Doral Academy, Pembroke Pines Charter Finish Among Top Five Boys Teams At FHSAA State 3A Meet

By Sharon Robb

STUART, November 11, 2017—Doral Academy and Pembroke Pines Charter, coached by two South Florida Aquatic Club age group coaches, finished among the top five boys teams Saturday night at the FHSAA State 3A Swimming and Diving Championships.

On a rainy and windy night at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center, Doral Academy Firebirds finished runner-up with 157 points behind state champion Tallahassee Chiles with 320.

It was Chiles second straight title. Chiles returned depth and talent and did not miss any time out of the pool because of Hurricane Irma.

Pembroke Pines Charter’s boys team was fourth with 135 points, the program’s highest finish in school history.

The Doral Firebirds, buoyed by depth, took a first, second and third in the boys relays.

Doral won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:08.83 with Adrian Aguilar, Nestor Montero, Vittorio Parravano and Aaron Rodriguez.

Doral was second behind Chiles in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:26.74 with Rodriguez, Parravano, David Montana and Aguilar.

The Firebirds opened the meet with a third place in the 200-yard medley relay behind Chiles and Naples in 1:36.76 with Montero, Santiago Gomez, Aguilar and Rodriguez.

Aguilar also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.10 behind Chiles’ Ryland Sun in 48.55.

Pembroke Pines Charter was led by Andres Lares, third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:31.18 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.17. It was his best finish at a state meet.

Pembroke Pines Charter’s 400-yard freestyle relay was fifth in 3:14.16 with Ricardo Roche, Sebastian Sevilla, Rafael Rodriguez and Lares. The Jaguars were also sixth in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.28 with Lares, Roche, Rodriguez and Casey Moya.

Cooper City’s Kathleen Golding Three-Peats, Wins State Title At FHSAA State 4A Meet

By Sharon Robb

STUART, November 10, 2017—-In front of a packed house at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center on an electrifying Friday night, Kathleen Golding won another state title at the FHSAA State 4A Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Cooper City junior defended her title in the 200-yard individual medley in an automatic All-American time of 1:59.72, the only swimmer to crack 2 minutes in the field. It was her third consecutive state title in the challenging event.

“I had confidence since I had won it twice before,” Golding said. “I’m glad I did well and had a better time that was under two minutes.”

Golding was the only girl or boy swimmer from Broward County to capture a state title. She was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in a close race with Micayla Cronk of Flagler Palm Coast, 49.58-49.79. It was the first time she swam the 100 freestyle at state. In the past two state meets, her second event was the 100 butterfly.

Golding was a member of the Cowboys’ seventh place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:49.11 with teammates Solana Capalbo, Molly Golding and Barbara Bernal. She also anchored the tenth place 200-yard freestyle relay.

Bolles Sweeps FHSAA State 1A Titles, Makes History; Quintero Swims Best Times

By Sharon Robb

STUART, November 8, 2017—Jacksonville Bolles made a little more history Saturday night at the FHSAA State 1A Swimming and Diving Championships at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Center.

Bolles won a national record 30th consecutive boys team title surpassing the national record of 29 held by Punahou of Hawaii (from 1958 to 1986). The girls won their 27th state title without winning an event.

Bolles boys won by more than 100 points with 350. The girls won with 333.5 points. Pine Crest was the top Broward finisher, placing second among girls with 288 and fourth among boys teams with 187 points.

Trinity Prep also made history. Trinity Prep became the first 1A team other than Bolles to win both the boys 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Bolles had won the 400 relay 29 years in a row. Trinity Prep edged Bolles, 3:03.03-3:04.10. It was also only the third time since 1990 Bolles did not win the 200 relay.

“It was huge, very historic,” Trinity Prep coach Rocco Aceto told the Orlando Sentinel. “My phone lit up like a Christmas tree with coaches calling from all over the country.”

Ariel Spektor led Bolles with two individual wins in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:47.25 and 100-yard butterfly in 48.20. He also led the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Despite Bolles dominance among teams, there were several outstanding swims by Broward County athletes.

Westminster Academy senior Jessica Nava defended her 100-yard butterfly title with a state record performance in 53.39, an automatic All-American time. She broke her own record of 53.46 set last year. She also won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.10.

Pine Crest sophomore Andrea Santander won the 200-yard freestyle in an automatic All-American time of 1:47.02. She was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.99.

Pine Crest won the 400-yard freestyle relay in an automatic All-American time of 3:27.85 with Santander, Annabella Lyn, Marissa Brannan and Alexandra Meszaros.

NSU University School senior Patrick Groters ended his high school career in style winning the 100-yard backstroke in 50.23. He was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.02. Longtime teammate Daniel Jacobs, also a senior, was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:28.38 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.37.

Pine Crest senior Nico Ferrara was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 45.60 and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.91.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Sam Quintero, at age 12 one of the youngest swimmers in the field, swam lifetime-bests in two events for Sagemont. Quintero was 14th in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.24. He was also 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.96. He also swam the breatstroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay that finished 12th in 1:42.32 with teammates Luis Villanueva, Samuel Cesin-Salazar and Cameron Brown.

Julia Podkoscielny of Pine Crest made her state meet debut and finished 24th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.76 and 22nd in the 100-yard backstroke in a lifetime-best time 1:00.79. The seventh grader was the only middle schooler in the girls’ field.

Broward County swept the 1-meter diving titles. Sophomore Maia Goldstein of NSU University School won her second girls title with 486.45 points.

Pine Crest eighth grader Kevin Mendez, who overcame a broken toe this season, defended his title in the boys competition with 537 points.
