March 26, 2017—-The winning tradition continues at South Florida Aquatic Club.
With a combination of depth, talent and confidence, SOFLO swimmers captured the combined and boys’ team titles Sunday night at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.
SOFLO won the combined team title with a 145-point cushion with 2,748 points. Gulliver Swim Club was second with 2,571 and Pine Crest Swimming was third with 2,122 points.
In the friendly confines of their home Academic Village Swimming Pool, SOFLO swimmers added another page to its history books.
With 57 talented swimmers, SOFLO got its’ five-peat. After winning the FGC Junior Olympics for the seventh consecutive year and eighth overall earlier this month, the team captured both Seniors and JO titles in the same season for the fifth time in the team’s 17 years of existence.
“For us to be able to pull off the double of winning JOs and Seniors, that’s just crazy,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said after getting thrown into the pool during the post-meet celebration. “They found a way to win.”
Even more impressive is SOFLO accomplished the feat with no pro swimmers group.
“Our swimmers feel comfortable in our own pool,” Anderson said. “The fact we had a group that didn’t consist of pros motivated them even more. It seems more satisfying in a way to do it with our kids that have been here. I can appreciate it more for us.”
After several seconds and thirds, Kelley Heron, 17, won her first high point award since age 10 with 159 points, ahead of Jessica Nava of Pine Crest Swim Team with 149 and SOFLO teammate Jessica Rodriguez with 142.
Kathleen Golding, 16, won the 15-16 high point award with 203 points, edging out Mary Smutny, 16, of AquaKids Sharks with 200.
SOFLO had three boys in the Top 10 15-16 high point. Samuel Quintero, 16, was third with 130 points; Rafael Rodriguez, 15, was fourth with 128 points and Luke Lezotte, 16, who had a huge breakthrough meet, was tenth with 97 points.
SOFLO had two boys in the Top 10 open high point. Ervin Marin, 17, was fifth with 124 points and Ricardo Roche, 16, tied for sixth with 115 points.
Jennifer Rodriguez made her first-ever cut for the Futures Championships.
“We got some high quality swims from kids that have been loyal to our program for four or five years,” Anderson said. “It is a very satisfying accomplishment do it with the kids that we have.”
SOFLO girls opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.97 with Kelley Heron, Alia Atkinson, Catalina Mendieta and Kathleen Golding.
Among other Top 3 finishers were:
Golding, first, 50-yard butterfly, 24.98, one of five SOFLO swimmers in the finals; first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.36; and second, 50-yard freestyle, 23.23.
Atkinson, after a long layoff, first in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.51.
Ricardo Roche won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:44.8
Heron, second, 100-yard backstroke, 57.95.
“I am definitely enjoying this,” Anderson said. “I am very satisfied where our staff and team is and progress and maturity of our team. We have not only cultivated a culture but we are growing it as well. We are consistently growing athletes and that’s a really good feeling to have.”
Jennifer Martin, 36, a sergeant with the Pembroke Pines Police Department training for the Aug. 6-16 World Police & Fire Games in Los Angeles, got in some great racing against swimmers half her age.
Martin anchored SOFLO’s seventh place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:50.39; was 12th in the 50-yard butterfly in 27.79; and 15th
in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.24.
SOFLO hosted the seniors meet for the fifth time and will again host next year.
“I felt the effort everywhere from the coaches and officials to the volunteers and parents,” Anderson said. “We had some good input from the other coaches and a lot of really positive feedback. I can’t thank our officials and volunteers enough. We not only ran an efficient meet, but it was a first-class meet as well.”
