SOFLO Swimmers Will Go The Distance At Mile By Moonlight Friday In Boca Raton

BOCA RATON, January 31, 2019—South Florida Aquatic Club will compete Friday in the Boca Raton Swim Team Mile by Moonlight at the Boca Raton High School Aquatics Center.

The 1,650-yard freestyle will be held at 5 p.m. Warm-up is 4 p.m.

SOFLO has 24 swimmers, up from 11 last year, competing in the 1,650-yard freestyle solely on opening night.

South Florida Aquatic Club Sweeps Combined, Girls And Boys Team Titles At TYR SOFLO Open

NORTH MIAMI, January 28, 2020–With a strong finish in the final two sessions, South Florida Aquatic Club won the TYR SOFLO Open Sunday at FIU Aquatic Center at Florida International University’s North Campus.

SOFLO, with the largest team of 128 swimmers (69 boys and 59 girls) won the combined team title with a record 1,888 points ahead of early leader Metro Aquatics with 1,525.

SOFLO won the men’s title with 900.5 and Metro Aquatics was runner-up with 864. SOFLO won the women’s title with 987.5 and Midtown Weston Aquatics was second with 838.5.

SOFLO’s A relay of Miguel Sierra, Robert Wilson, Sebastian Lares and Rafael Rodriguez won the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Other SOFLO winners were:

Sarah Acevedo, 200-yard butterfly, 2:11.57.

Olivia Dinehart, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:07.63; 100-yard freestyle, 54.15.

SOFLO’s Shelby Evans Leads SOFLO Sharks In Session Two Of TYR SOFLO Open

NORTH MIAMI, January 25, 2020–Shelby Evans of South Florida Aquatic Club was the lone winner in the second session of the TYR SOFLO Open Saturday at FIU Aquatic Center at Florida International University’s North Campus.

Evans, 9, finished first, third and fourth in her events, all with lifetime-bests.

Evans won the 12-and-under 200-yard breaststroke in 3:06.72, shaving 21.51 seconds off her previous best. She was also third in the 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 40.14, dropping 0.06 and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:38.11, dropping 0.75. She has 26 points for high point.

Evans has the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard individual medley left to swim on Sunday.

Teammate Mackenzie McPherson was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:32.52. Jemma Baldwin was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:31.94.

Ryan Harries led the SOFLO boys. He was second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 38.43 and third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 3:01.61. Harries also has 26 points for high point.

Derek Hau was second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 33.31.

Olivia, Elena Dinehart Sisters Shine In Session One Of TYR SOFLO Open

NORTH MIAMI, January 25, 2020–Olivia and Elena Dinehart led South Florida Aquatic Club in the opening session of the TYR SOFLO Open Saturday at FIU Aquatic Center at Florida International University’s North Campus.

Elena Dinehart, 15, and Olivia Dinehart, 15, and started off the morning leading off and anchoring the winning girls’ 200-yard medley relay in 1:53.36. Other relay members were Molly Golding and Paige Lane.

Elena Dinehart won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.05.

Olivia Dinehart won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:01.98. Elena was second in 1:03.37.

Olivia Dinehart won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:13.85 and Elena was second in 5:20.93.

SOFLO’s four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, 31, fresh off her big payday at the FINA Swim Series, won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.45 and 50-yard freestyle in 24.37.

SOFLO boys had a good session, too.

The boys won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.88 with Rafael Rodriguez, Manuel Melendez, Miguel Sierra and Robert Wilson.

Sierra also won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.07 ahead of teammate Philopatier Ibrahim in 53.26.

Rodriguez won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.39.

After the opening two sessions, Metro Aquatics led combined with 433 and SOFLO was second with 384; Metro Aquatics led the men with 202 and SOFLO second with 147; and SOFLO led the women with 237 and Metro Aquatics second with 231.

SOFLO has the largest team with 128 swimmers (69 boys and 59 girls).

The meet concludes on Sunday with two sessions.

Among teams competing in the Florida Gold Coast meet are Metro Aquatics, Hialeah, Ransom Everglades, Southern Wahoos, Cooper City, SwimFast and City of Miami.

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Takes Bronze On Final Day Of FINA Champions Swim Series

BEIJING, China, January 20, 2020—Alia Atkinson settled for a bronze medal on the final day of the FINA Champions Swim Series 2020.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s four-time Jamaican Olympian was third out of four swimmers in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:08.88. China’s Jingyao Yu won in 1:07.18 and Italy’s Martina Carraro was second in 1:07.25.

Atkinson pocketed $6,000 for a third place finish. Atkinson has now won $26,000 in two meets. She won $12,000 for two third places in Shenzhen and $14,000 for a second and third place in Beijing.

The race of the meet was Canadian Sydney Pickrem knocking off Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu in the 200-meter individual medley, 2:09.26-2:09.93.

It broke a 56-final winning streak for Hosszu in long course meters and short course meters. Her last loss in the event in either course came at the 2017 FFN Golden Tour stop in Amiens, France where she swam a 2:15.36 to place third behind Cyrielle Duhamel and Fantine Lesaffre of Hungary.

Hosszu is defending Olympic Champion, 4-time defending World Champion in long course, 3-time defending World Champion in short course, 4-time European Champion in long course and 5-time defending European Champion in short course. She’s World Record holder and won 51-consecutive World Cup swims.

Pickrem won $10,000 for first place. The world championship bronze medalist now has the seventh fastest time of her career in long course.

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Takes Silver On Day One Of FINA Champions Swim Series, Pockets $8,000

BEIJING, China, January 18, 2020—Alia Atkinson, leading for most of the race, was out-touched by American Molly Hannis on Day One of the FINA Champions Swim Series 2020 on Saturday.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s four-time Jamaican Olympian was leading the 50-meter breaststroke when Hannis made up ground in the final 10 meters to win in 30.34. Hannis won $10,000.

Atkinson was second in 30.44, winning $8,000. Atkinson has now won $20,000 in two meets. She won $12,000 for two third places in Shenzhen.

Italian Maria Carraro was third in 30.79 pocketing $6,000. Carraro was also third in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:28.80.

China won five gold medals including three-time Olympic champion Sun Yang in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:45.55.

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:09.95. She was fourth in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:00.20. Hosszu, 30, was recently named Hungary Sportswoman of the Year for a record seventh time. Hosszu accepted her award via a recorded message since she is in China this week competing at the FINA Champions Series.

Hosszu is the leading money winner so far on the FINA Champions Swim Series with $43,000 after the two-day opener in Shenzhen.

The two-day meet continues on Sunday. Atkinson will compete in the 100-meter breaststroke, seeded in 1:07.76. Only four swimmers are in each event.

Track superstars Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Tajay Gayle were named RJRGleaner Sports Foundation Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year at a gala ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus in New Kingston Friday night. Atkinson was among six other nominees. Shericka Jackson was women’s runnerup.

SOFLO’s Jordan Evans Sweeps Events At Sunrise Sizzler

SUNRISE, January 18, 2020—Jordan Evans of South Florida Aquatic Club dominated the girls’ competition Saturday in the Sunrise 8-and-under Sizzler at Sunrise Civic Center.

Evans, 8, won all four of her individual events and turned in three lifetime best times in the 25-yard backstroke, 25-yard breaststroke and 25-yard freestyle.

Evans won the 25-yard butterfly in 18.95, 25-yard backstroke in 19.04, 25-yard breaststroke in 20.33 and 25-yard freestyle in 15.93.

Christie Ann Lumsden, 7, had one third, two fourths and one sixth place. Her highest finish was third in the 25-yard breaststroke in a best time 23.19.

SOFLO’s boys top finishers were Matthew Ortiz, Alessandro Suarez Cabrera and Toma Petkov.

Ortiz, 8, was second in the 25-yard backstroke in a best time 21.12, second in the 25-yard freestyle in a best time 16.96 and third in the 25-yard butterfly in 18.82.

Suarez Cabrera, 8, was second in the 25-yard breaststroke in a best time 24.25

Petkov, 7, was third in the 25-yard breaststroke in 25.85 and fourth in the 25-yard butterfly in a best time 21.20.

SOFLO also swept the boys and girls 8-and-under 100-yard freestyle relays topping Coral Springs Swim Club and Sunrise Swimming.

SOFLO had nine swimmers (five boys and four goals) compete in 36 individual events and two relays.

SOFLO Headed To Sunrise Sizzler This Weekend

SUNRISE, January 17, 2020—It’s Show Time for South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers.

Nine swimmers (five boys and four goals) will compete in 36 individual events and two relays Saturday in the Sunrise 8-and-under Sizzler at Sunrise Civic Center. The meet begins 10:30 a.m.

The meet is so much fun and social for young swimmers. Coaches get to watch their swimmers progress while fine tuning starts, strokes and pace.

Swimmers entered are Gabriela Ekht, 8; Luis Escobar, 7; Jordan Evans, 8; David Gonzalez, 8; Christie Lumsden, 7; Matthew Ortiz, 8; Toma Petkov, 7; Hayeon Song, 8; and Cabrera Suarez, 8.

The meet is open to all current USA swimming registered athletes and foreign athletes with proper travel credentials who have been invited by USA Swimming who are age 8 and under.

Any swimmer entered in the meet must be certified by a USA Swimming member coach as being proficient in performing a racing start or must start each race from within the water.

When: Saturday, warm-up 10 a.m., meet starts 10:30 p.m.

Where: Sunrise Civic Center, 10610 West Oakland Park Blvd., Sunrise.

How to get there: From the east, take Oakland Park Blvd. to just west of Nob Hill Rd. Turn left after Safety Complex. From the south, take Nob Hill north to Oakland Park Blvd. Turn left on Oakland Park, and left again after the Safety Complex.

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Gets Second Bronze On Day Two Of 2020 FINA Champions Swim Series

SHENZHEN, China, January 15, 2020–Alia Atkinson took home a second bronze medal Wednesday in the season-opening 2020 FINA Champions Swim Series at Shenzhen Universiade Center Swimming Natatorium.

The four-time Jamaican Olympian and short course world record holder finished third in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:08.15. She was seeded in 1:07.06 among a field of four swimmers.

Italy’s national record holder Martina Carraro won her second breaststroke gold in 1:06.85 and China’s Yu Jingyao was second in 1:07.59 on the second and final day of the series’ first stop.

On Tuesday, Atkinson was third in the 50-meter breaststroke in 30.63 behind Italy’s Martina Carraro in 30.38 and American Molly Hannis in 30.49.

Atkinson won $12,000 for two third places.

It was the first leg of the series with the second stop coming up on Jan. 18-19 in Beijing. The meet featured only 70 swimmers (41 men and 29 women). Almost $2 million in prize money is up for grabs at the two stops.
