South Florida Aquatic Club Wins Combined, Boys Team Titles At FGC Senior Championships; Five-Peats JOs, Seniors In Same Season

By Sharon Robb

March 26, 2017—-The winning tradition continues at South Florida Aquatic Club.

With a combination of depth, talent and confidence, SOFLO swimmers captured the combined and boys’ team titles Sunday night at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.

SOFLO won the combined team title with a 145-point cushion with 2,748 points. Gulliver Swim Club was second with 2,571 and Pine Crest Swimming was third with 2,122 points.

In the friendly confines of their home Academic Village Swimming Pool, SOFLO swimmers added another page to its history books.

With 57 talented swimmers, SOFLO got its’ five-peat. After winning the FGC Junior Olympics for the seventh consecutive year and eighth overall earlier this month, the team captured both Seniors and JO titles in the same season for the fifth time in the team’s 17 years of existence.

“For us to be able to pull off the double of winning JOs and Seniors, that’s just crazy,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said after getting thrown into the pool during the post-meet celebration. “They found a way to win.”

Even more impressive is SOFLO accomplished the feat with no pro swimmers group.

“Our swimmers feel comfortable in our own pool,” Anderson said. “The fact we had a group that didn’t consist of pros motivated them even more. It seems more satisfying in a way to do it with our kids that have been here. I can appreciate it more for us.”

After several seconds and thirds, Kelley Heron, 17, won her first high point award since age 10 with 159 points, ahead of Jessica Nava of Pine Crest Swim Team with 149 and SOFLO teammate Jessica Rodriguez with 142.

Kathleen Golding, 16, won the 15-16 high point award with 203 points, edging out Mary Smutny, 16, of AquaKids Sharks with 200.

SOFLO had three boys in the Top 10 15-16 high point. Samuel Quintero, 16, was third with 130 points; Rafael Rodriguez, 15, was fourth with 128 points and Luke Lezotte, 16, who had a huge breakthrough meet, was tenth with 97 points.

SOFLO had two boys in the Top 10 open high point. Ervin Marin, 17, was fifth with 124 points and Ricardo Roche, 16, tied for sixth with 115 points.

Jennifer Rodriguez made her first-ever cut for the Futures Championships.

“We got some high quality swims from kids that have been loyal to our program for four or five years,” Anderson said. “It is a very satisfying accomplishment do it with the kids that we have.”

SOFLO girls opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.97 with Kelley Heron, Alia Atkinson, Catalina Mendieta and Kathleen Golding.

Among other Top 3 finishers were:

Golding, first, 50-yard butterfly, 24.98, one of five SOFLO swimmers in the finals; first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.36; and second, 50-yard freestyle, 23.23.

Atkinson, after a long layoff, first in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.51.

Ricardo Roche won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:44.8

Heron, second, 100-yard backstroke, 57.95.

“I am definitely enjoying this,” Anderson said. “I am very satisfied where our staff and team is and progress and maturity of our team. We have not only cultivated a culture but we are growing it as well. We are consistently growing athletes and that’s a really good feeling to have.”

Jennifer Martin, 36, a sergeant with the Pembroke Pines Police Department training for the Aug. 6-16 World Police & Fire Games in Los Angeles, got in some great racing against swimmers half her age.

Martin anchored SOFLO’s seventh place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:50.39; was 12th in the 50-yard butterfly in 27.79; and 15th

in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.24.

SOFLO hosted the seniors meet for the fifth time and will again host next year.

“I felt the effort everywhere from the coaches and officials to the volunteers and parents,” Anderson said. “We had some good input from the other coaches and a lot of really positive feedback. I can’t thank our officials and volunteers enough. We not only ran an efficient meet, but it was a first-class meet as well.”

I can’t think of one best swim of the night because there were so many. I really can’t ask nything else.

“I am happy with the facility, the volunteers and officiating,” Anderson said. “It was a nice intimate evening of fast swimming.”

The defending champions took the early lead on opening day and finished Sunday with a record seventh consecutive and eighth overall combined short course team title in the club’s 17-year history.

With depth, talent and outstanding coaching, SOFLO won with 935 points, nearly 300 points ahead of runner-up Gulliver Swim Club (672) and East Coast Aquatic Club (650) among a field of 36 teams.

South Florida Aquatic Club Shines On Day Two At FGC Junior Olympics

By Sharon Robb

March 18, 2017—-South Florida Aquatic Club continued to build on its lead and winning tradition during second day action at the Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics Short Course Championships Saturday at Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions.

The defending champions relied on its depth and talent to remain in the lead with 683 points, nearly 200 points ahead of Gulliver Swim Club wit 484 and East Coast Aquatic Club with 445 points.

SOFLO strength is across the board, particularly in the girls 13-14 age group which they lead with 181 points and boys 10-and-under which they also lead with 122 points and boys 13-14 which they are second with 156, just four points out of first.

SOFLO is one day away from capturing an unprecedented seventh consecutive JO short course team title in the club’s 17-year history including eight as SOFLO.

Among SOFLO’s first-place finishers were:

SOFLO 13-14 girls won the 400-yard medley relay in 4:00.16 with Kayla Cunningham, Molly Golding, Katrina Del Vecchio and Paige Lane.

Molly Golding won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.54 with a time drop of .21 seconds.

More than 600 swimmers and 33 teams are entered. The top six finishers in each JO event qualify for the Florida Gold Coast All-Star team.

In a departure from past years, the prelim and final events are being held in one 50-meter pool instead of two. Since time standards have been updated, the number of participating swimmers has decreased.

Among Florida Gold Coast teams competing are Azura, FAST, AquaKids Sharks, Metro Aquatics, Miami Swimming, FAST, North Palm Beach, Plantation Swim Team and Boca Raton Swim Team.

SOFLO is third among combined teams with 1,233.5 points behind Azura Florida Aquatic (1,572) and Kamehameha Swim Club of Hawaii (1,361.5).

SOFLO’s men’s team is second with 683.5 points and the women’s team is seventh with 418 points.

Golding, 16, finished second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:17.69, shaving 0.72 seconds off her previous best of 2:18.41. Isabel Ivey, 16, won in 2:16.92 to sweep the IM events.

After a quick turnaround, Golding came back to knock off sprinter Talia Bates, 16, of Gator Swim Club to win the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 26.24, a time drop of 0.21 off her previous best of 26.45. Bates was second in 26.34.

Both times are expected to qualify Golding, a 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, for the World Trials in Indianapolis.

Golding was also a member of the 400-meter medley relay team that finished fourth in 4:28.06 along with Kelley Heron, Jennifer Rodriguez and Melissa Marinheiro.

“That was the fastest she has been in a while,” said SOFLO coach Chris Anderson. “We are working on small technique things. We are tweaking her freestyle. Her 200 IM was far better than the 400 IM as far as strategy.”

At 15, Luke Lezotte was the youngest SOFLO swimmer to qualify for finals, placing fifth in the 50-meter freestyle in 24.13. He also finished second in consos and tenth overall in the 50-meter butterfly in a best time 26.43. His previous best was 26.75. Lezotte has 48.5 high points.

Marc Rojas, in the midst of heavy training in the weight room, was fifth in the 50-meter breaststroke in 30.80.

“I thought Luke being the youngest guy in the finals of the 50 free did a good job,” Anderson said.

“Our team is swimming very well,” Anderson said. “I am proud of what they are doing. We have a young team and they are producing very well. Our relays are being very competitive.”

SOFLO has 28 swimmers entered in the four-day meet.

A field of 614 swimmers from 60 teams and 14 unattached teams are competing in the four-day meet, one of four designated USA Swimming zones. The others are Eastern, Central and Western Zone Sectionals.

Among Florida Gold Coast teams entered are Azura Florida Aquatic, East Coast Aquatic Club, Hialeah, Boca Raton Swim Team, St. Andrew’s, Pine Crest Swimming, Metro Aquatics, North Palm Beach, Martin County, Hurricane Swimming, TS Aquatics, YMCA of South Florida and host Plantation Swim Team.
