St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Region 4-3A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Colmenares Double Winner, Garrick Breaks School Record

MIAMI, November 5, 2021–For the second consecutive week, St. Thomas Aquinas swept team titles at the Region 4-3A Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at Miami Belen’s Gian Zumpano Aquatics Center.

The defending girls champion won with 457 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was runner-up with 244 points.

In an exciting finish, the St. Thomas boys’ team, fifth last year, knocked off defending champion Miami Belen by one point. The Raiders captured the title with 315 points and Belen Jesuit finished with 314 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was fourth with 189 points.

The boys crown came down to an exciting 400-yard freestyle relay with the young Raiders foursome winning in 3:18.70 with freshman Gabriel Tortola, sophomore Matthew Tan, senior Jack Faulkner and freshman Alex Mansur, 12/100ths ahead of Belen in 3:18.82 with senior John Fanjul, junior Ernesto Cabrera, junior Jose Morales and senior Nelson de Leon.

In addition to the Raiders’ relay win and runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, there were individual winners Alex Mansur in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.83, Gabriel Tortola in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.15 and Jack Faulkner in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.63.

St. Thomas Aquinas girls team swept all three relays. Diver Kaitlyn Ross won the 1-meter event with 440.55 points. Julianne McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.17 and was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.25.

Pembroke Pines Charter had two individual champions with Kaitlyn Jorgensen in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.25 and Victoria Torres in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.71.

The only other Broward girls winner was Syven Walker of Archbishop McCarthy in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.13.

Everglades’ Javier Colmenares was South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finisher as a double winner. He won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 1:57.20 and 100-yard breaststroke in 58.30, another best time. He was also a member of the third place 200-yard medley relay and fifth place 400-yard freestyle relay with SOFLO teammate Alejandro Mateus.

SOFLO teammate Nathaniel Garrick of Archbishop McCarthy broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke in the 55.65 to finish third. The previous record was 56.58 set in 2013.

Archbishop McCarthy Girls, Belen Jesuit Boys Win Belen Jesuit Invitational; SOFLO’s Izzy Wilson, Nathaniel Garrick Win

MIAMI, October 18, 2021–Archbishop McCarthy, led by double winner Syven Walker, won the girls’ team title Friday in the Miami Belen Jesuit Invitational.

Archbishop McCarthy won with 153 points. Carrollton was runner-up with 109 points.

Walker won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.62 and 100-yard freestyle in 56.44.

Johanni Rodriguez-Cedeno was the only other individual winner for the girls team in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.52.

Host Miami Belen Jesuit won the boys’ team title with 197 points, more than 100 points ahead of runnerup Doral Prep.

South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers Izzy Wilson of Carrollton and Nathaniel Garrick of Archbishop McCarthy won events.

Garrick, a junior, was a double winner in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.16 and 100-yard backstroke in 58.49. Garrick was the only winner from Archbishop McCarthy.

Wilson won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.38.

Archbishop McCarthy Sweeps David Posnack JCC; SOFLO’s Nathaniel Garrick Double Winner

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 6, 2021–Archbishop McCarthy picked up two impressive wins by sweeping David Posnack JCC in a Tuesday dual meet.

The Mavericks girls and boys teams won 21 of 22 events, including all six relays.

The girls team was led by double winners Syven Walker, Johanni Rodriguez-Cedeno and Makaila Blanchard.

Walker won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.93 and 100-yard freestyle in 58.77.

Blanchard won the 50-yard freestyle in 28.28, tying teammate Johanni Rodriguez-Cedeno. She also won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:17.39. Rodriguez-Cedeno also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:26.97.

The boys team was led by double winners Nathaniel Garrick and Pedro Medina.

Garrick won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.51 and 100-yard freestyle in 56.58. He was a member of two winning relays, leading off the 200-yard medley relay and anchoring the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Medina won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.18 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:13.82.

American Heritage Plantation Sweeps Archbishop McCarthy, American Heritage Delray Beach

PLANTATION, September 29, 2021–American Heritage Plantation won its home tri-meet against Archbishop McCarthy and American Heritage Delray Beach on Wednesday at the Patriots’ pool.

It was the Patriots’ third meet of the season.

American Heritage Plantation girls edged Archbishop McCarthy, 79-72, and defeated sister school American Heritage Delray Beach, 90-47. In the other match, Archbishop McCarthy defeated American Heritage Delray Beach, 102.50-44.50.

In the boys’ competition, American Heritage Plantation defeated Archbishop McCarthy, 88-71, and American Heritage Delray Beach, 99-39. In the other match, Archbishop McCarthy topped American Heritage Delray Beach, 111-38.

The girls’ team swept all three relays including the meet-clinching 400-yard freestyle in 4:10.48 with Mila Bond, Amari Porter, Audrey Prado and Eva Pierre-Antoine.

The Patriots also had three individual winners: Eva Pierre-Antoine in the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.06), Amari Porter in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.45) and Audrey Prado in the 500-yard freestyle (5:47.84).

Syven Walker of Archbishop McCarthy was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle (25.86) and 100-yard freestyle (57.36).

Ainsley Lappas-Ford of American Heritage Delray Beach was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley (2:27.35) and 100-yard backstroke (1:07.61).

In the boys’ competition, American Heritage Plantation swept all three relays.

Alessandro Pereira and Rithvik Marri were double winners for the Patriots. Pereira won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.06 and 100-yard butterfly in 57.06. Marri won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.24 and 400-yard freestyle in 5:04.53.

Nathaniel Garrick of Archbishop McCarthy won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.25 and was second in the 50-yard freestyle.

American Heritage Plantation’s next meet is Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Pine Crest at 4:30 p.m.

Archbishop McCarthy Girls Tie For First, Boys Take Third At Florida Catholic Invitational

ORLANDO, September 18, 2021–Archbishop McCarthy girls team tied for first place and boys team was third Saturday at the 30th Florida Catholic Invitational at Lake Highland Aquatic Center.

The girls tied Bishop Kenny for the team title with 352 points. Cardinal Gibbons girls were fourth with 320. The Mavericks boys team was third with 231 points behind winner Bishop Kenny with 532 and Bishop Verot with 375 points. Cardinal Gibbons boys were fourth.

The Mavericks top girls finisher was Syven Walker, second in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.45 and second in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.89. Walker, 17, picked up 34 points.

Walker anchored the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay that finished in 3:53.45 with teammates Makaila Blancahrd, Tamalia Blanchard and Savannah Korb.

Archbishop McCarthy was third in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:46.37 with Johanni Rodriguez-Cedeno, Tamalia Blanchard, Makaila Blanchard and Walker.

SOFLO’s Calista Harries was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:18.19.

Cardinal Gibbons top finisher was Jaclyn Nelson, winner of the 100-yard backstrokle in 1:01.36. She was also third in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.64.

Other top Chiefs finishers were: Kaitlyn Armbruster, second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:24.61 and third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.49; Melody Yates, third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.10 and Addison Byrne, fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.98.

Cardinal Gibbons also finished second in the girls’ 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Marcus Szarbo of Cardinal Gibbons won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.74 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.22.

John Lynch of Cardinal Gibbons won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.91 and was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.98.

SOFLO’s Nathaniel Garrick was Archbishop McCarthy’s top boys’ finisher placing second in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.95. Teammate Dennis Dale was fourth in the event in 1:05.36. Garrick was also sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.60. Garrick, 16, earned 30 points for his teamm

Eleven teams from around the state compete. 2019 girls and boys champion St. Thomas Aquinas did not compete.
