100-yard backstroke both set state records and gave her state titles in each event. Her leadoff split of 47.78 on the 400-yard freestyle relay was another state record. The relay went on to knock off Bolles (3:20.26) in another state record time of 3:19.39.

“It was awesome to be able to get best times,” Pelaez said. “This season’s been pretty long. I wasn’t completely tapered for this. And it was awesome, best way to end senior year.”

Bolles boys swept all three relays and won every individual event except for three. There was more parity in the girls results with seven individual events not won by Bolles.

Pine Crest’s surprising boys team was fourth with 128 points and girls were seventh with 105. The boys had four divers finish in the top six including state champion Allen Levitis. The junior finished with 529.95 points. He clinched the win on his final dive (2.5 somersault tuck) for a score of 69.75.

St. Andrew’s senior Diego Balbi, who committed to University of Southern California and represents Peru internationally, wrapped up his final state meet with a pair of silver medals and three lifetime-best times. He was runner-up in the butterfly (47.09) and backstroke (48.67) and led off the third place 400 freestyle relay with a best time 45.31. He also split 21.21 on the butterfly leg of the second place medley relay.

Scots teammate and University of Virginia commit Aspen Gersper won a state title in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.05, an automatic All-American time, and was second in the 50 freestyle in 22.73. She was a member of the third place finishing 200-yard and 400-yard free relays.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Izzy Wilson of Carrollton was top finisher for SOFLO placing tenth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.06. SOFLO’s Austin Nelson had a pair of 11th place finishes in the 500 freestyle in 4:41.54 and 100 backstroke in 53.04. Jaden Amores of Cutler Bay was 13th in the 200 IM in 1:56.97.

Cutler Bay was eighth in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.26 with SOFLO swimmers Jaden Amores, Nicolai Ross and Austin Nelson. Cutler Bay was also 11th in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:14.65 again with SOFLO’s Ross, Amores and Nelson.

In the girls competition, SOFLO’s Lydia Smutny of Cutler Bay was 14th in the 100 butterfly in 58.73; Katelyn Gembicki of Cutler Bay was 15th in the 50 freestyle in 24.70 and 16th in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.58; Jenesys Amores of Cutler Bay was 15th in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.40 and 16th in the 500 freestyle in 5:09.75; and Cutler Bay was 14th in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.53 with SOFLO teammates Jenesys Amores, Lydia Smutny, Amanda Grubbs and Katelyn Gembicki.
