SOFLO Swimmers Chalk Up Wins, Best Times In GRSC Summer Invite

MIAMI, May 24, 2018—Diego Nazario-Vazquez won three events to highlight South Florida Aquatic Club’s success at the three-day Florida Gold Coast GRSC Summer Invite.

Nazario-Vazquez, 12, won the 11-12 50-meter freestyle in a best time 29.97; 50-meter backstroke in a best time 34.84; and 50-meter butterfly in a best time 32.19 to lead the SOFLO boys team.

Christian Tijero, 12, was a double winner, capturing the 11-12 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:19.95. He also tied for first in the 50-meter breaststroke in 42.10.

Mariana Pinto, 10, was a double winner to lead the SOFLO girls team. She won the 10-and-under 200-meter freestyle in 2:40.93 and 100-meter freestyle in 1:15.70.

Other individual SOFLO winners were:

Javier Colmenares, 11, won the 11-12 200-meter individual medley in 2:42.90.

Kerry Cunningham, 12, won the 11-12 200-meter individual medley in a best time 2:53.09.

Luna Delgado, 12, won the 11-12 50-meter butterfly in a best time 33.81.

Jonathan Lozano, 10, won the 10-and-under 100-meter freestyle in a best time 1:11.85.

Anastasia Lutz, 11, won the 11-12 50-meter freestyle in a best time 31.37.

Alessandro Pereira, 11, won the 11-12 100-meter backstroke in 1:18.11.

Giada Porven, 10, won the 10-and-under 50-meter backstroke in a best time 41.56.

Natalia Sibug, 12, won the 11-12 50-meter breaststroke in a best time 39.41.

In one of the most exciting boys’ races on Saturday, Miguel Cancel, 18, of AquaKids Sharks outsprinted Aitor Fungairino, 17, of Metro Aquatics by 2/100ths of a second, 1:57.45-1:57.47, in the 200-meter freestyle.

SOFLO’s Lance Lesage Wins Closest Race Of The Day At FIU Spring LC Invitational

NORTH MIAMI, May 20, 2018—In the most exciting race of the day, Lance Lesage of South Florida Aquatic Club outsprinted Sean Arrington of Miami Swimming by 7/100ths of a second in the 100-meter backstroke Sunday at the FIU Spring Long Course Invitational at FIU Aquatic Center.

Lesage, 15, won in 1:05.69. Arrington, 20, finished in 1:05.76. Arrington was the fastest seed in the event in 1:02.19. Lesage was second fastest in 1:02.26.

SOFLO swept the 400-meter freestyle girls and boys events. Paige Lane, 15, won in 4:47.57. Leonardo Mateus, 16, won in 4:38.79.

SOFLO boys swept the top four spots in the 100-meter freestyle with Rafael Rodriguez, 16, winning in 56.44 followed by Robert Wilson, 15, Heath Brames, 18, and Juan Pineda, 15.

SOFLO swept the top three spots in the 200-meter breaststroke with Juan Pineda, 15, winning in 2:42.68.

Brennan Binder, 14, broke 5 minutes for the first time in the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:49.84. His previous best was 5:00.51.

Shayna Blitz, 13, turned in a nice time drop in the 200-meter breaststroke. The teenager finished eighth in 3:38.20 improving her previous best of 4:02.36.

Mallory Schleicher, 14, second, 100-meter backstroke, 1:15.95, drop from 1:19.13.

SOFLO Swimmers Shine On Opening Day Of FIU Spring LC Invite

NORTH MIAMI, May 19, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club dominated opening day of the FIU Spring Long Course Invitational at rain-soaked FIU Aquatic Center.

Swimmers are swimming through the meet, using it more for fine tuning and training gauge. But there were some outstanding swims turned in by some of the contingent’s youngest swimmers.

Victoria Torres, 13, was the youngest finisher in the top five of the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:25.94. Her previous best was 1:26.50. She was the only SOFLO swimmer in the field to drop time. Four-time Jamaican Olympian and SOFLO teammate Alia Atkinson won in 1:13.58, off her seed time of 1:06.48.

Two other SOFLO 13-year-olds had impressive time drops. Enrique Rodriguez finished fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:22.00, bettering his 1:28.42 previous best. Samuel Bullen was sixth in 1:22.20, improving his previous best of 1:29.67.

SOFLO girls swept the top seven spots in the 200-meter butterfly with four posting best times. Jessica Rodriguez, 19, won in 2:31.97, bettering her previous best of 2:38.91. Rodriguez also won the 400-meter individual medley in 5:23.76.

SOFLO boys took the top nine out of 10 places in the 200-meter backstroke with Rafael Rodriguez, 16, winning in 2:18.75. Rodriguez also won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:14.79.

Other SOFLO winners were Heath Brames in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:06.37; Joseph Lee in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:17.64; and Leonardo Mateus in the 400-meter individual medley in 5:11.89.

The meet concludes on Sunday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

SOFLO Swimmers Hit The Road This Weekend For Two Miami Meets

MIAMI, May 17, 2018—More than 100 South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will compete at two meets this weekend.

The Gulliver Summer Invitational will feature 51 SOFLO swimmers (27 girls, 24 boys), mostly age group swimmers. The three-day meet is timed finals and gets under way Friday.

On Friday night, the 11-and-over 800- and 1500-meter freestyle events will open the meet. Gulliver dominates the entries in the girls heats in the 800 and boys heats in the 1500.

SOFLO has three swimmers in the distance events. Gavin Sheyda, 12, and Christian Tijero, 12, are in the same 1500 heat. Anastasia Lutz, 11, is the only SOFLO girl in the 800.

SOFLO has the top four seeds in the 11-12 200-meter freestyle and six in the top seven. Javier Colmenares, 11, is seeded first in 2:23.82. He is also top seed in the 50-meter freestyle in 31.77 and 200-meter individual medley in 2:42.61.

Alessandro Pereira, 11, is seeded first in the 11-12 100-meter backstroke in 1:17.43.

Diego Nazario-Vazquez, 12, is top seed in the 11-12 100-meter butterfly in 1:16.07 followed by teammate Javier Colmenares, 11, in 1:16.89. Nazario-Vazquez is also No. 1 seed in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:06.19 ahead of Javier Colmenares in 1:07.73.

Christian Tijero, 12, is top seed in the 11-12 50-meter backstroke in 36.72.

Luna Delgado, 12, is top seed in the 11-12 100-meter butterfly in 1:17.03 followed by Kerry Cunningham, 12, in 1:20.97. Delgado is also first seed in the 11-12 50-meter butterfly in 35.58.

Kerry Cunningham, 12, is seeded first in the 11-12 100-meter backstroke in 1:20.11. She is one of four SOFLO swimmers seeded in the top four and one of six in the top seven.

Natalia Sibug, 12, is top seed in the 11-12 200-meter individual medley in 2:53.45 followed by teammates Luna Delgado, 12, and Kerry Cunningham, 12. Sibug is also No. 1 seed in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:27.26.

Giada Porven, 10, is No. 1 seed in the 10-and-under 100-meter freestyle in 1:16.07.

Alexis Christensen, 12, is top seed in the 11-12 100-meter freestyle in 1:08.57.

The FIU Spring Long Course Invite that features 55 SOFLO swimmers (24 girls, 31 boys), mostly from the senior group and a few age groupers, is Saturday and Sunday at the FIU Aquatic Center.

The SOFLO contingent is led by four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, at 29, one of the oldest swimmers in the meet. She is entered in five events including the 100-meter breaststroke.

Atkinson is seeded first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.48; first in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.04; first in the 100 freestyle in 55.35; first in the 100 butterfly in 59.94 and second in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.54.

Among other SOFLO swimmers competing are Jonathan Farah, 20, Kylie Herman, 20, CJ Kopecki, 18, Melissa Marinheiro, 21, Jessica Rodriguez, 19, Ricardo Roche, 18, Heath Brames, 18, Rafael Rodriguez, 16, Juan Pablo Pineda, 15, Daniela Curbelo, 15, and Mallory Schleicher, 14.

SOFLO’s Grant, Porven, Mateus Brothers Win At Swim Miami; Schleicher 11th In 5K Junior Open Water Nationals Debut

MIAMI, May 6, 2018–South Florida Aquatic Club distance swimmers were busy this past weekend.

At Swim Miami, Gina Grant, Giada Porven and Alejandro and Leonardo Mateus won Sunday off Miami Marine Stadium.

Grant, 20, won the Special Olympics one mile overall women’s title in 28:44.

Giada Porven, 10, won the 10-and-under one mile age group in 24:51.

Leonardo Mateus, 16, won the 15-16 one mile age group in 18:20, was third overall and second overall among boys. Alejandro Mateus, 12, won the 11-12 one mile age group in 19:29 and was 14th overall.

Oceane Peretti, 20, won the overall 10K title and women’s race in 1:58:05.45. She was the only swimmer to crack two hours for the 6.2-mile course. Andres Lares, 18, of Davie was second overall and first male finisher in 2:00:13.41.

In the 5K, Adrian Aguilar, 17, of Kendall won the overall title and men’s race in 56:59. Anna Montgomery, 17, of Fort Lauderdale won the women’s title and was sixth overall in 57:27.

In the one-mile race, Olivia Hernandez, 16, of Miami won the overall and women’s titles in 17:37. Miguel Cancel, 18, was top men’s finisher and second overall in 18:17.

Katrina Bellio, 13, of Toronto won the overall title in the 800-meter swim in 14:09.38 ahead of teammate Kenna Smallegange, 14, in 14:09.60. Michael Wang, 13, also of Toronto won the boys race in 14:28 and was third overall.

USA SWIMMING 5K JUNIOR NATIONALS

TEMPE, ARIZ.—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Mallory Schleicher was 11th in her USA Swimming Women’s Junior 5K National Championships debut Saturday at Town Lake.

Schleicher finished 11th out of a field of 32 open water swimmers in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 31.37, 5.62 behind winner Denigan Mariah of Northern Ky. Clippers Swimming in 1:01.05.32.

Anna Auld of Delray Beach-based East Coast Aquatic Club was top Florida Gold Coast finisher placing third in 1:02:31.78, just 2.36 out of first place.

In his open water debut, Jackson Carlile of Fishers Area Swimming Tigers won a close race against Connor Hunt of Ridgefield Aquatic Club in 59:57.91, just two seconds ahead in 1:00:00.26. It was Carlile’s first-ever open water race. Only 10 boys were in the field. The top two boys and girls finishers qualified for the World Junior Championships.

SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher Tunes Up For USA Swimming 5K Open Water Junior Nationals At IMR-IMX Challenge

SUNRISE, May 2, 2018—Mallory Schleicher got in a little fine tuning for Saturday’s USA Swimming 5K Open Water Junior Nationals in Tempe (Ariz.) Town Lake at this past weekend’s IMR-IMX Challenge at Sunrise Civic Center Pool.

Schleicher, 14, one of the top open water swimmers on the South Florida circuit, won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:36.59 on opening night of the three-day meet.

Schleicher also won the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 5:16.46, dropping 5.27 seconds from her previous best. Teammate Kayla Cunningham, 15, was third in 5:28.20, also a best time, dropping 14.42.

Schleicher was second in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:03.71, another best time and time drop of 2.30 and second in the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:36.47, a 8.20 time drop. She was third in the 200-meter butterfly in a best time 2:34.92, dropping 2.25. She was fifth in the 200-meter breaststroke in a best time 3:01.04, dropping an impressive 13.28 seconds.

Also in the girls’ 400-meter freestyle, several SOFLO swimmers had some huge time drops. Natalia Sibug, 12, dropped 43.13 seconds in 5:32.70; Reagan Lowe, 12, dropped 29.94 in 5:32.69; Victoria Torres, 13, dropped 28.89 in 5:13.99; Mariann Catalasan, 12, dropped 18.25 in 5:32.78 and Alana Acevedo, 16, dropped 15.73 in 5:24.86. Two unattached SOFLO swimmers, JennaMarie Brames, 14, dropped 47.99 in 5:14.47 and Sally Golding, 14, dropped 30.49 in 5:09.89.

In the boys competition, SOFLO was led by Jonathan Lozano, the top finisher in the 200-meter freestyle. Lozano, 10, was second in the 12-and-under 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:30.01.

JON OLSEN GOLD MEDAL INVITE

SOFLO’s Sofia and Sabrina Osorio competed in the Jon Olsen Gold Medal Invitational this past weekend at Ron Levy Aquatic Center in Islamorada. The three-day meet featured 383 swimmers from 14 teams.

Sabrina Osorio had the best finish, placing seventh in the 50-meter breaststroke in 39.69. In other SOFLO results:
