Defending State 3A Champion Doral Prep Firebirds Dominate Four-Team Meet At Ransom-Everglades

By Sharon Robb

MIAMI, September 28, 2017–Doral Prep Firebirds came away with five wins and one tie in a four-team meet featuring Miami-Dade teams Wednesday at Ransom-Everglades.

Coached by South Florida Aquatic Club seniors and age group coach Cathy Silveira, Doral Prep Firebirds boys team, defending FHSAA State 3A champions, dominated the boys competition with depth and talent and could challenge for another state team title.

The Firebirds defeated Belen Jesuit, 183-97; Riviera, 202-64; and Ransom Everglades, 185-95.

Adrian Aguilar, a member of last year’s state champion team, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.45 and 100-yard freestyle in 49.75.

In the girls competition, Doral defeated Riviera, 198-48 and Our Lady of Lourdes 197-76; and tied Ransom-Everglades, 139-139.

Silveira, a 31-year coaching veteran, started Doral’s program 15 years ago and in recent years has been attracting more than 100 swimmers to the high school program on a consistent basis.

Last season, with only six swimmers, no divers and no individual winners, Doral made school history by becoming the first team in any sport at the school to win a state title. The swim team had never placed higher than fifth place.

Jacksonville Bolles Sweeps Team Titles At 54th Woodson Invitational; Groters, Nava Named Swimmers Of The Meet

By Sharon Robb

FORT LAUDERDALE, September 24, 2017—Defending state 1A champion Jacksonville Bolles swept the boys and girls team titles Saturday at the 54th annual Woodson Invitational at Pine Crest.

Bolles, led by distance swimmer James Kim, won the boys title with 372 points. Bolles swept all three boys relays. Bolles won only one individual event but relied on its depth and relay prowess.

Illustrating the parity in boys’ competition this season, there were six different winners in individual events.

Bolles girls won with 329.50 points after capturing only the 200-yard medley relay and also relying on its depth.

Pine Crest was second among boys with 229 and third in the girls competition with 255 just behind Boca Raton St. Andrew’s (263.50).

The boys’ team was led by junior Nicholas Vale, who won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.79 and eighth grade diver Kevin Mendez who won the 1-meter title. With three other third places, Vale finished with 28 points among high point leaders.

The Panthers’ Andrea Santander won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.39 and anchored the winning girls 400-yard freestyle relay with Alexandra Meszaros, Annabella Lyn and Marissa Brannan in 3:31.22 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.14. Santander totaled 29 points.

Despite it being mid-season, most of the teams were competing in only their second meet of the season because of Hurricane Irma. Swimmers missed practice time and were out of the pool for two weeks. Most had dryland workouts to maintain fitness. With the high level of quality competition, the meet served as a good gauge.

Boca Raton looked impressive as the top public school finisher, sweeping the fourth place girls and boys spots.

“Now we just have to start putting the pieces together and figure out what will work for districts,” said Boca Raton head coach Eric Hill. “It is difficult because this is the middle of the season, but then it affected everybody in the state of Florida. We are just getting started.”

Patrick Groters of NSU University School and Jessica Nava of Westminster Academy were named the meet’s Most Valuable Swimmers.

Groters, a senior, won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:51.43 and 100-yard backstroke in 51.77 and totaled 32 points to earn the Andy Coan Award. It was the second time in three years he earned the honor.

Nava, also a senior, finished with 32 points after winning the 50-yard freestyle in 23.84 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.07 to earn the Ann Marshall Award.

World record holder Andy Coan, a highly decorated Pine Crest swimmer before going on to make his mark at Tennessee and national and international stage, passed away in a Boca Raton hospice earlier this year in March at age 60 after losing his battle with liver cancer. His 13-year-old son Richard presented both MVP awards to Groters and Nava.

Bolles was led by a team effort including Florida State-commit breaststroker Katherine Baker. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay, placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststoke and ninth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Westminster Academy senior Chase Perry was also a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.58 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.22.

St. Andrew’s senior Lauren Hew won the 100-yard backstroke in 56.99 but may have suffered a broken finger when she touched the wall.

Mendez, the defending state champion coming off a broken thumb that kept him off the board for six weeks, won the boys 1-meter event with 497.95. He has been training for less than a week. Junior Ishani Singh won her first major invitational title with 477.25 points.

By Sharon Robb

September 23, 2017—A day before the 54th annual Woodson Invitational, FHSAA State 1A defending champion Jacksonville Bolles tuned up by sweeping host Pine Crest.

The Bolles girls team won 153-93 and boys team won 153.50-98.05.

While the Bulldogs showed off their depth and talent, the Panthers flexed their own muscles with several good swims.

Among Pine Crest’s individual event girls winners:

Andrea Santander, 15, in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.17 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.92. Santander swam a 23.92 anchor leg on the 200-yard freestyle to lead the Panthers to the win, 139:61-1:40.26.

Alexandra Meszaros, 16, in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.05 and 100-yard butterfly in 58.05.

Pine Crest won the girls’ 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.61 with Rachel Botting, Meszaros, Haley Cisewski and Santander and 400-yard freestyle in 3:37.63 with Meszaros, Cisewski, Annabella Lyn and Santander.

In the girls’ 50-yard freestyle, Bolles’ Emily MacDonald edged Rachel Botting of Pine Crest, 24.56-24.95.

In the girls’ 100-yard backstroke, only .70 separated the top three young Bolles finishers: Adair Sand, 15, 1:00.10; Mary Kate Kelley, 15, 1:00.45; and Faith Khoo, 13, 1:00.80.

In the boys swimming events, Nico Ferrara, 17, was the only Pine Crest winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.69 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.43.

In the boys’ 100-yard butterfly, Ariel Spektor of Bolles outsprinted Pine Crest’s Nicholas Vale, 51.28-51.98 and in the 100-yard backstroke, 53.49-53.56.

Pine Crest, one of the nation’s strongest high school diving programs, swept the 1-meter springboard titles.

Junior Ishani Singh won the girls’ title with 235.58 points and senior Lyle Hayes-Macaluso won the boys’ event with 258 points, just three points ahead of teammate and defending state champion Kevin Mendez, an eighth grader, with 255.
In last year’s state 1A meet, Bolles won the girls’ title by 10 points, 270-260 over Pine Crest. Bolles won the boys’ title with 384 and Pine Crest was third with 202 points.
