PEMBROKE PINES, March 24, 2018—The battle for the combined team title is going down to the wire at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.
Defending champion and meet host South Florida Aquatic Club leads Metro Aquatics by 8.5 points going into the third and final day of competition at Academic Village Pool.
SOFLO, led by Kathleen Golding and Rafael Rodriguez for the second consecutive day, leads by only 8.5 points. SOFLO has 1,654 points and Metro Aquatics is second with 1,646. East Coast Aquatic Club is third with 1,554.
It is expected to be one of the closest finishes in meet history. SOFLO is attempting to win both Seniors and Junior Olympic titles in the same short course season for the sixth time in the team’s 18-year history.
“The kids swam really well,” said SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson after Saturday’s finals. “We are shaving off a lot of best times in the groups. The Gold Group did a really nice job and senior training group is making consos and finals and scoring points. Sunday should be one of our stronger days with the medley relays.
“The team is really coming together,” Anderson said. “They are doing a good job closing out races and when necessary winning some races. Teams are are definitely gunning for us.
“We need to come together as a team. I told them they have to have a little bit more grit and get a little tougher. They need to get comfortable feeling slightly uncomfortable going fast. It’s going to be a matter of pride. I think it will come down to the men’s and women’s B relays.”
Golding won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 53.90 and was third in the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 26.23. Golding has 137 points.
Golding was also a member of SOFLO’s third place 800-yard freestyle relay that finished in 7:45.61. Other relay members were Paige Lane, Kelley Heron and Katrina Del Vecchio.
Lane was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:53.38 and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.56.
Rodriguez won the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:01.32 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time in 1:42.25. Leonardo Mateus was third in the 400 IM in a best time 4:13.43.
Rodriguez was also a member of SOFLO’s runner-up 800-yard freestyle relay that finished in 7:04.39. Other relay members were Heath Brames, Ricardo Roche and CJ Kopecki.
Lance Lesage was second in the 15-16 50-yard backstroke in a best time 25.00 and has 65 points in high point. Ricardo Roche was fourth in a best time 24.88 in the open division. Roche has 84 points.
