SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher, Three Other Florida Gold Coast Swimmers Chosen For USA Swimming National Select Camp

By Sharon Robb
COLORADO SPRINGS, September 30, 2021—Mallory Schleicher of South Florida Aquatic Club and Cooper City High School is one of 102 athletes invited by USA Swimming to the 2020 National Select Camp.

USA Swimming released its lineup of 102 swimmers, 51 boys and 51 girls, who will attend the USA Swimming National Select Camps, postponed from the fall of 2020 to October 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Schleicher, a University of Florida commit, will be joined by Heidi Smithwick of Jupiter Dragons, Erika Pelaez of Eagle Aquatics and Stanford-bound Josh Zuchowski of Flood Aquatics Swim Team (FAST).

Schleicher was selected for her 400 individual medley (4:53.96); Smithwick, the 50 freestyle (25.90); Pelaez, the 100 freestyle (56.03); and Zuchowski, the 200 backstroke (2:00.76).

This camp is designed for the top USA Swimming member athletes in the nation to have a once-in-a-lifetime camp experience.

According to USA Swimming, during the three-day camps, the 51 boys and 51 girls attending will experience the day-to-day routine of a National Team athlete.

The campers will learn from top aquatic professionals about post-race recovery, drug and supplement rules, psychological training skills, nutrition and race strategy. 2020 Tokyo Olympic alumni of the program include Katie Ledecky, Michael Andrew, Lily King, Hali Flickinger, Kieran Smith and Bobby Finke.

Swimmers were selected from the SWIMS database using their top time throughout the January 1, 2019-August 31, 2020, qualifying period. The three-fastest athletes of each gender, aged 14-16, in each Olympic event earned an invitation. After that, the six swimmers with the best IMX scores and the top-three open water swimmers, who weren’t already selected, were included to round out the 51 slots per gender.

The National Select Camps are scheduled for October 7-10, 2021 (girls) and October 14-17, 2021 (boys) at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, California. The swimmers will be joined by established staff members chosen from various teams around the country.

USA Swimming is hosting the 2020 camp athletes in October 2021 (originally slated for January 2021 due to the Olympic year). The 2022 camps will be held in October 2022.

The meet will be scored. Swimmers who complete all IMR events will receive an IMR score. Swimmers who complete all IMX will receive an IMX score. Swimmers who do not complete all required events will receive a score of zero.

Scoring for the various age groups will be based on the following points systems: 10-and-under Hytek Age Group Points; 11-14 Hytek Single Age Points; and 15-and-over Hytek Open Points.

IMR, 10-and-under events, 100 individual medley, 100 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.

IMX: 10-and-under events, 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly.

IMX: 11-12, 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly.

FHSAA Waives Minimum Meet Requirement For Fall Sports

By Sharon Robb
GAINESVILLE, September 29, 2021–High school coaches scrambling to reschedule meets because of weather cancellations and COVID protocols, can breathe a sign of relief.

The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted 11-2 earlier this week to waive minimum game and meet requirements for teams and individuals in fall sports including swimming and diving for participation in the State Series for all 2021-22 fall sports.

Football had an eight-game minimum for playoff qualification until the association waived its game requirements for all sports in the 2020-21 school year due to COVID and its impact on scheduling.

The FHSAA also typically enforces individual regular season participation minimums. For instance, cross country and swimming and diving athletes had to compete in five meets before Monday’s vote. Golf, bowling and girls volleyball had requirements of six, seven and 10 events, respectively.

Justin Harrison, a top administrator for the Florida High School Athletic Association, said he and other staffers met with county athletic directors to discuss the matter before bringing the proposal to the board for approval. Harrison gave credit to member schools for their efforts in rescheduling and playing make-up contests when necessary.

“We do believe this is our best option for the fall sports,” Harrison said.

He added that staffers will continue to monitor COVID conditions across the state before making a recommendation for the winter sports season. Play begins in November for basketball, soccer, wrestling and girls weightlifting and the game requirements remain in play for those sports as it stands. The board is scheduled to meet again, Nov. 14-15.

The decision was made at the first regularly scheduled FHSAA meeting of the 2021-22 school year.

The Board also approved the recommendation to accept Grace Leadership (Miami Gardens) as first-time members to be admitted into the application period of membership of the FHSAA for the 2021-22 school year.

The proposal to adjust the 2021-22 tournament structure for Flag Football, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Boys Volleyball, and Boys and Girls Water Polo was collectively endorsed. All teams in each district will be permitted to participate in the district tournament while each District Champion and the next four highest ranked teams will advance to the regional tournament.

The district and regional tournaments will be seeded based on the rankings of the participating schools, where the highest ranked team will host each match-up. Furthermore, the Board approved of the changes to the Track & Field regular season dates, moving the first allowable day for practice to January 31, 2022 and the last day for a regular season meet to be April 16, 2022.
