Pembroke Pines Charter Sweeps Everglades, Nova, South Plantation; SOFLO Swimmers Shine

By Sharon Robb
DAVIE, January 29, 2021—Pembroke Pines Charter’s swim team was clearly ready for the abbreviated 2020-21 Broward County Athletic Association high school season.

With the majority of swimmers benefiting from training and competing with South Florida Aquatic Club during the ongoing pandemic, Pembroke Pines Charter is clearly one of the strongest teams around.

Even better, the high school team is coached by veteran SOFLO age group coach Rose Lockie.

The girls’ team remains undefeated after defeating South Plantation, 116-22; Nova 110-44; and Everglades 112-13 Thursday at the Titans’ pool.

The boys’s team, after a close 48-45 loss to Everglades last week, picked up three more wins, 116-18 over South Plantation; 115-47 over Nova; and 78-73 avenging win over Everglades.

South Florida Aquatic Club dominated the meet with several swimmers on Everglades and Pembroke Pines Charter. SOFLO swimmers won every boys’ individual event and relays, and all but four girls’ events.

Pembroke Pines Charter swept the girls relays. Kaitlyn Jorgensen and Victoria Torres were double winners. Jorgensen won the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle. Torres won the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.

Maria Herne, Daniela Barreto and Jena Legaspi won individual events for Pembroke Pines Charter.

The boys’ matchup between Pembroke Pines Charter and Everglades was close again, pitting SOFLO teammates against each other.

Everglades won two relays and Pembroke Pines Charter won one. Ryan Alfonso and Christian Tijero won individual events.

Brothers Juan and Javier Colmenares, also SOFLO swimmers, were double individual event winners for Everglades but it was Pembroke Pines Charter that edged Everglades with a little more depth.

Aldo Zepeda and Manuel Melendez were individual winners for Everglades.

Pembroke Pines Charter next meet is Feb. 4 against Coral Springs Charter and Flanagan at 7 p.m. at Academic Village Pool. Everglades will swim Douglas and Nova, also on Feb. 4, at the Titans’ pool at 6 p.m.

U.S. Olympic Trials Split Into Two Meets As Pandemic Safety Precaution; 2021 Tokyo Olympics Still A Go

By Sharon Robb
OMAHA, Neb., January 26, 2021–In a departure from past U.S. Olympic swimming trials, the qualifying event will be split into two meets because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

With the Tokyo Games six months away, USA Swimming announced Tuesday it is revising the swimming trials because of continued coronavirus risks including limiting the number of swimmers who can compete indoors at CHI Health Center Arena.

The organization announced it will have fewer than half its usual number of competitors, 750 swimmers (50 to 60 swimmers in each event) trying to qualify for one of 50 or so spots on the U.S. Olympic team.

The smaller group of participants will reduce the number of people inside CHI Health Center Arena and allow for swimmers to maintain a safe social distance, “a safer and healthier environment for the competitors and everyone involved,” USA Swimming said in a news release.

A Wave I meet of lower-ranked swimmers, about 550-650, who qualified for the trials is scheduled for June 4-7.

The top two finishers will advance to the main Wave II meet with about 750 swimmers on June 13-20, the previous scheduled dates for the Trials, to determine who will represent the U.S. at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, July 23-Aug. 8.

USA Swimming also implemented new qualifying standards required for the Wave II meet, based on the 41st seeded athlete as of Jan. 26.

In past quadreniums, the Trials were staged as a spectacle with fireworks inside the facility. The nationally-televised meet was staged before sold-out crowds over eight days. In 2016, there were more than 1,700 qualifiers mainly because the popularity of the sport had grown because of legendary Michael Phelps.

“It’s the greatest spectacle in swimming,” Tim Hinchey, USA Swimming’s president and chief executive told the Washington Post. “The reality is, as important as it is to create that fantastic Super Bowl-like environment for our top elite athletes, and we know that experience has absolutely transferred into gold medals and results at Olympic Games, we also know for that 12- or 13-year old, walking into that stadium and experiencing this kind of meet is also aspirational to the next set of Games. It’s got to touch both sides.”

Officials said the two meets will look and feel the same. More than 1,300 swimmers have already earned qualifying cut times for the Trials.

Event organizers are still working out a detailed health and safety plan, and no decision has been made yet on spectators at trials.

Officials said some fans will be able to attend trials in-person. Five years ago, nearly 200,000 spectators attended the eight-day event, but USA Swimming has yet to put tickets on sale for this June’s trials.

Local regulations in Omaha allow for 75-percent capacity at the CHI Health Center Arena, which is home of the Creighton University basketball teams but also hosts other major events such as concerts.

NBC is still expected to broadcast the Wave II showcase event, but USA Swimming has not announced broadcast plans for its preliminary Wave I meet.

“We want to keep that promise to the first-timer, not just the veteran, and I think this accomplishes that,” Hinchey said. “We know that 13 year-old may not have an impact this year, but history tells us it makes a big impact for the next Olympic Games. Already knowing that our next quad went from four years down to three, this is important.”

SOFLO could have at least three Trials qualifiers including Kathleen Golding, Mary Smutny and Miguel Cancel.

With the Opening Ceremonies six months away, IOC President Thomas Bach said that he received confirmation from all 206 National Olympic Committees that they’re committed to the Games, along with full support from the Japanese government and all IOC members.

“Everybody is really determined to make this Olympic Games, in six months from now, the light at the end of the tunnel in which, at this moment, we are all still in,” Bach said in a video statement.

South Florida Aquatic Club Makes History, Awarded USA Swimming Safe Sport Club Recognition For Second Time

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, January 26, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club reached another milestone by receiving USA Swimming Safe Sport Club recognition for the second time.

In 2019, the first year the program was instituted, SOFLO was the first Florida Gold Coast club to receive recognition and remains the first FGC club for the second time.

The USA Swimming Safe Sport Program raises awareness about misconduct in swimming, promotes open dialogue, and provides training and resources. USA Swimming is committed to making swimming safe for everyone.

USA Swimming’s Safe Sport program consists of a multi-layered approach to keep kids safe, including: required policies and best practice guidelines; mandatory screening, criminal background checks and employment screening; training and education; monitoring, supervision and mandatory reporting. These measures are informed by experts in the field of child safety and are among the strongest safeguards found in youth-serving organizations.

SOFLO and other USA Swimming members use the policies, guidelines, best practices, strategies and tools to create a safe atmosphere at SOFLO’s home Academic Village Pool and away meets.

USA Swimming put together a Safe Sport handbook which is designed to help USA Swimming members to implement safe sport practices at the local level. The handbook is online and also is mailed to each of USA Swimming’s member clubs.

SOFLO CEO and head coach Chris Anderson said he is committed to fostering a fun, healthy and safe sport environment for all its members including swimmers, parents and coaches.

Anderson was informed that SOFLO received Safe Sport recognition this week.

“It shows our dedication to making the sport of swimming a healthy and positive environment, free from abuse for our athletes,” Anderson said.

“This is an exciting time for our team and we want to continue to be a leader in our community to provide a healthy and positive environment. Thank you to our coaches, athletes, parents and booster club who helped make this happen, we could not be prouder. We will continue to stay committed to creating a healthy and positive environment.”

Trish Hughes, Administrative Assistant and Background Check Coordinator for USA Swimming, wrote:

“Congratulations on achieving Safe Sport Club Recognition for South Florida Aquatic Club. I hope that you found the process of policy review and education beneficial. I have also copied your LSC office, general chair, Membership Chair, and the Safe Sport chair on this message because good work should be celebrated.”

USA Swimming’s Safe Sport program will continue to spark meaningful discussions across the country to strengthen open, productive communication channels.

SOFLO also qualifies for the Keeping Athletes First Incentive and will be entered into a monthly drawing for a visit from a National Team athlete or alum. Additionally, each month USA Swimming randomly selects a recent SSRP-approved club to be featured on the USA Swimming website.

South Florida Aquatic Club Sweeps Team Titles In New Year’s Invitational

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, January 23, 2021–The hard work and dedication is paying off for South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers and coaches.

SOFLO swept the boys and girls team titles at the two-day, five-team South Florida Aquatic Club New Year’s Invitational Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

The girls’ team led from start-to-finish to win with 700 points. Metro Aquatic Club of Miami was runner-up with 465 points.

The boys’ team, also early leaders, won with 664.5 points. Metro Aquatic Club of Miami was second with 489 points.

“I was excited about the fact we got some real solid races against some other clubs,” SOFLO CEO and head coach Chris Anderson said. “It’s nice to do at the beginning of the year with non-tech suit swims. We are right where we left off, if not even better.

“It’s the hard work. We got more pool time and we took advantage of the long days during Christmas break. These kids are going to fly when it comes to their championship meet. This was a building block for these kids to perform at JOs, Senior Champs and now sectionals.”

Anderson was happy with the total team effort, particularly the 13-14 year olds and developmental swimmers.

“Our 13-14 age group really emerged this week,” Anderson said. “I think their training, consistency and added extra days have really got them prepared for these meets. More importantly was the kids who had no times, the Senior Fit Kids and the kids who haven’t really competed since almost a year. They had huge drops and that was really nice to see. They did such a great job. They really stepped it up.”

SOFLO swept the top three places in the boys’ 50-yard backstroke with Juan Mora, Ricardo Roche and Nathaniel Garrick.

SOFLO swept the top six places in the 50-yard breaststroke with Sophia Grubbs, 15, winning in 31.47. Maria Legaspi, Fiorella Di Salvo and Dahlia Hirsh all dropped time in the event.

SOFLO’s event winners were:

Maddie Smutny, 15, 200-yard freestyle 1:56.08.

Juan Mora, 16, 50-yard butterfly, 22.93, time drop, 0.19; 50-yard backstroke, 23.76, time drop 2.64; 50-yard breaststroke, 26.89, time drop 0.14.

Miguel Sierra, 17, 100-yard backstroke, 53.45; 200-yard individual medley, 1:59.52, time drop 4.20, first time broke 2 minutes.

Olivia Dinehart, 16, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:07.10.

Julio Horrego, 22, 100-yard breaststroke, 54.87.

Sophia Grubbs, 15, 50-yard breaststroke, 31.47.

SOFLO girls also swept the 200-yard free relays. The 13-14 relay of Gaby Avila, Fiorella DiSalvo, Gabriella DeLuna and Julianne McCranie won in 1:47.75. The 15-and-over relay of Elena Dinehart, Lucy Smutny, Alexis Christensen and Olivia Dinehart won in 1:44.49.

SOFLO boys won the 15-and-over 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:31.79 with Miguel Sierra, Tristan Wilson, Leonardo Mateus and Juan Mora.

Much like other SOFLO meets, strict COVID-19 guidelines were enforced because of the ongoing pandemic now in Day 306.

As meet host, SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club have taken enhanced health and safety measures for swimmers, coaches, officials and volunteer timers for all their home meets.

The meet, sanctioned by the Florida Gold Coast, adhered to strict COVID-19 safety measures and precautions including no fans. No parents or friends were allowed to congregate outside the pool fencing or allowed on the pool deck. The meet was run with a limited number of officials and volunteer timers. All sessions were live streamed on YouTube and SOFLO’s Facebook page.

“The meet went really well, the coaches on all the clubs were very supportive with the COVID protocol,” Anderson said. “The atmosphere with all the coaches was really positive because they were so excited to swim.”
