SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher Captures Overall Title At Swim Fort Lauderdale Beach

By Sharon Robb

FORT LAUDERDALE, January 22, 2018—In less than ideal race conditions, Mallory Schleicher of South Florida Aquatic Club won the overall title Sunday in the Swim Fort Lauderdale Beach Open Water Mile Swim.

Schleicher, 14, of Cooper City won the overall, women’s and 13-14 age group titles in 22 minutes and 36.3.

The rising young star in open water swimming outsprinted Wellington’s Ashley Cozad, a 16-year-old, in 22:41.

One of the youngest swimmers in the field of 162 swimmers, Schleicher was first among 57 women and also won her age group that featured 10 swimmers including two who were unable to finish.

Schleicher was able to master extremely rough seas and strong current including an undertow that got the best of many good swimmers who were unable to finish despite wearing wet suits. There were wind gusts of 15 to 20-mile per hour, 5-foot waves and 73-degree weather.

SOFLO age group coach George Mersinger, 64, of Miramar was 88th overall, 59th among men and seventh in his age group in 38:26.

SOFLO masters swimmer Gina Grant, 20, of Pembroke Pines won the women’s division in the Special Olympics 1-Mile in 40:07 that would have placed her 98th out of 141 women swimmers.

By Sharon Robb

September 4, 2017—-South Florida Aquatic Club was well-represented at the Sept. 2 Pompano Beach Piranhas Open Water Extreme Race that featured 5K, one mile, 500-meter and 100-meter swims off Pompano Beach.

SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher continued her winning ways by placing first in the women’s 5-mile 14-and-under category and second overall with a time of 1:21:47.483.

The race was swum in one direction and the entire 5K was against the current. That is part of the challenge of open water racing and what makes it interesting, according to SOFLO coach George Mersinger.

In the 1-mile race, SOFLO swimmers Lucas Porven and his sister Giada both made their open water debut and had amazing results.

Lucas Porven placed fourth among 11-year- olds and 15th in the 14-and-under age group with a time of 24:06.023.

Ryan Capote of South Florida Aquatic Club won his age group and was second overall among men’s finishers Saturday at Swim Miami 2014 presented by Nike.

Capote, 16, won his age group (15-16) and was second overall in the mile event in 21 minutes and 31 seconds. Only U.S. national open water team member Joey Pedraza was ahead of Capote winning in 20:17.

SOFLO’s Juan Osorio, 13, was second in the 13-14 age group and was eighth overall in 22:47.

Both Mateus and Osorio had great time drops. Last year Mateus won the 11-12 age group title in 28:26 and Osorio was second in 29:51.

SOFLO age group coach George Mersinger, 61, was fourth in his age group (60-64) in 35:58 and was 125th among men’s finishers and 238th overall.

Pedraza of Azura Florida Aquatics and Power Bar Team Elite pulled off a hat trick by sweeping the men’s titles in the 800-meter, 1,500-meter and 10,000-meter races.

Pedraza, 26, won the 10K win in 1:54:02, the mile in 20:17 and 800 meters in 7:59. He was the only swimmer under two hours in the 10K.

Florencia Melo, 24, of Miami won the women’s 10K title in 2:10.26 ahead of Rose Smiddy, 15, of Aqua Kids Sharks in 2:17:56.

Gaia Fella, 14, of Miami won the women’s 800-meter race ub 10:41.

More than 1,000 swimmers competed in the various races off the Miami Yacht Club on Watson Island.

The course was patterned after the 2012 London Olympics open water course. Conditions may be rough because of predicted bad weather.

Race proceeds benefitted the H2Os Foundation (Helping Others Swim).

SOFLO Swimmers Will Compete Saturday In Swim Miami 2014

Ryan Capote, Leonardo Mateus and Juan Osorio of South Florida Aquatic Club will compete in the Swim Miami 2014 presented by Nike.

The open water event begins Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Miami Yacht Club on Watson Island.

The first event start is the 800-meter races at 8 a.m. followed by the 10K start at 8:15 a.m., 5K at 10 a.m., and Miami Mile at 10:15 a.m.

The awards ceremonies will be held simultaneously as the events finish.

Last year Mateus won the 11-12 age group title in 28:26 and Osorio was second in 29:51. Mateus was also 11th overall in the entire men’s field.

The trio will be joined by SOFLO age group coach George Mersinger, who will also swim the mile.

The course is patterned after the 2012 London Olympics open water course. Conditions may be rough because of predicted bad weather for the morning.

SOFLO will be joined by other Florida Gold Coast teams Aqua Kids Sharks, Azura Florida Aquatics, Flying Fish, Gulliver, Lake Lytal Lightning, Miami-Dade, St. Andrew’s, Titan Aquatics and Wahoos of Wellington.

Race proceeds benefit the H2Os Foundation (Helping Others Swim).
