January 26, 2022—-Nova Southeastern University won the combined and women’s team titles in a college meet against Florida Southern.

NSU defeated FSC, 293-232 in combined and 173-89 in the women’s competition. FSC’s men’s team won 143-120.

Celina Marquez, 22, a 2020 Olympian for El Salvador, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.56 and 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.87.

Flower, 22, of the United Kingdom, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.75 and 100-yard freestyle in 45.56.

In other NSU news:

Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming teams were selected by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a Scholar All-American team. The Sharks men and women posted GPAs of 3.33 and 3.45 to earn the honor.

NSU head coach Ben Hewitt said, “This is an awesome job by our Sharks in the classroom this past semester. They have clearly dedicated themselves to pursuing excellence and their work continues to pay off. I’m proud of our team and the tradition we’ve set in our studies.”

Thirty-nine student-athletes finished the fall semester with grade-point averages over 3.0. For the NSU men’s swimming team, along with posting the highest team GPA in program history, three student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs, while six were named to the Director’s List (GPA 3.80 or above), and 14 ended the semester with a 3.25 or higher.

On the women’s side, three held 4.0 GPAs, seven were named to the Director’s List and 17 student-athletes finished the semester with a 3.25 or higher.

SOFLO Swimmers Ready To Go The Distance At Mile By Moonlight

BOCA RATON, January 26, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club will get in a little distance racing Friday night at the Boca Raton Swim Team Mile by Moonlight.

The 1,650-yard freestyle event begins 5 p.m. at the Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center. The event is mixed gender all ages.

SOFLO’s Ivan Grass, 16, is the top seed in the mixed 1,650 in 16:25.39 and one of 15 SOFLO swimmers entered.

Florida Sweeps Auburn In SEC Dual Meet, Kathleen Golding Wins 200 IM


GAINESVILLE, January 24, 2022— University of Florida men’s and women’s teams swept the Auburn Tigers Saturday in a dual meet at the O’Connell Center.

The men’s team won 201-99 and women’s team won 184-116 in the Gators’ final home meet of the season. Florida won 23 out of 32 events and had 13 athletes gain B-cuts.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Kathleen Golding, a junior, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.28. She was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.77 and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.23.

Senior and two-time Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:46.25. Gulliver Prep alum Miguel Cancel was sixth.

Olympian Kieran Smith won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:18.16.

The Gators swept the men’s 100 butterfly. Eric Friese was first in 47.56; Isaac Davis second in 47.99 and Jace Crawford third in 48.01.

Newcomer Alberto Mestre took his first win as a Gator in the 100 freestyle in 44.38. Mestre was third in the 50 freestyle.

“We had a good meet today against Auburn,” Florida coach Anthony Nesty said. “We are thankful for Auburn making the trip to compete with us. We are three weeks from Conference and we still have quite a bit of work to do. We will continue to press forward toward our goals and try our best to remain healthy in the process.

“Today was a special day as we celebrated Senior Day. It was a very emotional time for our seniors especially since it was their last home meet.

“The entire team certainly has demonstrated tremendous resilience over the past couple of years and I am extremely proud of each one them.”

The Gators head to Auburn, Ala. for the Auburn Last Chance Invitational on February 4-6 for their last meet before the SEC Championships on February 15-19.

SOFLO Wins Combined Team Title; Juan Vallmitjana Wins Five Events On Final Day Of TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 24, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club won the combined, girls and boys team titles Sunday at the TYR South Florida Aquatic Club Open at Academic Village.

SOFLO won the combined team title with a club record 3,869.50 points. Ransom Everglades was second with 1,159.50.

SOFLO won the girls team title with 1,936 points and boys team title with 1,933 points.

SOFLO swimmers earned three of the four boys’ high points awards. They were Guillermo Mantilla, Juan Vallmitjana and Jaden Amores. The girls earned one high point award with Olivia Dinehart.

The girls’ competition opened with an exciting 200-yard freestyle relay race where Ransom Everglades (Emma Larralde, Bianca Montalvo, Katya Linfield, Athena Dyer) just edging out SOFLO (Jemma Baldwin, Jianna Amores, Sofia Gomez, Mackenzie McPherson), 1:51.48-1:51.79.

The remaining events turned out to be a battle between SOFLO, Ransom Everglades, Metro Aquatics and SwimFast swimmers.

SOFLO’s boys 200-yard freestyle relay of Joshua Menezes, Maximiliano Remmele Connor Jimenez and Juan Vallmitjana won in 1:47.85.

The last TYR SOFLO Open was held in 2020 when SOFLO swept the combined team title with a then-record 1,888 points; men’s title with 900.5; and women’s title with 987.5 points with 128 swimmers.

This year SOFLO had 179 swimmers (98 boys and 81 girls) in 1,244 individual events and eight relays with 59 relay teams.

SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club hosted a field of 420 swimmers during the three-day meet at Academic Village Pool. It was the first SOFLO meet of the 2022 Florida Gold Coast season.

Several Florida Gold Coast teams entered swimmers including Metro Aquatics, SwimFast, Coral Springs Swim Club, Tsunami Swim, Ransom Everglades, Cyclones Swim Team, Hialeah Storm, Boca Raton Swim Team, Olympus, Hialeah and Hallandale-based Bravo Swim Team.

SOFLO’s Amelie Bicerne, Jaden Amores Triple Winners During Fourth Session Of TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 23, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club’s Amelie Bicerne and Jaden Amores came up big during the fourth session of the TYR South Florida Aquatic Club Open Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

Bicerne, 14, won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.80; 50-yard backstroke in 31.46 with a time drop of 1.79; and 100-yard freestyle 58.55. She finished with 57 points in high point.

Amores, 14, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.76 with a time drop of 5.18; 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.92; and 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.82. He finished with 95 points.

SOFLO swept the girls and boys 200-yard freestyle relays to open the meet.

The girls’ team of Ana Villamil, Gabriela Avila, Katelyn Gembicki and Nat Gembicki won in 1:44.14. The boys’ team of Manuel Melendez, Alexander Miller, Derek Hau and Javier Colmenares won in 1:33.83.

SOFLO won nine girls individual events and nine boys individual events.

SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club hosted a field of 420 swimmers during the three-day meet at Academic Village Pool. It is the first SOFLO meet of the 2022 Florida Gold Coast season.

SOFLO is the largest club in the meet with 179 swimmers (98 boys and 81 girls) in 1,244 individual events and eight relays with 59 relay teams.

Several Florida Gold Coast teams entered swimmers including Metro Aquatics, SwimFast, Coral Springs Swim Club, Tsunami Swim, Ransom Everglades, Cyclones Swim Team, Hialeah Storm, Boca Raton Swim Team, Olympus, Hialeah and Hallandale-based Bravo Swim Team.

Florida State Women Top University Of Miami In ACC Dual Meet

CORAL GABLES, January 22, 2022–The Florida State Seminoles dominated University of Miami for a 197-103 victory Friday.

The Seminoles, coming off the holiday break, are undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference (2-0) and 5-1 overall. UM is 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

FSU won 12 of the 16 events at the Norman Witten Pool.

“This team is special,” said FSU coach Neal Studd. “It was an awesome performance. We had some NCAA cuts, some best times and some solid stuff all around.

“This was a big win and we put up times that should easily be ranked within the Top 20 in the country. We’re excited to fine-tune some things and be great in the post season. I’m really proud of the ladies today.”

FSU has a 31-15 advantage over the Hurricanes and have won 19 of their last meets against UM. The teams have been competing since 1971.

FSU’s Nina Kucheran won the 100 breaststroke in a career-best at 59.46, an NCAA B standard. The performance ranks third in FSU history.

FSU hosts Tampa on Friday.

SOFLO’s Juan Vallmitjana Wins Four Events; SOFLO Sitting Pretty Headed Into Final Day Of TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 22, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club, buoyed by depth and talent, heads into the final day of action brimming with confidence in the TYR South Florida Aquatic Club Open.

After two sessions on Saturday, SOFLO remains in the lead in the women’s team standings with 1,025.5 points and men’s team standings with 1,035 points. SOFLO leads combined with a new record 2,060.50 points.

The last TYR SOFLO Open was held in 2020 when SOFLO swept the combined team title with a record 1,888 points; men’s title with 900.5; and women’s title with 987.5 points with 128 swimmers.

SOFLO young swimmers continued to steamroll through the third and final session of the day.

SOFLO boys won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.87 with Maximiliano Remmele, Ryan Harries, Connor Jimenez and Juan Vallmitjana.

Among SOFLO’s individual event winners were:

Christie Ann Lumsden, 9, 50-yard breaststroke 38.69, time drop 1.51.

SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club is hosting a field of 420 swimmers during the three-day meet at Academic Village Pool.

The meet concludes Sunday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. It is the first SOFLO meet of the 2022 Florida Gold Coast season.

SOFLO has the largest club with 179 swimmers (98 boys and 81 girls) in 1,244 individual events and eight relays with 59 relay teams.

Several Florida Gold Coast teams are entered including Metro Aquatics, SwimFast, Coral Springs Swim Club, Tsunami Swim, Ransom Everglades, Cyclones Swim Team, Hialeah Storm, Boca Raton Swim Team, Olympus, Hialeah and Hallandale-based Bravo Swim Team.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the following protocols are in effect in and around the facility. All people, excluding athletes actively participating in competition, warmup, and warm-down activities in the pool must wear a mask or face covering.

Spectators will only be permitted within a designated area, entering, and exiting through a single gate on the west end of the pool deck, and are encouraged to socially distance.

SOFLO Swimmers Dominate Session Two Of TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 22, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers rose to the occasion Saturday in the second session of the TYR South Florida Aquatic Club Open.

SOFLO continues to lead the men’s team standings with 675 points and women’s team standings with 747 points. Ransom Everglades is a distant second in both categories.

SOFLO age group swimmers dominated the second session with 68 percent of its swimmers turning in at least one best time during the morning.

SOFLO swept the girls and boys 200-yard medley relays. The girls’ team of Sara Quintero, Olivia Dinehart, Ana Villamil and Nat Gembicki won in 1:55.15.

The boys relay of Alejandro Mateus, Javier Colmenares, Manuel Melendez and Alexander Miller in 1:41.90.

SOFLO’s Olivia Dinehart Double Winner; SOFLO Leads After Day One Of TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 21, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers won six individual events Friday on opening night of the TYR South Florida Aquatic Club Open.

Olivia Dinehart, 17, was a double winner. She won the 100-yard individual medley in 59.75 and 400-yard individual medley in 4:35.13.

Other SOFLO winners were:

Christie Ann Lumsden, 9, won the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:23.03 with a time drop of 2.13. She has six events left to swim.

Mackenzie McPherson, 12, won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:30.25 with a time drop of 3.58. She was also fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:14.04.

Javier Colmenares, 15, won the 100-yard individual medley in 54.97.

Juan Vallmitjana, 12, won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:12.93 with a time drop of 3.28.

Other top three finishers were:

South Florida Aquatic Club took an early lead among the eight-team field on opening day. The boys’ team leads with 206 points, doubling second-place team Ransom Everglades Aquatic Club with 103.

SOFLO leads the girls competition with 200.5 points. Ransom Everglades is second with 93.

SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club is hosting a field of 420 swimmers and eight teams during the three-day meet at Academic Village Pool.

The meet continues Saturday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

It is the first SOFLO meet of the 2022 Florida Gold Coast season.

The last TYR SOFLO Open was held in 2020 when SOFLO swept the combined team title with a record 1,888 points; men’s title with 900.5; and women’s title with 987.5 points with 128 swimmers.

SOFLO has the largest club with 179 swimmers (98 boys and 81 girls) in 1,244 individual events and eight relays with 59 relay teams.

Several Florida Gold Coast teams are entered including Metro Aquatics, SwimFast, Coral Springs Swim Club, Tsunami Swim, Ransom Everglades, Cyclones Swim Team, Hialeah Storm, Boca Raton Swim Team, Olympus, Hialeah and Hallandale-based Bravo Swim Team.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the following protocols are in effect in and around the facility. All people, excluding athletes actively participating in competition, warmup, and warm-down activities in the pool must wear a mask or face covering.

Spectators will only be permitted within a designated area, entering, and exiting through a single gate on the west end of the pool deck, and are encouraged to socially distance.

South Florida Aquatic Club Kicks Off 2022 With TYR SOFLO Open

SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club will host a field of 420 swimmers during the three-day meet that gets under way Friday at Academic Village Pool.

The timed final meet begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the 200 freestyle, 100 individual medley, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley. The meet continues Saturday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
