Double Duty At Woodson, IMX Challenge Pays Off For SOFLO’s Julien Pinon

Julien Pinon did double duty as a high school and club swimmer this past weekend.

Pinon, 14, competed in the Friday Night Distance Mile, the 49th annual Woodson High School Invitational on Saturday and was back at Academic Village Pool Sunday for the final day of the IMX Challenge.

“It is hard to swim both high school and club at the same time,” Pinon said. “This weekend I was really stiff and sore but by the end of the high school season I should be totally primed.

“If you want to compete at a high level you are always going to have to compete for three or five days in a row. Days off are useless because when I come back from a day off I am more tired. I want to continue to compete and race.”

That’s just what he did. After admittedly a disappointing 12th place finish in 17:15.25 in the 1,625-yard freestyle at the Friday Night Distance Mile, Pinon bounced back on Saturday and Sunday.

Against a top-caliber field at Woodson, Pinon, competing in his first high school season for American Heritage Plantation, placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.18, won the “B” final in the 100-yard butterfly and finished seventh overall in 56.44, that would have place fifth in the “A” final. He was also a member of the Patriots’ second-place 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1:28.02 and second-place 400-yard freestyle relay that was timed in 3:13.09.

“I wanted to do well at Woodson,” Pinon said. “It was my first time going and I wanted to see how the meet was. I wanted to put myself into view so everyone knows me. I want to do good and tell people come at me, try to race me and I will try to beat you.

“I was definitely nervous in the 200 free finals. It was pretty nerve-wracking but I’ve tried to teach myself not to get so nervous. It’s getting there. I am getting used to making the big adjustment from club to high school.”

In the boys’ competition, Boca Raton knocked off Pine Crest to win the boys team title with 301 points. American Heritage Plantation was second with 237 and Pine Crest was third with 210 points.

Host Pine Crest defended its girls’ team title with 394 points. Coral Springs Charter was runner-up with 155.

“Our Heritage boys team is really good,” Pinon said. “We have so many good boys like Daniel Spas and Nico Medina, who I’ve competed against every year in club since I have been swimming. We can only get better.”

Seniors Brittany Hammond of Pine Crest and Daniel Spas of American Heritage Plantation were selected as Woodson’s Outstanding Swimmers.

Instead of taking Sunday off, Pinon competed in the IMX Challenge. Pinon won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.81 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.85, both FGJO cut times.

“I am happy how I did,” Pinon said. “After Friday night I wasn’t expecting to do good this whole weekend and the results I am getting now makes me happy.

“I always have big goals and little goals. My big goals are Winter Championships and High School States. I would like to make states in at least one individual event and make a final at states. That’s what I am aiming and working for.”

AQUATIC NOTEBOOK, Issue 195: SOFLO’s Oliver, Rodriguez To Compete In All-Florida Invitational

AQUATIC NOTEBOOK, Issue 195: SOFLO’s Oliver, Rodriguez To Compete In All-Florida Invitational

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

September 27, 2012

The University of Florida swimming and diving team will host the third annual three-day All-Florida Invitational in the Gators’ season-opener that begins on Friday at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Tiffany Oliver and Alex Rodriguez will compete for Florida State, one of eight teams in the meet.

Oliver, a junior, will compete in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles and relays. Rodriguez, a redshirt junior, will compete in the breaststroke events and medley relay.

It will be the Seminoles’ first road test.

“The test for us is to have that first competition,” FSU coach Neil Harper said. “You have to be good for six sessions.

“The great thing about this meet is that a lot of our kids are competing against former teammates from either high school or club. We’re going to get a good glance of what we have and how the athletes are responding to their training as well as whether they have got the energy and excitement to last for three days.

Other Florida Gold Coast swimmers on the Seminoles roster are: Alex Fernandez, John Jessell, David Knight, Dylan Marsolek, Juan Sequera and Ashley Hicks. Freshman Luke Torres, an American Heritage alum, will make his college debut for University of Florida and sophomore Linea Cutter will swim for Nova Southeastern.

In addition to the host Gators and FSU, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Nova Southeastern, University of Miami, North Florida and Rollins College will compete.

Prelims are 10 a.m. and finals 7 p.m.

The meet is gaining in popularity around the state. Each year schools from the state converge on the aquatic center to see how they stack up against each other in addition to gauging their training for conference schedules.

Florida Gulf Coast, FSU, Miami and Nova Southeastern have been involved in the meet all three years. FAU and North Florida are competing in their second invitational and Rollins College is making its debut.

The Gators are two-time defending champions in both the men’s and women’s team competition.

Last year the Gator women captured fifteen individual wins and five relays. The men won nine individual events and four relays to top the nine-team field.

The Gator men have won ten of their last 11 season-openers while the Gator women have won their opening meets since the program began in 1972.
