Florida Gold Coast swimmers flexed their muscles on the national stage Wednesday on Day One of the USA Swimming Speedo Junior National Championships at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex in Irvine, California.

Duke University-bound Isabella Paez, 18, of Metro Aquatics finished third in the 200-meter butterfly in a lifetime-best 2:11.94, a 1.71-second drop from her previous best of 2:13.65.

Melissa Marinheiro, 17, of South Florida Aquatic Club also swam a lifetime-best in the 800-meter freestyle in 8:56.42, dropping 1.47 seconds to finish 36th. Her previous best was 8:57.89.

SOFLO teammate Kathleen Golding will swim the 400-meter individual medley on Thursday. Her best time is 4:57.67. Golding is seeded 45th.

Marinheiro has three events remaining the rest of the week. She will swim the 400-meter freestyle (4:20.69), 200-meter freestyle bonus (2:05.69) and 1500-meter freestyle (17:04.87).

In other championship finals:

Girls 800-meter freestyle: Maryland swimmer Sierra Schmidt, 16, swimming unattached, won in a best time 8:34.58, dropping 4.70 from her previous best.

Girls 200-meter butterfly: Easop Lee, 14, of North Baltimore Aquatic Club won in a best time 2:10.40. She led at the midway mark with a 1:02.22 split. Her winning time was the third fastest all-time for 13-14 age group

Boys 200-meter butterfly: In front of his hometown crowd, Corey Okubo, 18, of Aquazot came from behind in the last 50-meters to win in a best time 1:58.30, seventh all-time fastest in the 15-16 age group.

Girls 100-meter breaststroke: Lauren Barber, 17, of the Jewish Community Center won in a best time 1:09.72.

Boys 100-meter breaststroke: Connor Hoppe, 18, of Clovis came from behind to win in 1:02.17, ranking ninth in 17-18 age group. Ge overtook Peter Kropp who has ahead by nearly a body-length. Reece Whitley, 14, of Penn Charter Aquatic Club crushed the 13-14 national age group record by a half second in the “B” final in 1:03.23. Whitley is one of the nation’s top African-American age group swimmers.

Boys 1500-meter freestyle: Sam Magnan of Parkland Aquatic Club won in a best time 15:28.58, shaving 27.98 seconds off his previous best. His time from the afternoon heats held up after the fastest heat was finished.

Thursday’s events are the 200-meter backstroke, 100-meter freestyle, 400-meter individual medley and 4×100-meter freestyle relay.

The meet, both prelims and finals, is being live-streamed at usaswimming.org.

Florida Gold Coast Wins Six Individual Titles On Day Two Of Southern Zone Age Group Championships

July 29, 2014—It was another outstanding day for Florida Gold Coast at the USA Swimming Southern Zone Age Group Championships Wednesday in San Antonio, Texas.

Florida Gold Coast’s Rafael Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club and Andrea Santander of Gulliver Swimming were double winners on Day Two.

Both Rodriguez and Santander now have three south zone age group titles over two days.

Rodriguez, 12, after winning the 400-meter freestyle on opening day in a best time 4:18.36, added two more titles on Wednesday.

Rodriguez won his second title of the meet in the 200-meter freestyle in a best time of 2:03.16, dropping an impressive 3.77 seconds off his previous best of 2:06.93.

Rodriguez also won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:02.19, another best time, dropping 1.16 seconds from his previous best of 1:03.35.

After winning the 11-12 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:30.18, Santander, 12, won the 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:08.16, dropping 1.32 seconds off her previous best.

Santander also won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:04.27, another best time 1:04.27, bettering her previous best of 1:05.26.

Cody Cline, 16, of the Wahoos of Wellington, the top seed after morning prelims, won his first title in the 200-meter freestyle in a best time 1:54.97, dropping 1.51 seconds bettering his previous best of 1:56.48.

Luke Smutny, 16, of AquaKids Sharks won the 100-meter butterfly in a best time 57.26, dropping 2.63 seconds from his previous best time of 59.89.

Florida Swimming and Florida Gold Coast dominated the 15-18 200-meter freestyle with five swimmers in the top eight. Lindsey Trematerra, 17, of Florida Swimming was the top finisher placing second in 2:04.19, dropping 1.54 from her previous best of 2:05.73.

Florida Swimming had three qualifiers in the top eight of the boys 13-14 200-meter freestyle.

Georgia leads the combined, boys and girls team totals after two days of competition.

Florida Swimming is runner-up in the combined and boys team standings and third in the girls race.

Florida Gold Coast, having its best showing in years, is fifth overall, third among the boys and fifth among the girls teams.

The Zone Championships feature top regional swimmers at the age group level. The meet continues through Saturday.

July 30, 2014—Esteban Diaz-Velasco of South Florida Aquatic Club was the top Florida Gold Coast finisher at the USA Swimming Southern Zone Senior Long Course Championships Wednesday night at Florida Gulf Coast Aquatic Center in Fort Myers.

Diaz-Velasco, 15, was ninth in the 200-meter backstroke in a lifetime-best 2:12.41, dropping 5.73 seconds off his previous best. He bettered his best time of 2:18.14 in prelims in 2:13.34 and lowered it again in finals.

SOFLO teammate and Florida Gulf Coast sophomore Marcella Marinheiro, was 12th in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:28.42, also a best time, dropping 1.36 seconds. Her previous best was 2:28.91. She first lowered it in prelims in 2:27.55.

Marinheiro also swam 1:02.03 in the 100-meter freestyle.

Jordan Colon, 17, of SOFLO was 22nd in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:37.93. He was also 24th in the 50-meter breaststroke in 34.07 after going 33.28 in prelims, just .09 off his best time. Colon was coming off a training camp in Corby, England with the Jamaican national team.

SOFLO’s Matthew Gonzalez, 19, swam 2:15.40 in the 200-meter butterfly.
