Sarasota Riverview Girls, Sarasota Boys Repeat As State 4A Champions; Diver James Boardman Lone Broward State Champion

STUART, November 5, 2022–Sarasota Riverview and Sarasota High defended their team titles at the FHSAA State 4A Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

Riverview won its second girls’ team title since 2013 with 387. Oviedo was runner-up with 232. Cypress Bay was the top Broward girls team placing fifth with 114 points.

Sarasota won its third consecutive title with 265 points. Two years ago Sarasota won the 3A title but since has been bumped up to 4A. Fort Lauderdale was the top boys finisher placing 15th with 48 points.

Fort Lauderdale sophomore James Boardman captured the boys’ 1-meter diving title with 494.70 points ahead of runnerup Jack Sparks with 487.30 to earn Broward County’s only state champion title.

Taravella’s Mason Green was third in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.90.

Cypress Bay’s top event was the girls 200-yard medley relay where the Lightning finished third in 1:48.00 with Nicole Bellardi, Ana Villamil, Gabriella DeLuna and Mariana Cote. Villamil was also seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.13.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s 4A qualifiers were: Carley Kaplan of West Broward, Gabriella DeLuna and Ana Villamil of Cypress Bay, Hashan Ekanayake of Western and Ivan Grass of Miami Palmetto.

Cypress Bay Girls, Braddock Boys Win Region 4-4A Team Titles; Flying Ls Divers Cavaretta, Boardman Win; Villamil, Kaplan, DeLuna Top SOFLO Finishers

BOCA RATON—Cypress Bay girls and Holmes Braddock boys won the team titles at the Region 4-4A Swimming and Diving Championships at Boca Raton Aquatic Center.

Cypress Bay, buoyed by three relay wins and double winner Mariana Cote, won the girls crown with 404.5 points. Fort Lauderdale was runner-up with 246.

Holmes Braddock, led by three relay wins and five individual wins including double winners George Gonzalez and Marcelo Mansur, captured the boys team title with 330 points followed by Miami Beach with 245 and Fort Lauderdale was third with 208.

For the second week in a row, Fort Lauderdale divers Sophia Cavaretta and James Boardman won the 1-meter springboard titles after winning last wek’s district titles.

Cavaretta, a freshman, won the girls title with 461.50 points for her second major title. The Flying Ls swept the top four girls spots. Boardman, a sophomore, won the boys title with 530.05.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Ana Villamil, Carley Kaplan and Gabriella DeLuna were South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finishers.

Villamil of Cypress Bay was a member of two winning relays, the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.53) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.77). She was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.93.

DeLuna was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay. She was also third in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.09.

Kaplan of West Broward was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.74.

Fort Lauderdale’s Tawannah McLemore was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.50, an All-American consideration time, and 100-yard freestyle in 52.41.

Cote was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.54 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.81.

The only Broward boys winners were Fort Lauderdale’s Makar Goncharov in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.70 and Mason Green of Taravella in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.23.

The FHSAA State 4A meet is Saturday, Nov. 5 at Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart. The state qualifiers and psych sheet will be posted at fhsaa.org after the completion of all region meets around the state.

Cypress Bay Defends Girls’ Title, Cooper City Boys Finish Runnerup At District 11-4A Swimming And Diving Championships; SOFLO’s Kaplan, Villamil Win

MIAMI, October 19, 2022—Cypress Bay defended its’ girls title at the District 11-4A Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday at Miami-Dade North Aquatic Center.

The Lightning, buoyed by five individual and two relay wins, won the girls’ title with 565 points, bettering last year’s total of 532.

Cypress Bay was led by SOFLO’s Ana Villamil, who won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.58, was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.49. She also anchored the winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:44.71 with teammates Gabriella DeLuna, also of SOFLO, Nicol Bellardi and Mariana Cote.

Other individual event Cypress Bay winners were:

Nicol Bellardi defending her title in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.10.

Mariana Cote was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.63 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.22.

Samira Zambrano won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.96.

SOFLO’s Carley Kaplan of West Broward won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.08 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.57. Kaplan led off the second place 200 freestyle relay along with teammates Anjana Andapally, Kayla Diaz and Gabriela Avila. Andapally and Avila are also SOFLO swimmers.

SOFLO’s Amelie Bicerne, also of Cypress Bay, was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.71. SOFLO teammate Tania Mantilla of Cypress Bay was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.12. DeLuna was third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.11.

Cooper City was Broward County’s top boys finisher, placing runnerup to Doral with 348 points. Cypress Bay was third with 305 points.

SOFLO’s Stephen Kim of Cypress Bay was a member of runner-up 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams and second in the 200 IM in 2:05.68.

Cooper City was second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:50.43 with SOFLO swimmers Ethan McPeek, Derek Hau and Chris Hau. Derek Hau was also second in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.72. McPeek and the Hau brothers were third in the 400 free relay.

SOFLO’s Garrett Garcia-Studdard of West Broward was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:25.06 and third in the 100 freestyle in 52.11.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Team Titles; SOFLO’s Javier Colmenares Double Winner At BCAA Swimming And Diving Championships

PLANTATION, October 15, 2022—St. Thomas Aquinas was unstoppable winning the boys and girls team titles at the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The Raider boys, with three individual winners and one relay champion, defended their title with 507 points ahead of Pompano Beach with 315 and Fort Lauderdale with 298.

St. Thomas girls reclaimed the title after finishing second last year. The Raiders won with 508 points and won the combined team title with 1,015 points, the only team to score more than 1,000 points.

Defending girls champion Cypress Bay was second with 451 and second in combined (677) and Fort Lauderdale was third with 333. Cypress Bay had won three team titles in four years. Since 2013, Cypress Bay has finished first or second.

But the night belonged to the Raiders with double winner Julianne McCranie and wins in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.80 and 100-yard backstroke in 57.73, defending both her titles.

McCranie led off the winning 200-yard medley relay that won in 1:49.01 with teammates Mariann Catalasan, Teresa Landron and Jade Renaud. She anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with Landron, Mia Gelin and Ana Lutz.

The Raider boys were led by individual winners Samuel Collingwood in the 50-yard freestle in 21.87; Alex Mansur in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.53 and Gabriel Tortola in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.06. The Raiders won the 400-yard freestyle in 3:16.25 with Collingwood, Matthew Tan, Tortola and Mansur.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Javier Colmenares of Everglades mirrored last year’s performance winning the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.29 and 100-yard breaststroke in 57.96, defending both his BCAA titles with faster times. Like last year, Colmenares was the fastest qualifier in morning prelims.

Cypress Bay’s Mariana Cote was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.00 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.07.

Lightning teammates Nicole Bellardi won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.37 and Ana Villamil won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.41. Cypress Bay won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.70 with Bellardi, Daniela Ortiz, Samira Zambrano and Cote.

Sophomore Tawannah McLemore of Fort Lauderdale defended her titles in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.99 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.04.

Mason Green of Taravella was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.67 and 100-yard butterfly in 50.01, defending his butterfly title. Green was also a member of the Trojans’ 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:29.64 with teammates Mekhi Dawkins, RJ Martin and Miles Green.

Fort Lauderdale won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.40 with Jason Cuffe, Makar Goncharov, Connor Carey and Keith Rogers.

Jackson Wampler of South Broward had one of the biggest wins of the night capturing the 100-yard backstroke in 54.60 knocking off Marcus Szabo of Cardinal Gibbons in 54.85.

St. Thomas Aquinas senior Katlyn Raby, runner-up last year, won the girls’ 1-meter diving title with 281.30 points. Raby has committed to Notre Dame.

Fort Lauderdale sophomore James Boardman defended his title winning the boys’ 1-meter diving title with 279.35 points. Last year he won with 266.75.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Cypress Bay In BCAA Season-Opener; SOFLO’s Ana Villamil, Stephen Kim Double Winners

PLANTATION, August 31, 2022—St. Thomas Aquinas girls and boys teams won their BCAA season-opener Tuesday night at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The Raiders swept the Cypress Bay Lightning. The boys won, 117-53 and the girls squeaked by, 89-87.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Ana Villamil was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.91) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.50).

The Raiders had three other girls double winners.

Mariana Cote won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.02 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:22.28.

Ana Lutz won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.32 and 100-yard freestyle in 56.01.

Julianne McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.22 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.35.

Cypress Bay won the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

SOFLO’s Stephen Kim, 16, of Cypress Bay, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.51 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.94.

The Raider won two boys relays in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay and had two other double winners.

Alex Mansur won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.13 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.81.

Gabriel Tortola won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.44 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:02.38.

Cypress Bay Girls, Doral Academy Boys Win District 11-4A Titles; SOFLO’s Alex Golding, Juan Mora Double Winners

HOLLYWOOD, October 26, 2021—Defending girls champion Cypress Bay and Doral Academy boys won the District 11-4A Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday at South Broward Aquatic Center.

Cypress Bay, led by three relay wins and individual event winners Mariana Cote and Nicol Bellardi, dominated the nine-team girls field to win with 532 points. Doral Academy was a distant second with 292 and Cooper City, led by individual event winners diver Cara Barkey and Kate Kaplan, was third with 260.

Cote won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.74 and Bellardi won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.01.

Doral Academy, led by South Florida Aquatic Club’s Juan Mora, won the boys team title with 464 points.

Cooper City, led by SOFLO’s Alex Golding and diver Nicholas Dolton, was runner-up with 416 points. Defending boys champion Cypress Bay was third with 307.

Mora won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.72 and 100-yard breaststroke in 56.68. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay wins.

Golding won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.41 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:00.87. He was also a member of the third place 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays along with SOFLO teammates Chris Hau, Derek Hau and Javier Roman.

Roman was also second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.10.

SOFLO’s Gabriella DeLuna of Cypress Bay was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.48.

SOFLO’s Sally Golding of Cooper City was third in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.65.

West Broward’s Dahlia Hirsh was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.86.

Cypress Bay Girls, St. Thomas Boys Win Team Titles At BCAA Championships; SOFLO’s Javier Colmenares Double Winner; Next Up Districts

PLANTATION, October 17, 2021—Cypress Bay girls and St. Thomas Aquinas boys won the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

After last year’s meet was cancelled because of the pandemic, Cypress Bay, coached by John Spire, took up where it left off in 2019, winning its third team title in four years. Since 2013, Cypress Bay has finished first or second at the BCAA meet.

Cypress Bay won with 531 points, ahead of defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas with 446. Fort Lauderdale edged Pembroke Pines Charter for third place, 251-250.5.

St. Thomas Aquinas captured the boys team title with 371 points. Fort Lauderdale was runner-up with 328 and Pompano Beach was third with 319 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas edged Cypress Bay for the combined team title, 817-813.5 points.

Cypress Bay won the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and finished second behind Western in the 200-yard medley relay.

Mariana Cote of Cypress Bay was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:54.14, dropping 4.03 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.51. Nicol Bellardi was the only other girls individual winner for the Lightning in the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:07.20, dropping 1.55.

Freshman Tawannah McLemore of Fort Lauderdale and Julianne McCranie of St. Thomas Aquinas were also double winners.

McLemore won the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 24.11, dropping 0.73, and 100-yard freestyle in 52.43, also a best time dropping 3.25.

McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.51 and 100-yard backstroke in 58.14.

The only other BCAA champion was Victoria Torres of Pembroke Pines Charter in the 100-yard breaststroke in a best time 1:05.63, dropping 1.08.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Javier Colmenares of Everglades was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 1:55.65, dropping 1.02 and 100-yard breaststroke in 58.10. He had the fastest qualifying times in prelims.

There were two other boys’ double winners.

Joshua Cajuste of Pompano Beach won the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 21.41, dropping 0.79 and 100-yard freestyle in 46.79, also a best time dropping 2.09.

Fort Lauderdale High senior Dylan Felt, who trains with Swim Fort Lauderdale, was also a double winner in individual events. He won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.20 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:32.52.

Felt also anchored the Flying Ls thrilling 400-yard freestyle relay win in 3:19.01 with teammates Andrew Brantmeyer, Jason Cuffe and Dominick Mitchell, just ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas in 3:19.07.

The only other individual champions were Mason Green of Taravella in the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 50.96, dropping 1.30 and Landon Kyser of Cypress Bay in the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 51.72, dropping 2.72.

Fort Lauderdale swept the 1-meter diving titles. Catherine Kilroy won the girls title with 244.50 points, edging Kaitlyn Ross of St. Thomas Aquinas with 241.60.

Cypress Bay Girls, Cooper City Boys Win BCAA Meet

COOPER CITY, September 30, 2021–Cypress Bay and Cooper City split their BCAA meet Wednesday at the Cowboys’ home pool.

Cypress Bay girls defeated Cooper City, 98-74 and Western, 114-50. In the other matchup, Cooper City topped Western 116-55.

In the boys’ matchups, Cooper City knocked off Cypress Bay, 91-75, and Western, 109-59. In the other matchup, Cypress Bay defeated Western, 90-72.

Cypress Bay came up big sweeping all three girls relays. Natalia Ortiz, Gabriella DeLuna, Samira Zambrano and Ana Villamil were individual event winners for the Lightning.

Mallory Schleicher was a double winner for Cooper City in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.59) and 100-yard freestyle (53.97) and Sally Golding won two events in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.53) and 100-yard backstroke (1:02.34).

Cooper City boys were led by individual winner Nicholas Dolton in diving, Alex Golding in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard medley relay.

Derek Hau was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle (23.75) and 100-yard freestyle (52.40).

Cypress Bay won the boys’ 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Wisthon Rendon was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.46) and 500-yard freestyle (4:57.00). Landon Kyser also won two events in the 100-yard butterfly (52.62) and 100-yard backstroke (54.37).

Cypress Bay Lightning Sweeps Coral Glades, Douglas In BCAA Tri-Meet

CORAL SPRINGS, September 23, 2021—Cypress Bay picked up two more wins in the Broward County Athletic Association with victories over Coral Glades and Douglas at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The girls defeated Douglas, 107-61, and Coral Glades, 109-44.

The boys edged Douglas, 84-78, and Coral Glades, 96-67.

Please note: Coral Glades and Douglas scores were not reported by host Coral Glades High School.

Cypress Bay’s Wednesday meet against Stranahan and Taravella was rescheduled for Oct. 13. Cypress Bay’s next meet is Wednesday, Sept.29 against Western and host Cooper City at 4:30 p.m.
